Lyon doesn’t want him to stay. He’d have an offer already if he did.
Ross certainly didn't play him this year like he wanted him to stay. Gresham at his best rotates heavily through the middle and has a big impact on the clearances, Lyon played him for most of the year as a poor man's Jack Higgins. 59% CBA's in 2022 down to 27% in 2023.

I could see Richmond being a club where he gets the right role and gets back to the sort of footy he was playing last year. Even Hawthorn despite their ladder position have a pretty strong midfield, Gresham might think he's more likely to get midfield time at the Tigers than the Hawks. Definitely more likely than at the Blues.

There really isn’t that much midfield or CBA available for Gresham at Richmond. We already have Taranto, Hopper, Prestia, Bolton, Ross, Martin as well as Graham and Baker. Dow has shown signs and there is still high hopes for Sonsie. It’s a bit one paced and maybe Greshams disposal is a point of difference but I’d rather give opportunity to Clarke, Coulthard and Cumberland and use Bolton, Martin or Baker more in the midfield

Lyon has said numerous times that he has played Gresham in the role Gresham said he was most suited to.

His manager also said that Gresham was playing in the role that he preferred, that being a forward that pushes into the middle at times.

He's played some quality football as a small forward. Problem is, his form was down no matter where he was played. When he was thrown in the middle he didn't perform overly well and didn't have the impact forwards has had in the past.

I Can't see him being a starting mid at Richmond.

C'mon Adrian, I hear the Tiges are offering Gresh $799K for 5... don't let the arch enemy beat you to him, you're the Big Dog during FA/Trade week, let them know who's boss!

Surely, surely, Adrian isn't looking at Gresham for his already undersized running crew. Surely not.

It is minimizing what is left of Gresham's worth to just pigeonhole him as a small forward. He is not really a good small forward.

He is best as a mid who can play a bit forward. As that kind of player, he is worth a shot at hoping to get him back near his best.

But the last thing Essendon need, and the thing that Adrian can't resist, is another small, weakish mid. The rumours about Essendon and Gresham surely can't be true.

But then again, on Adrian's past form....it is likely very true.

I can't believe Essendon are even considering this. Another underachiever playing for their paycheck is the last thing that club needs

What's his lifestyle like? Any good with showing the young fellas how to do life?
I would say no. Seem to be fairly selfish but that’s from an outside looking in. Just moving for cash

The recruiting world is abuzz with anticipation about whether St Kilda can find a way to secure first-round compensation for free agent Jade Gresham.

He is not worth the $750,000 a year he would need to be paid over three seasons to trigger first-round compensation.

The open question is whether the AFL would approve a separate St Kilda-Essendon trade for a second player who might transfer from the Dons to the Saints.

Essendon’s Dylan Shiel is a player of interest for the Saints given his hard run and explosiveness, so there is some chance he could be on the move.

The Dons said last month he was a required player, but Darcy Parish’s re-signing means there is a logjam of Essendon mids.

So Gresham to Essendon as a mid-forward and Shiels to St Kilda might be a win-win for both clubs

St Kilda would secure a first-round compo pick for Gresham (currently pick 13) and also improve its playing stocks by handing a draft pick to the Dons, who could give Ben Hobbs and Elijah Tsatas more midfield time.

But the AFL would need to approve both deals as fair value.

Some rivals believe the league would approve that kind of arrangement as the latest version of the Jack Bowes salary dump which advantaged Geelong and Gold Coast.

You couldn’t fault St Kilda for trying something inventive as recruiters Steve Silvagni and Graeme Allan attempt to betterthe club’s list.

But you can fault the Crows for wanting to take on Dunstan contract so that we could do the same thing and get a better pick but it was a no no because of reasons.

Watch this one go straight through and VAFL have no issue with it.

Free agency has really descended into farce if something like that can go through.

Instead of the compo being a product of the player value, the player value is becoming a product of the compo.

It also just doesn’t make sense when surely Saints just match the offer & ask for Shiel for Gresham, as Gresham is a RFA - if that’s what the plan is?

If they got a first round compo pick, and then gave that to Essendon, they’ve just given a rival another good pick for no reason.
Or you could look at it as they’ve given Gresham AND a first rounder for Shiel.

Nah I think they would share the compo.

Eg saints get band 1 for Gresham.

Saints then trade like a second rounder for Shiel who would probably actually have zero trade value given the size of his contract.

Which is out and out manipulation of the draft.

I get the idea of a salary dump but this is not it.

Creating/gaining a compo pick from a salary dump is not right and as mentioned tampering.

If for example (and I know this wouldn’t happen) but Essendon said to saints here is our first and Shiel for your second then fair play I have no issue with that. That’s the dump. Not to take Shiel so Essendon can offer 200K more to get a band 1 compo that’s ****ed.

Don't think that's the plan.

We'd be taking the Shiel contract to clear space.

Any compensation would stay at St Kilda. Something else would go to Essendon.

One year at around 750k? Of which we probably pay 250k of?
