Its determined to gauge what the Giants would get next year if he then left as a FA compared to what a team would likely have to pay to get him this year.

The Ellis comparison that was brought up was only to review FA compensation not what Hopper would cost. I doubt there is anyone out there that would think that the Giants would deal for an end of 2nd round compo pick.

If he leaves to either the Tigers or Geelong, our firsts would need to be on the table 100%. If we get something back with it then great but that would depend on what number the 1st rounder is.

With Hopper getting around $600k, I would think its fair to value him in the 11-15 range personally.

It started by a GWS fan saying they wouldn't accept anything less than what they'd get as compo if he was a free agent. I pointed out that that wouldn't necessarily work in GWS' favor given some compensation precedents.

You think Hopper will get a better deal than 5 years @ $600k? Cos that was the only comparison made between the two. The whole compo angle was also brought up by a GWS fan, not a Richmond fan.

Do you understand how the compo picks are decided? It's mainly based around the deal offered and the age of the player and if Hopper leaves he'll be the same age Ellis was when he left.

Zac Williams got $800k + for 6 years. Hopper is a far better player. If Richmond only have peanuts to pay then somebody else will trump them.

That was a ludicrous contract by Carlton and one I'm sure the club would regret in hindsight. Still, at the time he was one of the best half backs in the league and Carlton thought he could make the transition to full time midfielder, which didn't work out obviously.

We know what Hopper is, there is no extra wiggle room for potential in this potential deal. $600 x 5. 700 x 4. Somewhere around there.

Comparing plyer salaries is one of the biggest waste of times and it is constantly done on these boards.

A players talent and ability is not the only thing that dictates the value of a player.

If there is a surplus of inside mids in any given year it could impact the willingness to overpay for one. If clubs have multiple options available they may be more willing to pass on option A and B to get option C at a better price.

But if the market is really dry for an inside mid you could get bidding wars and desperate teams that drastically rise the price of a player.

Personally think Hopper sits around that 700k per year, but would not be at all surprised if a club came along and thought he was an important piece and they paid above that to get him through the doors.

He is only just about to enter his prime, is already one of the better inside mids in the game. Not exactly sure of the Giants cap situation but anything short of a mid first for him is a disaster and i doubt they would budge on that.

I've heard from someone I trust that his brother lives in Geelong and played at local level. I'm still trying to determine the validity but can't find anything.

He has 2 brothers, older Zac & younger Sam. I know at one stage Zac was living in Torquay. Last I heard of Sam he was studying teaching in Albury.

I don't know if those facts are still true, nor if Zac played AFL at local level in the Geelong area (Zac certainly did play youth AFL as a kid, that's how Jacob got into playing; Sam plays too). If true (and I suspect it is), that would be somewhat of a drawcard for Jacob to the Cats, unfortunately. Hopefully not the whole story, though.

I really hope we miss out on him. Don't think he is worth the trade/salary cost and think our list profile suits someone a little younger.

He's 26 before next season starts, I think we should be targeting 10 year players in the 21-22 age next year.

Yes that was in fact him but he moved to geelong for uni in 2016 (which is what landed him at st marys) so he would have finished his degree now so wouldnt surprise me if hes moved elsewhere.

If we had such a cap squeeze, we wouldn't be contemplating bringing in Grundy, who would cost more $ even if Pies tip some $ in. As others have said, it's more a case of balancing the list player types. And presumably Hopper has indicated he might look to go to a Victorian club next year as a FA, so we're probably enquiring to determine if we'd get better compensation as a pre-agent this year.

Anyone thinking GWS will move him for a second round pick has got their head stuck a long way up their arse.

It’s over a million and people within the club have quoted it at the figure I mentioned. Taranto and Hopper go and you have 1.3 plus Hill at 450 and you save 250 on Bruhn (200 for the kid that comes in). That and a few other moves and you have enough for a subsidized Grundy, not that I think we should do that. Every club in the comp will budget over for next year and then smooth it back over with shifting players and moving money.

If he's not worth the cash he'd require, and gws need cap to keep taranto, then wouldn't they be looking to some other club to offload the contract rather than find more cash to offer him?
