They fixed Clinton You... oh, no.

"Coming back the next pre-season, I bulked up a bit and probably did too much running too quickly. By the time the (2009) season started, my groin and hip were shot, so I had a long battle trying to get up for the season and didn't. I had surgery to try to fix it and then (later) little things were still happening."

O'Rourke, 9 matches in 2 and a half seasons. Thought they'd fix his hamstring problems from GWS, they're still pinging with monotonous regularity.

Hawks fans have terrible memories, they don't talk about the breakdowns. Rioli has missed huge chunks of 2013, 14 and 2017. Hardly an injury success story.

Whitecross has never recovered.

Burgoyne had already returned to Port's team at the end of the season before moving to Hawthorn.

It's one of those myths that just keeps keeping on.

Geelong had a few good drafts, but lately they've had some off ones, perhaps it was more luck than good management.

Off the top of my head but Take it as you will......

Max bailey had numerous knee reco's and played in a winning gf.

Lake was on his last legs with chronic calf and other leg related injuries from memory which they sorted.

Whitecross with two knee recos made it back to the seniors.

Burton recently with his buggered knee.

Rioli as mentioned.

Schoenmaker had a knee reco and played in a premiership.

Big fat Stewy Dew whilst not injured needs to be marvelled at.

Gibson tore his hammy off the bone in his first year at the hawks and has gone on to have a stallar career.

Plus the ability of the fitness and conditioning staff to get the team up for 8 years in a row of finals.

Another way to look at it is that a lot of Hawks players do their knees in the first place...

I agree that the Hawks medical team arent miracle workers. For every heartwarming scenario there are a few persistent problems like O'Rourke.

They do a fantastic job and are prepared to work hard to get results, but so do many other teams. Sydney do a fantastic job, Nth did for a few years too.

You could even argue that Cyril took too long to work out as well. Its great that they did work it out and maybe in the old days they would never have worked out hammy problems like that: see Rioli family history

I imagine that there is some trial and error with both treatment and diagnoses for recurring problems (as opposed to standard/common injuries)

Pretty crazy that modern medicine got Ryan Burton playing again given how disastrous his injury was (and that wasn't all Hawthorn - it was also the medical practitioners who worked on him prior to him getting drafted)

Much unlike my beloved Essington who seem to turn innocuous strains into season ending injuries through the rehab process (although we've definitely improved there since Crow came on board despite my initial misgivings about him).

Wasn't Burton always going to be back in a reasonable time, but the big doubts are on his longevity? i.e. that his knee would only last a few seasons?

Your examples are very poor. I.E. Cyril did his knee this year - not his hammies o_O

WX has definitely recovered (he had two serious knee injuries too!)

O'Rourke is a good example though.

I am petty and very jealous of Hawthorn's success at the expense of my team so I hope Jaegar becomes a very expensive paperweight and it leads to the Hawks spending decades in the wilderness. Am I doing it right?

You forgot the tokenistic "Oh but I wish the best for Jaegar - he was a great player" which somehow eradicates the earlier sentiment. Otherwise you're doing pretty well.

There are haters from all clubs. On my board there were horrible things said about Buddy with his mental health issues. Couldn't believe what I read given the joy he had given Hawthorn fans for years. I had some Buddy schadenfreude moments myself - but never stooped that low.

I'm only human and I'm passionate about my club so I don't mind a bit of banter. Yes, Hawthorn has been a thorn in my side and I bloody hated losing to you a few weeks ago. In short I'm a football fan. Wishing the worst on JOM to spite Hawthorn is not the way I would play it though. The bloke has obtained his dream of playing at the highest level and should already be one of the best in the league right now so any chronic injury is a genuine tragedy if they can't get him up on a regular basis. Hawthorn have rolled the dice and it might pay off or it might be a disaster. Who knows? I'm not going to gloat about it to make myself feel better. People in glass houses and all that. ***cough*** Kurt Tippett ***cough***

Did his hammy in the other seasons though?

The point is that there's no evidence that the Hawthorn medical staff are any better or worse than the medical staff of other clubs.

But if O'Meara went there for the myth, then I suppose spruiking the myth has served its purpose. Although that type of myth would tend to attract the chronically injured such as O'Rourke, O'Meara etc.

I didn't say your general point of Hawthorn not being way ahead of all other clubs isn't worth raising - just thought that your examples were a little lazy

And - what's wrong with being seen as the half way house for injured players

It means we pride ourselves on looking after our players welfare ;)

Let me try.

We won the trade because Hawthorne.

O'Meara's knees are fine because Hawthorne.

Our recruiters are perfect because Hawthorne.

This is all part of the Hawthorne plan.

Clarko will just rebuild and win a bunch more flags because Hawthorne.
