Without getting ahead of myself - what are your thoughts on this guy?

He is now the greatest ever wicket taker in the Sheffield Shield for a debut season. Leading wicket taker in this years competition.

I know he has bowled on the Hobart green top a couple of times, however the wicket hasn't been as green every game.

28 of his wickets this year have come in Tasmania, while the rest have been interstate. So for those who want to say that he has been bowling on a green top, he would still have 20 wickets from 3 games interstate. A couple of these games ended in draws - so far from green tops.

Just thought I would see what you guys had to say about him!

Personally, I think he still has to have a big year next year, however if he starts strongly, i could soon see him overtake Starc.

He could spell the end for Copeland, similar crazy stats, height, economical but has that extra yard of pace.

he's a pretty handy bowler. pace might be his query at taking to the next level, but all you can do is keep taking wickets and try and force the selectors hand, the way copeland did.

he could be a tricky customer in england too so could very well come into consideration for the 2013 ashes tour. he certainly will if he has another year like this one.

it'll be good to get a chance to see him bowl in a first class match on foxtel next week.

That season, as a whole, was a real record breaking season. Bevan broke the runs record and Jaques and Thornely scored above 1000 runs so I'm pretty sure that was a first, 3 people scoring 1000 in a season, and then Haddin scored the most runs by a keeper in a season. massive contrast between the averages/totals that season and this season. And then of course there was that final.

anyway i think bird's - from what I've seen - more likely to make it at international compared to say Faulkner and Butterworth - taking advantage of good bowling conditions - or Cutting and Herrick - taking advantage of poor batsmen not really being able to handle their pace - but there's obviously something about him that made the states think he wasn't up to it. NSW overlooked him for 6 years after being at the U19 WC, and the other states didn't touch him until the last off season either. Of course he may have conquered whatever they thought was wrong with him, but yeah like most players I favour a couple more seasons and then see approach

I understand that people doubt because he didn't get a contract in NSW, but he did play second 11 up there.

But he really just didn't get an opportunity due to their bowling stocks. The amount of fast bowlers in NSW when fully fit over the last couple of years was just crazy!

I can see why someone who had potential couldn't get a gig based on these names.

I am sure that i am also forgetting some as well. But the simple fact is, it is very easy to be overlooked in NSW as they really do provide alot of good cricketers to this Country.

Considering NSW were playing Coyte by the end of last year in FC games you have to wonder how Bird didn't get a chance? Wasn't contracted sure but still could of played. He seems to bowl in the 130's which isn't express but plenty of good bowlers bowl at a similar speed, live he looks to be a bit quicker. Obviously needs to back it up but the fact he has bagged a heap outside of Tassie is the key sign to me that he could be ready for the next level.

Joel Garner took 55 wickets in 82/83 in his first season for South Australia.

nah the bowlers around are genuinely good. coulter-nile, mcdermott, faulkner, cummins, hazlewood, cutting, pattinson are genuine quality prospects. i also like the look of that behrendorff from WA and he took a few wickets in the last game.

our batting stocks are also pretty poor. lack of discipline and consitency is the biggest problem, and the techniques are generally very erratic. i think the coaching of juniors must have changed, or maybe i just notice it more, but the difference in techniques seems much much more noticeable than 10 years ago. in isolation for some batsmen as individuals, having a unique technique can work, and it often does.... but when many coming in and already in our first class system, have such variations on how to bat, i'm not sure that's a great thing.

but maybe it's always been like that, and i'm bit older and cynical now. but i don't think so. one day cricket has seen batsmen come up with a wide variety of new shots and methods to deal with bowlers, so it would make sense.

That reading comes from the One Day final.

A lot of batsman suggesting he is quicker than pace. Seeing as he doesn't swing it the evidence suggests he's quicker than the speed gun showed that night. Certainly looked quicker than Butterworth and Faulkner when he tore Victoria apart at the MCG earlier this year.

Yeah I would say low 130 too. But Bird's got quite a lot of his wickets through bowled/lbw so to hear that batsmen are being surprised by his speed isn't a shock.

It really depends on how they're getting them. So yeah a bit of both. With Butterworth and Faulkner it's hard to get too up in arm, because those two are damn good at extracting any bit of life they can from the ball/pitch. But with Cutting and Herrick whenever I see them bowl I just don't see anything too special apart from their higher than average pace and they're putting up some pretty amazing stats.

cutting gets a load of bounce. he has an ordinary run up, almost to the point where if you saw him in the local nets you're first impression might be he is a tad "special".... but he has such a nice high action and combine that with 6'3ish and that's a deadly weapon to have. he is also pretty quick. i'm a definate fan of cutting.

Yeah but I've def seen Cutting clean up a few batsmen - batsmen, in the top order - simply because they're not good enough for state level and can't handle Cutting's pace, which really isn't extreme. The batting stocks are def poor which has inflated the 'excellent fast bowling depth' a bit. Then again Chris Swan can't get a game for QLD.

Bird has been exceptional this summer. He will need to do it again next year for him to get a go for Australia IMO. He could be another Copeland type.
