So nothing is better than something? If that's what you really think that's ridiculous.

If you demand that someone is worth 2 first rounders/first rounder and a player and then accept nothing - you're doing it wrong.
Port did precisely that, subsequently won a flag and haven't been pigrooted at the trade table since

GC don't weant a scenario where like Brisbane they become the feeder club of talent for unders in every trade

So letting omeara go to the draft is not getting "nothing" / it is an investment in future deals the suns are involved in

3 way trade idea.

Hawks out: pick 10, 1 of Sheils, Burton or Smith
In: O'Meara

Option for hawthorn if not Lyons for pick 26 without Hawks involved.

Maybe I don't know, acting your age, actually providing serious discussion, understanding opposing viewpoints. But no we have classic one liners like Cockrane in here, Comedy gold.
You blokes just don't get that this man epitomizes your unprofessional culture....You've only been in the comp less than a decade, so it's understandable...But until you recognize that the fish rots from the head down, then nothing is going to change at your club.

Then include anti poaching rules so clubs can only talk to players that aren't under their contracts during Trade and FA time. It will stop a whole lot of situations like this where clubs promise players everything then can't find the right capital to get the trade through. Sure it might be the Suns fault we can't attract talent but it isn't our fault the Hawks can't find a deal that matches our wishes.
What difference will that make? As long as there are players who want to go to clubs who can't (or won't) pay what their original club considers fair value, then this situation will continue to arise. Stopping players from talking to clubs will likely just see more players wait until trade period to re-sign, as that is when they can evaluate what offers are available for them. And that's before you consider how difficult it would be to enforce such rules, especially when many of the players and coaches are managed by the same managers.

Here's the problem with the bolded. GC say they want a player as part of the JOM deal, but (presumably) don't want an average, list clogger type player. However, they have been unable to convince a single player, outside of Hanley and Lyons, to join their club who fits that bill. That literally makes it impossible for Hawthorn to send one of their own players to GC, and we can talk to every club in the league about helping out, but ultimately, no player wants to be a part of this deal. We were reportedly trying to be a part of the deal to send Hanley to GC, and the same with Lyons, but it hasn't exactly given Hawthorn much of a chance to be involved with those trades (especially given Lyons is a relatively recent development)

But I was serious - its very hard trading players there.

They went into the trade period saying they want players and yet they will likely walk out with picks 4,6,8 and Pierce Hanley. There is a very big problem there

Why wouldn't they be spending the year trying to improve the culture of the club? Why weren't they making a big play for Sammy M as player/assistant coach? He would have been terrific for the club.

Compare it to GWS - champion team, great coach, good culture.
Your trying to sound like you know what's best for our club but you don't have any idea about trying to built a club in a rugby stronghold and comparing us to GWS and their consessions just highlights it. Chalk and cheese

I know they have had better concessions but sorry mate there is no way this is the only reason they are kicking your ass. Compare your team with the other 17 teams re picks - you should be super awesome by now.

What is "culture". How does one define such an arbitrary term? How does one create it? Seems unless you have a healthy dose of success and a bright path ahead, you have **** all chance of convincing players that there is a future at that club regardless of how much money is thrown at the problem or which coach is giving the rev ups. Letting one of your star players walk for a deal that's obviously unders does nothing except reinforce the status as a minnow club that's there to train players for the Victorian teams. I can't see pick 10 being a great boost to the Suns "culture".

The second problem is that GC is in Queensland, where few AFL players want to live. Moving from Melbourne to the GC is quite difficult when you have a family and friends, as you might understand. Usually when teams bottom out, they go straight back up in a few seasons. The QLD teams aren't doing that because their young talent keeps departing for unders, preventing the club from advancing. So clearly something has to change.

Compare it to GWS - champion team, great coach, good culture.
And a steady stream of academy picks to replenish departing talent that can handily be farmed for more top draft picks. Until the GC academy starts pumping out the numbers enjoyed by GWS, it's hard to see them getting to that level. But then again, GC isn't blessed to have an academy close enough to Victoria to benefit from everyone playing AFL and good proximity to the TAC cup either.

interesting to see Cochrane being pilloried for doing nothing more than standing up for a struggling and stuttering new franchise

if it was Kevin Sheedy, we'd all be saying 'good work Sheeds'...Cohrane is obviously not in Sheeds' class when it comes to verbal dexterity but you can't doubt his passion or his pluck

as to why no other club Chairmen behave this way? well, desperate times call for desperate measures and things have rarely been more desperate than the current state of AFL in Queensland #deadcanary
I don't have a problem with a club standing up for itself either; lord knows we don't see it often enough.

I think the issue with Cochrane is the megaphone negotiation; it smacks of petulance.

Every team has their **** ups but Hawthorn have been reasonable to deal with over the years.
