Jaguars Reportedly Turn Down Urban Meyer Media Request

Any Denver Broncos media members wishing to speak with Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer this week got a rude awakening on Tuesday.

According to Denver Post beat writer Ryan O’Halloran, the Jaguars declined to make Meyer available to the visiting media before Sunday’s game. Under league rules, teams are permitted to turn down requests from opposing media during game weeks.

Still, as O’Halloran notes, it is rare for this to happen.

When a decision like this is made, the obvious question to be asked is why. Is Meyer afraid of being asked about being linked to the USC job? Is he trying to remove something from his plate as a first-year head coach coming off a double-digit loss in Week 1? Or is there another reason or reasons for this move?

Whatever it is, the fact is Meyer’s NFL tenure is off to a disastrous start. First, there was a report this weekend that Meyer is becoming “unhinged” too easily and can’t handle losing, even in the preseason.

Then, his team went out and lost again, this time when it counted against the Texans in Week 1. It’s fair at this point to wonder how long Meyer is going to last in the NFL, because he certainly doesn’t seem cut out for the gig right now.

What a bombshell and anger itll be if he resigns after a week 2 loss. Absolute disgrace/shambles.

He could easily be the type to Petrino it too, just leave a note in the players lockers to say hes outta here.

Well the T.U.M.E. has quickly become T.U.M.L.E., that is, the learning experience.

4-5 wins for the season would be about looking about it for the year.

The Jaguars don't have a rushing attempt inside the opponent's 20 yard line this season.

The Jaguars have breached the red zone once through Week 2. NFL teams have combined for 266 rushing attempts in the red zone through two weeks, according to ESPN's Mike Clay. A dozen teams have at least ten runs in the red zone. Jacksonville's dead-on-arrival offense has yet to attempt a single run inside the 20 -- one of the early season's most remarkable stats. James Robinson has out-rushed Carlos Hyde 16 to 11 through two weeks while taking on most of the pass-catching duties out of the backfield. Jacksonville's offense -- predictable and constantly trailing -- might not offer much in the way of running back production this year. Robinson is barely a flex option in 14-team leagues.

Jaguars TE James O'Shaughnessy suffered a high-ankle sprain in the team's Week 2 loss to the Broncos and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
O'Shaughnessy looked to be on a minor breakout trajectory after seeing eight targets in Week 1 and picking up 24 yards in the first quarter of Week 2. He took the field for 80-percent of the Jaguar's offensive snaps in their opener but will now be sidelined for around a month if the initial report on his timeline holds. Luke Farrell and Chris Manhertz split the tight end snaps with O'Shaughnessy out for most of Week 2. Neither player projects to hold much fantasy value as long as they split reps.

Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said Laviska Shenault (shoulder) is expected to be available to play in the team's Week 3 game against the Cardinals.
Shenault underwent an MRI on his shoulder after leaving the Jags' Week 2 loss with the injury. Meyer has chosen to use Shenault as a gadget player through two games, giving him plenty of looks at or behind the line of scrimmage. He turned his seven targets in -3 yards last week. A matchup with the Cardinals should help Shenault get on track but his suboptimal usage remains a concern. He projects to be a WR3/4 option versus Arizona.

Trevor Lawrence leads the NFL with a 36 percent uncatchable pass rate through Week 2.
No starting quarterback has been more inaccurate than Lawrence through his first two NFL games, which has seen the No. 1 overall pick average 5.4 yards per attempt -- the second lowest behind only Andy Dalton. Jacksonville's offense has struggled mightily in its first two games of the Lawrence era outside an impressive opening Week 2 drive against the Broncos. Lawrence and the Jags will once again be forced into pass-heavy game script this week against Arizona. Lawrence should only be deployed in superflex formats for now.

Trevor Lawrence leads the NFL with a 36 percent uncatchable pass rate through Week 2.

Young Trev can throw the ball, but too many are short, too many are long and too many are to players already covered.

There didn't seem many "dump off "or "easy ëscape" passes.

Don't know if he isn't looking to just dump the ball off for a 3 yard gain or just wants to throw the ball to make the big play or has been told to do it.

Hopefully he will improve in the next few weeks.

Vic Fangio: Urban Meyer told me every week in the NFL is like playing Alabama

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 22, 2021, 2:26 PM EDT

Urban Meyer went 186-32 as a college head coach, giving him an .853 winning percentage that was the best of any in major college football coach whose career started after World War II. But in the NFL, Meyer’s winning percentage is .000.

Meyer, who fell to 0-2 as Jaguars head coach with a loss to the Broncos on Sunday, is finding that the level of competition is a whole lot higher at the next level. Broncos coach Vic Fangio said today that Meyer told him on Sunday that every game in the NFL is a tough one.

“This is the NFL. I don’t know Urban Meyer at all, really, I met him the other day, shook his hand before the game and after the game. And his comment to me was, ‘Every week is like playing Alabama in the NFL.’ That’s it. Everybody’s capable of beating everybody in this league,” Fangio said, via Troy Renck of Denver 7.

In his seven years at Ohio State, Meyer never lost more than two games in any season. With his Jaguars a 7.5-point underdog against the Cardinals, he may lose his third game of the season on Sunday

After watching the highlights it looked like an improved showing from the team.

Even from the highlights it showed there was a decent attempt at a running game and there were more short passes by Lawrence to gain yards.

Still a few overthrows and he takes a bit too long to survey the field before throwing, still early days.

Another tight end to help protect Lawrence and give another receiving option is a good thing.

Pity there wont be Darnold to D.Arnold anymore tho'

Arnold's blocking isn't very good but he will provide Trev with a far more reliable and athletic passing target than the current TE's on the Jags roster.
