That's in trade week, Hughes always drafts the best available player.

If we're looking for a good KPD in trade week, but don't end up getting one (which is likely to be the case), why would we not try and get a potentially good one in the draft? Does our desire to get a good KPD just fade away come draft time and we just try our luck again in next year's trade week?

I don't like this best available player crap either. To me it seems like a broken philosophy. Mid year our weakness was our forward line, we moved Waite up there permanently with Hendo and all of a sudden we started winning games by huge margins and being competitive with tough teams, our weakness became the defence. If we can start to improve on that, then we can actually look at getting best available but when there is an obvious weakness in our defence we need to fix it.

The only sort of mid I'd be interested in is a tough, courageous inside mid with decent disposal and speed. That sort of player won't last till pick 14 let alone 18.

Mumford went for pick 28 and he is 100x the player Cam Wood is

That's my point exactly! If he was traded for pick 14 then Sammy is worth pick #1,2 AND 3!

Good ruckmen like good KPP are way too valuable to let go for nothing

I'd advise Carlton supporters to ignore the opinion of Port Adelaide supporters on Sellar as their irrational hatred for him is due primarily to their insecurity at having selected Boak ahead of him.

It would be akin to Carlton supporters wanting Talia to fail just because they selected Lucas. Fortunately, not all supporters are as immature as Port Adelaide supporters.

If it's a KPD they can take a few years to develop, so it's hardly going to address a current deficiency.

You don't know what player will last until pick 14, that's why you don't put all your eggs in one basket and go for best available. No on expected a gun like Lucas to still be available last year either.

Agree that Lucas will be a gun, but sometimes don't you think it would be ok to draft for needs?

You guys have a super midfield brigade already, had a lack of talls and still went for the midfielder

Seems like port dodged a bullet.

We'd be very very lucky to get a mid like I described. Another interesting point about a KPD taking a couple of years to develop, that's true but Hendo will take some time too and so will our mids. Look at what happened to Voss when he tried to trade for 'the now' rather than the future. We get a Tarrant for example and he plays for max 2 years (and that's IF he keeps up his recent good form after the injuries he's received), then we're stuck with a hole in our defence again. I'd rather have sustained success with a good young talented team rather than trying to quick fix our problems every year.

If Adelaide have promised Jacobs the number one ruck slot and offered him $1m over 3 years, then that well and truly offsets the fact that Jacobs wants to leave. Sammy does not hate Carlton and wants out no matter what. He wants a fair pay day and he wants more game time and who could blame him.

Adelaide have committed to Jacobs as much as he has committed to them. They need him and that puts us back into a fair and equitable bargaining position. Pick 14 is very much on the table with that in mind.

For Crows fans that think this is over the odds, try doing what we did and go through years with dud ruck stocks and you would sell your grandmother to get a half decent one into the club as the rest of the team's development suffers without them.

We picked up Hampson for Pick 17 because we desperately needed rucks to come on, and Jacobs is already developed and about to attack number one ruckman head on. Drive him off the lot now instead of hanging around waiting for his modifications to be completed.

So you think Geelong were fairly compensated for Mumford?

For what Mumford had shown, yes

For what sydney are paying him, no

But we aren't offering Jacobs as much money as Mummy is getting, so why would we offer a much better pick

Bock pick it is

1st rounder is too much

2nd rounder not enough

Bock pick is in between

Take Gibbs out an put him at half back and I don't think out midfield deserves this super rating it has. Particularly as we lost Stevens last year and will lose Scotland in the next two years.

We didn't know Bower would have his season ruined by injury, apart from that our first choice talls (Henderson, Waite, Jamison) help up well this season.

Scotland plays mainly across the HB though doesn't he?

Chuck Gibbsy back there, and you still have Judd, Murphy, Simpson, Carrazzo and a very good tagger in Joseph

They're just the ones off the top of my head

I was more replying to the fact that a lot of your fans want a quality tall in the Jacobs trade, but you missed your chance with Talia last year and i don't think we'll be wiling to part with him considering the short time on our list
