For the sake of the kid I hope he gets over these annoying minor injuries. Hawthorn have an outstanding record of repairing damaged players, I am sure in the end he will play a lot of good football for the club. Don't judge him or Hawthorn until his career is over. Carlton were the big winners in the Judd Kennedy exchange in the early years but the ledger has been somewhat balanced more recently. Both clubs have turned out winners.

O'Meara is gifted, if Hawthorn cannot fix him nobody can.

Kennedy didn't have dodgy knee problems, was just an unproven kid with potential.

Apart from the apparently crippled Burgoyne who possibly had leprosy when drafted which Clarko cured by blessing him with Hawthorn holy water, who else have they cured?

There is a level of arrogance from Hawks fans about their staff and ability to fix players. The difference between club staff is very marginal if you compare well run clubs.

Cyrils dodgy hammies, they taught him how to change his running style and he plays a lot more games now. One of the reasons O'Meara said he wanted to go to Hawthorn was their medical staff (the big bag of money and the promise of playing in premierships was a handy sweetner)

So a player who had been with them all his career had dodgy hammies and they fixed it? Well, perhaps they caused it?

I don't get the Judd/O'Meara comparisons.

Judd left West Coast after 6 seasons, 130 odd games, B&Fs, Brownlow, premiership and a period as the best player in the game. Carlton were one of 10 Victorian clubs who wanted him and 4 who took a serious interest. We insisted on getting Kennedy back to WA because they wouldn't part with pick 1.

O'Meara hasn't even played 50 games yet, and none since 2014 at the time of being traded.

I only came up with it as an example of someone who reinvented how they played. JOM will have to do similar, of course he hasn't done anywhere near what Judd had when coming to Carlton, nor had Judd missed that much footy

Off the top of my head but Take it as you will......

Max bailey had numerous knee reco's and played in a winning gf.

Lake was on his last legs with chronic calf and other leg related injuries from memory which they sorted.

Whitecross with two knee recos made it back to the seniors.

Burton recently with his buggered knee.

Rioli as mentioned.

Schoenmaker had a knee reco and played in a premiership.

Big fat Stewy Dew whilst not injured needs to be marvelled at.

Gibson tore his hammy off the bone in his first year at the hawks and has gone on to have a stallar career.

Plus the ability of the fitness and conditioning staff to get the team up for 8 years in a row of finals.

I think a lot of thread is mossing the point. Every player is a risk. Hawks obviously did due diligence and assessed the trade in as worthwhile. You can make a good bet and lose, that's the fact of the matter.
We've done a similar thing with Deledio and may well lose. The Magpies took a risk with WHE and it seems to have paid off.
Hawks could still win, he's young, and we have to wait and see. I'm very uncomfortable with the minority who seem to delight in his injury though.

Max Bailey played 43 games over a period of 8 seasons.

Lake played 197 games for the Bulldogs. Other than getting injured during 2011 he played pretty much every game between 2005 and 2012. Wouldn't call that plagued with injury.

Whitecross has just ticked over 100 games in his 9th season. He's played about 30 games in 5 years since his first ACL, none of them memorable.

Rioli misses a handful of games most years. How did you fix him?

Schoenmakers might be recovered from an ACL but he's still terrible.

I reckon Hawks fans are getting a bit carried away with their miracle working medical dept.

O'Meara cost more than Deledio and WHE put together, though.

People got stuck into Collingwood for giving up pick 7 and what ended up being pick 8, but they got Treloar coming off 4 full seasons and a B&F runner up and he hasn't missed a beat. Hawthorn have a LOT invested in a guy who is a risk.

True
Potentially he has a huge upside though. My point was it's a risk assessment, and you can make the right decision and still lose based on chance.

No they don't.

They have one outstanding success story in Burgoyne.

A success story that may have happened at Port anyway.

What else have they got? Croad was wrecked, Stuart Dew did his hamstring twice in 2008.

Hawthorn, or at least Hawthorn fans have a grossly inflated view of what they are as a club. Not that it really matters - their fans are already abandoning them; the one truly 'Hawthorn' thing they have.

Called Orthokine Therapy. Have a read of Sam Lane's 2012 Age piece.

Didn't think Lake had any chronic injury issues when he left. On Dew though, didn't he have hamstring problems as well? I recall a story about him using a scooter to get around as a means to strengthen it - you see them using them at training now.

Sounds like these Hawks medicos should be working in Europe or the USA earning millions a year rather than for a rather insignificant AFL side for a pittance.
Why hasn't the EPL clubs come calling for their expertise?

I wanted to remind myself just what Hawks had to do to get hands on O'Meara.

On the surface the final deal was simply pick 10 from the draft plus Hawks 2nd rd pick for 2017.

Just for a sense of worth of pick 10 Bowes was taken there by Gold Coast but also after that pick any of types like Powell-Pepper or Jy Simpkin available if Hawks kept that pick and not used for a trade.

However pick 10 needed another trade done before that anyway.

When you look at that, it is where the hurt really starts to dig in.
Saints wanted Hawks pick 23, 36 AND their 1st round pick of 2017....... oh boy...
Bent over there big time.

However, pick 23 in that deal only come into Hawks hands by needing to trade Brad Hill to Freo so in a sense we can already see their 1st round pick of 2017, plus Brad Hill are all involved to get access to O'Meara.

We are not finished yet with this selling of the farm investigation.

There was a snag in trying to get O'Meara by also trading their future 2nd round pick after they already traded their precious future first round pick to Saints. The future trading rules require that if you trade a future first rounder you cannot trade the 2nd too unless you find another 2nd round pick for the same future draft year.

This is where the trade with Carlton was needed to get it across the line.
If Hawks got the GWS 2nd round pick that Carlton got from GWS in a deal to get Marchbank and Pickett on last day then that allows Hawks to give up their own 2nd rounder that Gold Coast wanted to lock in the O'Meara deal. Therefore if Hawks do a deal with Carlton they keep the GWS 2nd rounder and keep within AFL future pick trading.

To get the deal done with Carlton , Hawks gave Carlton 48, 66 and 70 for the draft of 2016.

However, it does not even end there because picks 48, 66 and 70 were only gained previously from trades done that involved giving up no less than, wait for it.... Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis.
Picks 48 and 66 involved in picks swaps with Melbourne that were attached to Lewis deal.
Pick 70 that also given to Carlton was gained as part of the Sam Mitchell trade to West Coast.

At the end when I looked at all this and saw all their previous trades of Brad Hill, Mitchell, Lewis and Saints getting Hawks first round pick for this next draft lead me to one type of reaction... best summed up by this...

Hawks might luck out in the same way the Saints might pick up the next Morabito with the pick they got in the trade

Lets not turn this into hawthorn fans blah blah.

Im not one to run with a line i dont know for sure and that's probably why ive never said these things.

But the hawthorn medical staff conversation is passed down from the club. Hawthorn have invested a lot in its medical team and seemingly have held it in high regard pre off field cap.

If a hawthorn supporter has claims that so and so is best in the business its probably because thays how the club feels. Call it arrogant if you want but its the type of arrogance that takes you to 3 flags.

Wernt Geelong running the best recruitment team line through there many big years????

Apples and apples no?

Because everyone on bigfooty had forgotten what Hawthorn gave up already...... Ground breaking post.
