Just regarding compo- do you reckon saints would have said “offer him X amount over X years and if you do, and we get a decent pick, we won’t match” ?

Not picking on just essendon in this situation, but do you reckon this would be occurring at all clubs and hence some bigger contracts coming out for free agents?

He's still pretty speculative. On current output after 4 years I doubt he gets taken at pick 21 in this draft.

Has played 3 above average games.

I'll be pretty disappointed if we turn Gresham into Henry.

Late 30's would reasonable for an OOC player moving on potential.
Late 30's is in no way reasonable for what Henry put together over a prolonged period to end the season given your own supporters and many neutrals think 22 (or whatever it ends up) is bang on

there's an actual thread to discus Henry

It's been reported pretty widely that compensation is calculated predominately on average contract value per year and age, with length of contract having minimal contribution as long as it's over 2 years.

Which again shows how broken the compensation system is. If you’re willing to offer a longer term deal, then you clearly rate that player more over perhaps just having a few extra $$spare in the cap at the time to throw at someone.

so's McKay
and Goldy is older than coal!

imagine spending $1.5m on McKay and Gresham
Not sure why anyone would get hung up on the money. It’s all Monopoly money.

When you have to pay 95% of the cap, unless there is someone else you can bring in with that cash, you may as well upgrade your 25.

Front loading players just ends in tears when they are suddenly playing for $350k in year 3 and 4 and an opposition is offering them $650k

Do you think that's a good thing?
I think if it gives us a competitive advantage to gain more players via free agency whilst keeping our draft selections, absolutely. The key is that it isn't a blanket rule, some players do have it in their contracts, it's just not given to all players like other clubs seem to be doing.
