at least bird seems not injury prone.

he is also born in december. which means when he made rep squads (u19 aus) he was a year younger than many.

at 26yo, he is starting at about the same age as mcgrath, and bowls a simmilar line and length.

give him a shot. hes proven durable, has the shield stats, is mature in body, tall, and we need someone that wont break down!

For the trivia buffs...

Jackson Bird finishes 2012 with the best bowling average of any Test cricketer in 2012 :thumbsu:

it would have been great if matthew wade had have picked up a wicket.

pretty cool for bird though. usually there is someone who jags 1/8 or 2/23 or something like that... although 4/61 probably gets an * next to it :p

great year siddle. 41 at 23.09. can't fault that. next year will be his, like many others, big test though.

Impressed with Bird, i think he could be just what we need for the Ashes. Swings the ball, has a good balanced and non strenuous run-up, bowls a consistant line like Magrath or Clarke and has a controlled temprement. He looks like taking a wicket with the new ball everytime.
IMO he should retain his spot permanently.

Couldnt agree more. Really liked the way he looked. No fuss, just reliable test bowling.

Must keep his spot.

Well I was off the mark in regards to Bird. Thought he was a bit slow for test level but he can hit 140's and has great control. A bit Stuart Clark like IMO.

He's faster than Stuart Clark; aside from that, I agree.

Obviously he is well known and has succeeded in domestic cricket, but in terms of the test side I can see him becoming a total revelation in England. Already looking like he will be of great importance. At the moment I see our bowling lineup for the ashes, particularly in England as Pattinson, Siddle, Bird and Lyon.

He won't play in England until the 3rd test, when we realise just how poorly Johnson is bowling.

Every time he bowls I get more excited, but I've been let down by the selectors before, and if he doesn't perform in India (which is tough to do for any young quick) he may not play the first ashes test.

Will he even play in India? You'd think we'd go with two spinners, Siddle is the obvious first choice but will Bird be second choice? Might get 'rotated' in at some stage I guess.

I'm really just trying to convince myself the selectors won't **** up.

2 spinners? We barely have 1 that is test standard, we don't have TWO! Quicks get wickets in India with good line and control, no issue with 3 quicks and Clarke/Warner acting as the 2nd tweaker.

I've got no idea at the moment, but hopefully it'll be him, Siddle and Stac for India, with Pattinson coming in for Starc in the ashes.

Not sure I agree. Lyon in my opinion will be a success over there, but I agree we mightn't have a second one who will do well.

Ah well, here's hoping we play 3 quicks and Lyon starts the first ashes test.

We will 'take' a 2nd spinner (who knows, Zampa, Beer, Boyce, Holland- if fit, Boyce) but playing them you would be dead set gambling on them as 2 are not ready (Boyce/Zampa) one is ordinary (Holland) and one is average (Beer). I am struggling to think of a 2nd spinner that would get 3+ wickets a test...I'd rather play a quick instead (prefeably one that knows how to reverse swing the ball)

If they are fit Siddle and Pattinson are auto picks.

We are just looking for the third wheel.

With Siddle bowling 1st change, that means we need a new ball bowler to partner Patto. That is the advantage that Bird has over the others.

Bird is certainly looking more dangerous than Hilfenhaus was, and the two left armers are a risk to throw the new ball to.

People were complaining about picking the 4 quicks and Lyon for Sydney, if they went the other way it's likely Bird would have been the one they left out. This way we have seen some more of Bird, and he has made himself a legitimate option for the future.

Let's hope India doesn't break him if he stays in the side for the series over there.

Ummmm... O'Keefe?

Im not so sure Siddle will be ahead of Bird come the Ashes. He's a workhorse Siddle but Bird is already showing more with the little time he's had with the ball. We've all been yearning for the next Warne but with Bird we're closer to the next McGrath than we've been since he retired.

I'd still like to see both in the side though. WIth the consisntency of those two, Patto will have less pressure on him and he can unleash his aggro on the English and show the world how talented he really is.

Starc/MJ are ****ing weapons (particularly in England) but in an ideal world neither are higher than a 4th quick, too inconsistent to lead the attack for Tests.
