Jaguars fired GM Dave Caldwell.
Lasting 7.5 seasons in Jacksonville was probably Caldwell's greatest accomplishment. Given chance after chance despite showing he has no eye for talent, Caldwell was finally canned with the Jaguars losing their 10th straight game Sunday. The Jaguars were a 2017 fluke that saw them lose in the AFC Championship game to the Patriots, but otherwise Jacksonville finished last or second-to-last in every other season under Caldwell's watch. His drafts were horrendous outside of Jalen Ramsey whom the Jaguars decided to trade instead of pay. Caldwell will never get another GM job in the NFL. Coach Doug Marrone and his staff are up next for owner Shad Khan.

The Jaguars are interviewing ex-Texans GM Rick Smith for their general manager job.
Smith interviewed for the Falcons' GM job last week. Jacksonville is a more attractive opening with a talented roster and a chance at the first overall pick. ESPN analyst Louis Riddick and interim GM Trent Baalke are also reportedly candidates for the Jaguars' vacant GM job.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports the Jaguars interviewed former Giants GM Jerry Reese.
Garofolo added that the Panthers could also be interested in Reese as a replacement for Marty Hurney, who they fired from the GM chair earlier this year. Reese would be replacing David Caldwell as the Jaguars GM if he took the gig. Jacklsvonuile is now in the driver's seat to win the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes and has a cast of young players on both sides of the ball. They still have plenty of holes to fill but starting off with Lawrence and some talented offensive weapons has to be appealing for any candidate. Reese won two Super Bowls with the Giants but then fizzled out before being fired with a 90-82 record at the end of 2017.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Doug Marrone is "likely out" as the Jaguars head coach and that former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer could be the replacement.
Marrone is likely to be a victim on Black Monday after what likely will be a 1-15 season. Despite the record, the Jaguars head coaching job is one of the best available given the Jaguars' massive cap space and first overall pick. Meyer would be an exciting hire for all involved. His offenses at Ohio State were electric, and his coaching connections are as good as anyone's. Rapoport reports Meyer is telling his network of friends and coaches that he "expects to land" in Jacksonville. If Meyer ultimately stays retired, Rapoport reports current Ohio State coach Ryan Day is a "potential target". The debate between Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State's Justin Fields would be turned up if Meyer or Day lands the job.

Read where the owner Khan was in charge of the roster.

Marrone indicated several times during the season that his hands were tied over several things. The quarterback situation was probably one of them.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Jaguars are working to finalize an agreement with Urban Meyer for its head-coaching vacancy.
The two are reportedly in "advanced talks" to see if they can finalize a deal as early as this week. Owner Shad Khan interviewed a number of candidates including Titans OC Arthur Smith and 49ers DC Robert Saleh but clearly has his heart set on Meyer, who began "assembling a coaching staff" immediately following his first interview with the team. Meyer (when presumably hired) is expected to pull a majority of his staff from the collegiate ranks over the coming weeks.

Hopefully he doesnt turn out like Nick Saban did in the NFL....

Jaguars hired Urban Meyer as head coach.
The worst-kept secret in the NFL was officially announced by Jags owner Shad Khan on Thursday evening. Meyer is one of the greatest college coaches of all time — and one of the premier football minds of the 21st century — but he has never so much as been a position coach at the NFL level. He is also known for burning incredibly bright before burning out under the weight of stress and expectations. Nevertheless, the 56-year-old is entering into an uncommonly golden opportunity for success, as the Jags own the No. 1 pick — Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence — have an imposing overall picks cache and are awash in salary cap space. Meyer could turn this around in a real hurry. The Jags' next order of business is finding Meyer a general manager, one who will presumably be more or less hand-picked by the head coach.

Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said he won't call plays.
The Jaguars will hire an offensive coordinator, potentially LSU's Scott Linehan to handle playcalling. We'd still expect Meyer to be heavily involved in Jacksonville's offense, but this should help lessen the load in his first season. Owner Shad Khan confirmed Meyer will be involved in hiring the next GM and have input in roster decisions. Both Meyer and the GM will report directly to Khan.

Looking forward to the Urban Meyer Experience.

After reading about his press conferernce it looks like the past season was just setting up for Meyer's arrival.

He had spoken to the owner a year ago,
the roster was stripped of anyone of value in return for draft picks
the tank was on,
Luton and Glennon getting playing time so they could be assessed for the future
Marrone saying his hands were tied about things he could and couldn't do meant he was being told what to do from above.

Meyer said he had been thinking about coaching in the NFL for years and had put in six months of serious research into it.
Also has developed a strategy to avoid the health issues of the past.

Now we wait.

Jaguars promoted director of player personnel Trent Baalke to general manager.
Baalke will get another shot at general manager after an up-and-down run with the 49ers. San Francisco made the NFC Conference Championship in each of his first three seasons as general manager, but things flipped in his final three years. He lost coach Jim Harbaugh, hired and fired Jim Tomsula in 2015, and ended up losing his job in 2016 after Chip Kelly's 2-14 season. Baalke returned to the NFL last year as Jacksonville's director of player personnel. Coach Urban Meyer assuredly will have a lot of power in personnel decisions, but Baalke provides the NFL experience Meyer lacks. Baalke's first order of business will be utilizing the Jaguars' league-leading cap space. Then they can throw the "Welcome to Jacksonville" parade for Trevor Lawrence. Baalke was left with a lot of capital to turn around the 1-15 Jaguars.

Jaguars hired ex-Lions OC Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator.
Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, "several teams made a push to hire Bevell" after he finished 2020 as the Lions' interim coach. It's a better hire than new coach Urban Meyer's initial rumored target, Scott Linehan. An NFL coordinator more or less consistently since 2006, Bevell oversaw an explosive 2019 unit in Detroit before Matthew Stafford broke his back. Things were much more uneven in 2020, though bad health played a part. Bevell's vast NFL experience, as well as comfort with both the run and pass, will serve as an excellent sounding board for Meyer as he gets himself up to NFL speed. It's unclear who will be the play-caller.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Jaguars strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle resigned.
Jaguars coach Urban Meyer hired Doyle on Thursday despite a reported track record of questionable training techniques and racist behavior. Last year, Iowa fired Doyle after sending more than a dozen student athletes to the hospital over two decades of coaching and after making a threat about sending a student athlete "back to the ghetto." Meyer "vetted" Doyle prior to hiring him this offseason, but he either glossed over his history or simply didn't care. Obviously the latter. As to why he resigned, Doyle said he "did not want to be a distraction." This is strike one for Meyer, who has brought off-field issues to each team he's been a part of recently.

Jaguars re-issue statement on Chris Doyle, adding Trent Baalke’s name

Mike Florio

The Jaguars are rattled.

In the ultimate Friday-night news dump, the Jaguars issued at statement after 11:00 p.m. ET on Friday announcing the resignation of Chris Doyle, the team’s director of sports performance (for a day). The email from the Jaguars announced that it was a “statement from Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer.”

The Jaguars re-issued the statement on Saturday morning. The Jaguars re-issued the statement because, as explained in the email re-issuing the statement, the first version “inadvertently” omitted the name of Jaguars G.M. Trent Baalke.

So the exact same statement has been issued again this morning, with this title: “Statement from Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer and General Manager Trent Baalke.”

Why bother with that at this point? The email re-introduced an embarrassing subject in the light of day, and it creates the impression (frankly) that Meyer was bothered by the perception that he alone was taking the heat for hiring Doyle.

On Thursday, Meyer said that he, Baalke, and owner Shad Khan were involved in the vetting and hiring of Doyle. (Maybe Khan’s name also was “inadvertently” omitted from the statement. Or maybe it wasn’t.) Thus, the re-issuance creates the impression that Meyer doesn’t want these first-month misadventures to attach only to him.

Given Baalke’s shattered relationship with coach Jim Harbaugh when they worked together in San Francisco, it also bears watching whether the honeymoon between Meyer and his hand-picked G.M. already has ended.

Sports Illustrated's John Shipley notes the Jaguars have not been awarded a compensatory pick for the 11th consecutive season.
Just wild. Compensatory picks are awarded to teams from a private formula based on free agency gains and losses (and now coaching hires). It's a decent barometer of which teams have been savvy and which teams haven't as the process isn't the easiest to crack. Jacksonville not picking a single one up in over a decade is embarrassing, but there are reasons for hope with Urban Meyer, Trevor Lawrence, and a bunch of capital coming to town.
