Even without the contract he's worth very little in a trade
Probably. But hence this quid pro quo. But it wouldn't be because of his contract.

Don't think that's the plan.

We'd be taking the Shiel contract to clear space.

Any compensation would stay at St Kilda. Something else would go to Essendon.
So draft tampering?

Cool we are on the same page.

Yeah I dunno. Was just trying to think of how the two clubs evenly split the benefits of getting band 1.
We'd get an inflated deal by trade. Perhaps 13 for 27 and Shiel

Not a chance

We'd be better just accepting band three and you guys keeping Shiel

No. The idea would be for us to get two first. We arnt handing one back to you
Yeah it's a hard one. 31 if we pay part of his salary would be the deal if we pay what he's worth (probably around band 2)

for a club with a lot of cap space, i'm not sure why we'd be motivated by clearing more space.

would make more sense if the saints viewed Shiel as a part of winning a flag.
Dons sign Gresham
Get FA comp pick from Gresham for Shiel
Saints can still trade for Henry
Dons pay for Shiel so Saints cap space is preserved.

I'd say it's more a Band 2 situation than 1 though.

We have over 2m in cap space. There is literally zero need for us to clear space by dumping Shiels salary for little gain.
In fact it might be the opposite. If we whiff on McKay we might need Shiels salary to meet the cap floor.

It doesn't sound like St Kilda have any real interest in keeping Gresham, so there is no benefit in us inflating an offer just to help St Kilda.
It follows we are certainly not going to offer a Band 1 compensation level deal for Gresham, let you keep the pick, and then hand over Shiel for peanuts.

Can someone explain what benefit we get from overpaying Gresham if we don't get some sort of high pick in return?

Like the two deals seem to be completely separate to each other, as much as can be in two deals between the same club.

Gresham is a weird one. Small frwd but no real pace, not enough tricks as an inside mid , not that clever around the ground to be creative on the outside, not that strong in the core or overhead marking , not corageus enough to play down back as a small lock down defender.... seriously, what the hell is he ?

Gresham wont get band 1 unless it's the same deal they give McKay. If it's 750k then it's probably band 2 or 3.

The benefit I'd imagine would be St Kilda not matching a bid and forcing a trade.

On the other hand I see zero benefit of gaining a first round pick and then handing it over for Shiel.

That is basically a 25 year old Gresham for a cooked 30 year old Shiel at a time that we've been vocal about hitting the draft.

I can't see this deal getting done, but if it did somehow happen I see no way Essendon ends up with that first round pick. More than likely getting a second for Shiel as part of the deal.

SOS and Dodo are a pair of slippery eels so no doubt they will be trying to hatch up something, but we were warned off this kind of deal when we got Crouch.

Shiel is worthless mate. Might get a 3rd rounder on the open market if you were prepared ro pay part of his contract.

No you’re right in being confused, there isn’t a benefit. If you pay Gresham enough to give the Saints a first round compo pick, you would want something else other than “well we won’t match then”. Which most clubs don’t anyway. So far who has matching been saved for? Dangerfield (technically), can’t think of anyone else. Certainly won’t be Gresham.

Monfries was traded as well but that was because we'd signed Goddard and Port had lost both Chaplin and Pearce via FA and it made sense for both clubs to just trade, that way we'd get something (I think it was the Marty Gleeson pick) and their compo was unaffected

I dont expect this Shiel deal floating to eventuate. The AFL shut down a similar thing with Crouch and Dunstan in 2020. I doubt they will let their FA compo system be so openly rorted.

I'd happily take band 2 for Gresham to not have another 30 year old mid on our books and it sounds like from reports Essendon's offer was around that mark.

Strawman.

The point I made was that paying Gresham a band 1 contract only helps St Kilda and is of no use to us if you aren't going to keep him anyway.
There is even less reason to dump Shiel for shoddy return in a salary dump as we are in the best cap space situation in the league.

We arent going to do both those things for the Saints benefit when they dont advantage us.
