Toast Jackson Nelson

I can see the point of an enforcer like Waters or Hodge who actually have some footy smarts but a young fringe player who has no positive impact on the play shouldn't be trying to trash talk anyone and be concentrating on keeping his career.
I dont know.Has he gone backwards that much? I remember in the corresponding game last year he had the ball and Buddy came charging in from behind with that evil glint in his eye; Nelson saw him out the corner of his eye and casually spun on his left and left Buddy standing. He also showed he has some nice candy and a good left, throw in the niggle and I think he should be persevered with as a midfielder. If your picking his kicking/decision making then you better have a look at YO.

Am i missing something? I haven't watched the replay yet but was at the game on Sunday and I'm surprised at the roasting he's getting.

Wasn't great but I thought Schofield and Lycett were arguably worse. Marsden was marginally better.

Sheppard, sub par as well. Redden terrible.

Suspect he has been instructed to negate the small forward of the opposition, often to the detriment of his own game and stats... Didn't see the small forwards kicking goals for Sydney ....just the bloke wearing 23

Even after watching the replay i still think Nelson was far from our worst.

Take that dropped mark away in the last 5 minutes of the game and i'd say he did a reasonable job on a decent small forward like Papley.

You can add Jetta to that list. Gave Sydney 3 goals and cost us one because of his selfishness.

I am prepared to back Jetts in. He took the game on which is what we have been crying out for him to do. Things didn't work out for him but he was the only one taking the game on for us for large periods. Still far too many wall flowers in our side when the going gets tough.

If that was his role (negating Papley), he did it superbly. Can't recall anything Papley did.

Papley is an annoying little shyt too, so all the more power to J-Nelly.

I didn't see any selfish acts at all. I saw a lot of shit kicks- sometimes you have those days, but what he did with the ball in hand was excellent and prepared to forgive an off day with the boot. He did cost us no doubt but it was execution not choices that was the problem. Your call to drop him in the other thread was one of the more "interesting" calls I've seen this week.

People seem way too quick to write young guys off. People were screaming for Duggan to be dropped not so long ago. Given Nelson was probably in the team for Cole and if Cole is ready, I would swap them, but the only way for young guys to improve (or to know if they can) is to get a fair chunk of games into them. Nelson is still inexperienced and due to injury hasn't had a run of games. Give him time (although that may need to be in the two's for a while).

Let's just say i remember more good things that Nelson did than Duggan. Papley was non existent.

One Is a late pick and fringe 22 player, the other is a high draft pick and supposedly captain in waiting.

Now you tell me who was the more disappointing.

It’s more than people have realised he’s not (currently) a good defender and are questioning what his role is. If we want a small lockdown defender we should draft one. If Nelson is a failed mid who we are trying to convert into a small negating backman, then play him as one in the WAFL and wait til he dominates in that role first.

The bar is not raised very high at West Coast so we will continue to operate with sub standard players.

2016/17: “All I want to see is some effort from Jetta, a few beautiful kicks a game isn’t good enough, drop him!”
2018: “I don’t care about his effort, his kicking was shit, drop him!”

Apparently Jetta has to be the best player in the comp to stay in the side.

totally unreasonable to expect a nine year seasoned veteran to perform consistently at this stage of his career, an outside utility that averages 15 possessions a game. Ok he had a bad game disposal wise on the weekend and was not alone but his footy has not changed in 9 years. I am not sure what you are all waiting for to happen with him, what you see is what you get. A very average AFL footballer who never lived up to his potential.

Thumpa and some other bloke on the WCE website did a video review of the match whi shows footage of the scrap at the end of a quarter. Nelson is right in the thick of it and Papley throws his elbow at him but it misses his jaw. Jacko was definitely under his skin. It's one of those priceless intangibles. If someone got buddy to play the man and not the footy he may have never got a run on like he did

I agree he isn't a great defender ATM (and not sure he should be used as one) and no issues with criticising his performances lately. I just think it can't necessarily be concluded after 30 odd games that he won't come good. Particularly as those games have mostly been stop start and not strung together. Not saying he will make it either just that most players take time and its lucky if they can impact from day 1.

Would have been a bigger fan of the scuffle if we had shown something in the second quarter instead of getting belted.

Nelson does seem to get under blokes skin and that isn't something you can teach. I thought Zak Jones might take a swing at him during the fracas :tearsofjoy:

All of this talk about Nelson doing a job on Papley is laughable.
Papley had 17 possessions.

People trying to make a case for a guy who had 5 possessions and made 4 clangers
and saying he wasn't that bad because he got under people's skin is a sad reflection
of where we are as a club IMO.

He's also played over 30 games so it's not like he's a rookie FFS.

Some moderate smarts.
