That is the same as triggers though in essence
There would certainly be a way of designing the original contract to have triggers that increase the years and reduce the base rate (as you appear to be suggesting), but I am not sure the AFL would sign off on it. There are no known rules against any of it, but the implication appears to be that the AFL doesn't like that sort of compo manipulation.

But that isn't what we are talking about. We are discussing adding them in after compo is given. I suspect the AFL would likely respond even more negatively towards that based on their reaction to the Daniher debacle.

Then again, despite all the controversy and the deep AFL investigation and press leaks, nothing ended up happening. Once again, the AFL is as clear as a murky swamp.

The AFL sign off on these deals on the regular

They dont even consider trigger years and their rates. Only guaranteed money ie the 3 years

We have really limited information about what they do with free agent contracts like this. I am really basing everything I am saying on the daniher shenanigans (which was allowed under protest) and the attempt by Sydney to reframe the buddy contract (which was banned).

Nothings gonna happen here. The AFL wants players moving easily. Band 2 was given for a 3 year deal. There is nothing in the rules that says the players next contract or an extension has to be of a certain value.

What do you mean what they do?

Theyve said several times they only consider the guaranteed money and years

That is all they consider for determining compo. It is not all they consider for determining if the draft system is being manipulated. There was nothing "illegal" about the crouch/Dunstan deal but it was banned because it illegitimately manipulated compo. Smoothing out a contract straight after compo is given might be similarly banned, but we don't really know because the AFL aren't clear.

How does Gresham on a 3 year deal get band 2 while 12 months ago McStay on a 5 year deal only got band 3?
It is the $s per year that do the heavy lifting. Contract years is only a very minor part for determining edge cases.

Dodoro always makes moves. What goods it ever done? Who could forget the fabled Stringer Saad and Smith trade period.

You draft poorly and trade in the wrong types of players. The list is a mess!
Nothing wrong with the players. You can make a case for the talent of every player. And they fill needs.

The problem is not the players traded or drafted.
The problem is our losing culture.
Put those players in consistently better sides and they'd be better. Most that leave, end up better elsewhere.

Shrewd signing by the Dons, Free Agency definitely working in their favour. If he gets back to his early career form under a different system look out!
Gets back to his early career form?

Snapped Achilles .... knee problems ..... and off field issues if you believe the inside word ..... struggles to kick over 30m and kicks tend to go higher than longer and he has lost the speed power and agility he had early in his career due to the injuries

But hey he will kick a few goals now and again .... anyway and congrats .... "Party Boy" Gresh is now a Bomber on 700k a year :thumbsu:

End of first is pick 20 which will blow out.

Also, Essendon along with West Coast are the only clubs that don't have that increase in salary over the next few years incorporated in their contracts. Essendon therefore offer a little higher than the market to factor that in. From a compensation perspective, clubs would want their RFAs to nominate Essendon and West Coast because the contract will be bigger in value with this arrangement. Essendon and West Coast however save cap space in the long run. It also makes managing the salary cap much easier.

The 700K is closer in value to $600K for other clubs throughout the life of the contract.
Still doesn't justify paying Gresham 700K. He's not worth anywhere near that. Poor fiscal management

What else are you meant to do with $2million space in the salary cap? To give up no draft picks and secure a best 22 quality forward is a no brainer. Would rather that than burning a second round pick on a soft fringe wannabee half back flanker or an end of first for a bloke who can't get a game at another club and is softer than playdough...
If you're going to be blowing that sort of money, at least blow it on someone who's worth it.
Same with McKay and his 800k

Like who? There were only a handful of free agents available and we scooped up three of them. Without selling the farm (draft picks/players) to lure a gun from another club what else can you do..?

Brockmans worth 450k x 3 ?

People need to catch up on the increase it seems.

Fair point , not much out there this time around , but forking out that coin for McKay and Gresham is insane , they will be serviceable, but nowhere in the ball park of 800 k level service. This is not gonna end well at Bomberland

Gresham is circa $700 and likely a front loaded deal so we'd have a heap of money freed up in the 3rd and 4th years to sign on the kids.

The list is bog average in every possible way in every position on the ground.
