Couldn't agree more!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing ... easy to say "should've played him in the middle from the start!"... but there are also some stark realities to deal with. There are probably a multitude of variables and numerous developmental reasons that determined why jacobs has been playing off the back line.

For many on this forum to sit and judge and second-guess the entire coaching panel (with something like a lazy 1500 AFL games experience between them) week-in week-out claiming that they know better is somewhat laughable and smacks of arm-chair arrogance. I generally respect most opinions, but sometimes just have to laugh at the sheer lack of perspective shown by some posters.

sorry - felt like good rant :D:D

Good post and fully agree.

I didn't know what to post in this thread, so this quote will do as well as referring to my sig.

Well (as we did with saying Jacobs needs to be moved up the field) we usually turn out to be right :)

Two players both played off the half backline early in their careers... One of these players was called a complete hack a terrible player and was tossed up as a player that should be delisted. The other is Ben Jacobs. Here are their stats at the same age... Care to guess who the other is?

(also I'm not saying that this scenario applies directly to Ben Jacobs its more of a lets give him a little more time kinda thing.)

I'm gonna go with... a player who also had a coach who played him in the wrong position to start his career.

Corey Enright

Hahaha, did Chopperdave just compare Ben Jacobs with Corey Enright?!

Now I've seen it all.

Edit: Thought you guessed CE cos you knew it haha.

I was just trying to think of a half.back flanker that started slowly but went on.to far higher accolades, Enright with three premierships and numerous AA honors.

It's not Goddard, although he has frighteningly similar stats in his first season to whoever this is!

Edit: So this is what it's come to hey. Being so down on Port's current situation and team that I'm genuinely trying to figure out who a poster on a message board has tried to compare with one of our players in a mystery guessing game.

You can't really compare raw stats like that across eras though- different gameplans with more switching and fiddling around in the backline these days.

I think the bugbear of many with Jacobs has been his disposal efficiency more than the numbers he is pulling out too.

I agree with your point though, which is not judging a player after a couple games. Been said many times but not necessarily put into action.

Haha well I'm bored at work and this is quite amusing so I'll give a couple more hints in that this player is the same height at Jacobs and was a similar build at the same age, and also has had always had queries on his disposal only to go on to become a superstar...

Dane Swan? Marc Murphy?

Took our time but we got there... Those are a 20 year old Dane Swans stats.

Now of course I am not saying Jacobs is going to become Dane Swan but If you go back to 2005/6 Collingwood board you would find the same vitriol being posted by us now directed at Jacobs.

So its not so much of a oh look Jacobs is going to be better than Swan or anything like that its more just saying that some players don't exactly come on straight away but can still become stars. Boyd from the Dogs is another who started as a pretty rubbish half back. I know different scenarios but I'm just trying to bring a little bit of a positive outlook here.....

I just wanna point out that if you go through my posts, I've never written Jacobs off. I've always ALWAYS said move him into the middle of the ground so we can at least see what he can do.

I definitely did write O'Shea off however. I won't deny that one. In fact I remember being one of the only ones to say Jacobs had a better year last year than O'Shea.

I blame the coaches for Jacobs' rocky start to his career far more than I blame Ben.

Guys... I don't think we need to turn this in to a bit of a "defend our initial thoughts on BJ", I was right, you're wrong and anything in between type thread.

Let's simply recognise he is improving, find excitement (with measured expectations) about watching his progress this year... and hope he has a long PAFC career.

We need every positive we can find this season.:thumbsu::thumbsu:
