I think the thing about Hamling is when he does stick those telescope arms up and takes a grab, he's got a bit of that 'Wow, who is that?' about him. You notice him when he's in the action, whereas, if someone like GHS made the same play, he wouldn't stand out as much.

Hamling is still a rake, but he's a beautiful mover. One to watch down the track, but doubt he'd make his debut in 2013.

I didn't realize he's an indigenous player till last week, no wonder he's got a bit of speed and spring in those long legs.
I couldn't believe it when Wells read his name out first pick......his information on this kid and his judgement on ability was staggering, afterall he was just skin and bone.....but I can see a big transformation of late so I'm starting to like what I see.
Don't see him in future as a defender full stop, has speed and athleticism to really play anywhere.

One thing you would have liked meto was his shepherd to protect Hawkins to allow him to hook a right foot goal....not noticed by the commentators.

No stat.....but it helped produce a goal.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Great goal by Hawkins, but maybe he doesn't get the shot off without the help of Hamling.

I think from what i have seen and its only nab cup but i reckon all 3 of Hamling,Kersten and Thurlow will be good players for the GFC. They all look to have a little bit of something which i believe our development coaches will bring out in the coming years. Good times ahead id reckon.

Great call, DtC. Hawkins superb, but Hamling made it stick. In fact he played an interesting space-creating defensive forward game for a lot of the day and looked classy. Really keen for him to make it at AFL level down the track.

Yes, he's even travelled to Tasmania to get Burbury and Thurlow, to WA for Kersten and Eardley and SA for McCarthy and Murdoch. It's just a shame that they are white...:(

I asked if he was Indigenous, simple question as I heard not one single mention of it until I read meto's post and you are carrying on like I'm some kind of racist or something.

Pull your head in MC, either contribute or keep your personal insults to yourself in the future.

awesome!
He is indigenous http://generationone.org.au/real-stories/joel-hamling

We have gone from having hardly any Aboriginal talent over the last 15 years to 6 on the current roster.

Wells is doing quite a bit of traveling these days :thumbsu:

I think he is probably always travelled quite a bit , but he has a good group around him in the other states.
I wonder if the local that spots the talent should get a bit more cred. For instance I wonder who first proposed Hartman?

Tread carefully guys , even light hearted banter can be misinterpreted.

sorry Turbo but go back and read above and you can clearly see who found my post rather inappropriate to begin with.

I have every damn right to ask whether one of our boys is Indigenous or not!

I read it , and I didn't single out anyone . All I the have said to word posts carefully , I have not done anymore than that.

Yes!......Now that you've mentioned it he did didn't he!....good one!

Hamling is indigenous alright and comes from Broome in WA.

And you'd have to be happy with Travis ATM, even I am.:D

So Thurlow , has a rest this week or plays VFL? The more I see of the kid the more I think he could be a defensive version of Duncan , (a Kelly type with very good foot skills). ie , I really hope they give him plenty of time around the ball , not just parked in the backline.
Even if he ends up being a regular backman. Think Enright , who some have compared him to. He played quite a bit as mid before settling in the backline.

He oozes class and though skinny he looks like he'll get to a good size. Feel very happy we picked him up.

Was on The Footy Show last night and presented as a decent kid. Great size - looks very athletic with a frame that should put on weight pretty easily. Couldn't help but be impressed with Ollie Wines. The kid oozes leadership and is huge for his age (as is Stringer for that matter..). Port should be ecstatic getting him.

I was impressed with him on the Footy Show, I thought he was quite confident and a slight bit of an extrovert once he got going. All those kids look to be great, but did you see Jake Stringer's first posession and goal? That piece of play would come up on a highlights reel of a star of the game, so for a young lad to do that with his first touch in senior footy (nab cup notwithstanding) shows why Geelong were so keen on snaring him in the mini draft prior to him breaking his leg.

That Stringer play looked very good but I reckon there was a touch of arse in the finish - it came off the boot a bit funny. See if he can replicate it...!

I thought they all presented very well too. Confident but not arrogant. Toumpas is going to be a fan favourite of all teams I reckon - a very likeable guy.

Went straight into my SC team after that. Looks like a gem of a kid. Must say Port are starting to get their act together drafting kids like him and getting Hinkley in to coach. They are on the way up. Back on topic Thurlow also presented very well and looks a nice size.

Jackson apart from his size was the less developed of the group, for me that was quite clear, but there's just so much more to come in the next few years.
We certainly can afford him development time which won't be particularly long just looking at his frame.
Good choice Mr Wells.
