Won’t be a FA until the end of 2023, but a lot of talk around that the Cats, Tigers and Crows are trying to get in a year early to secure his services.

Would seemingly become a hell of a lot more gettable if Taranto re-signs.

Post the inside word here. Where will he end up? My guess is he either sticks around at GWS for at least one more year or heads to Tigerland.

Cats have been into him for a few years now. I think he’s a super midfielder.

On the market I’d say he’s worth a first rounder + second rounder
Prestia was pick #6 ask yourself this is he a better player than Dion?

Looks a real old 25/26, would not want to give up much for him.

We chased him hard two years ago and will again. Id offer a first and a future 2nd but i doubt theyd take it (especially as our picks will be late). Honestly i expect they hold him to his contract it would take a huge haul of picks to get him out this year.

They will trade out others to help the cap squeeze not hopper.

Giants have 4 players taking up more than 4 Million of their cap alone. All of which are midfielders expect toby who rotates through the fwdline.

They cannot afford to pay another midfielder (hopper) big money.

Giants have ****ed their cap. Do not help them. They are not far off being where Collingwood were recently.

They simply cannot afford to keep hopper and taranto, they know it, so why give them a fair price?

Thanks Adrian, that strategy has worked wonders for you during trade week.

We showed with Jeremy Cameron and Bobby Hill we will play hard ball until the deal is reasonable. There are always mechanisms available to manipulate a cap.

There is this thing called goodwill when involved in trading. Sometimes you have the upper hand, other times you don’t. If you don’t act with any consideration of this you often pay a price down the track.

The players price in terms of trade will be determined by demand and all of the players listed have interest.

If you think you will be fleecing anyone you are wrong and don’t be surprised if that attitude comes back to bite you as your own list starts to develop.

I think there are a couple of elements at play. They have those long contracts signed and locked into their cap. They also have a young player or two like Green and Callahan out of contarct next year..and would want o have dollars to fend of interest. How much does Taranto help if he goes. Hopper is still contracted but do they need money till next year?

If they really want to solve a SC issue..if thats required.. is the collingwood approach the way to go? They could probably move one of those long term guys if the kept some dollars.

I think they have time with Hopper. They may not have money to match next year.. but this year they do not have to just give Hopper away.

I doubt Essendon want them but the facts are giants need them gone.

Go play hard ball and * your cap further rofl. I don’t care

Most clubs tend to think about the what comes around goes around... there are exceptions but if both sides walk away grumbling about giving too much ground.. its probably fair.

How much would Taranto clear cap space this year I wonder? I suspect as, this thread about Hopper, that GWS have time. They might be proactive but they will not do deal that is not fair , and to their advantage. They have time unless something is coming like it was for Collingwood.

Nobody really knows as we can’t see what is paid upfront and what is moved back but logic suggests he and Hopper would be in around 650k, Hill perhaps 450, Bruhn is on a standard rookie contract.

I doubt Davis will continue and one of the rucks will also move so there will be a fair bit cleared. This on top of Cameron going last year and other departures.

There is no doubt some mistakes have been made in the contracts of some of the bigger players but it’s a consequence of being a small NSW club with limited support and no cola.

I love how these supporters of big Melbourne clubs like to judge our situation. It is far from a level playing field, always paying more to keep players, particularly young draftees, no father/son, limited outside levers to attract players.

The club got plenty to start with but a lot of that has now dried up and it’s facing a fairly grim reality. Needs some more support now or will become a basket case.

Yep . It tough task..Id like to say it will change soon... but I think going to be hard for a long time to come. Im not sure Cola is the answer or more draft picks

Do you see Hopper as getting traded?

Why would you not trade out taranto hill bruhn and some other structurally less important players and not keep hopper though? They can clear cap without getting rid of him imo.

The offer would have to be as good as the likely FA compo. People thinking firesale are wrong, the makeup of the list is out of whack.

When Brandon Ellis left on a 5 year, $600k per year deal which is probably going to be pretty similar to what Hopper gets offered - we got a 2nd round compensation pick 39.

So you're saying you'd be happy with the same? Tell ya what, we'll even sweeten it to pick 27. Deal.

Would love him at the Crows, we've got plenty of cap space, But we screwed GWS over Hately pushing him to the PSD so they wouldn't do us any favours.

I think you'd be looking at band two compo (end of first round pick) at best. I can't see Hopper being in the top 5% of salaries in the league.
