Nah, 2 year trade ban. Followed by a Salting of the earth at dingley. Followed by taking the taking of all of hawthorns first born children. Our dear leaders at the AFL, if anything are merciful bunch.
Moses will save us

**** me, is there something in the water in Eastern Melbourne that inhibits comprehension skills?

I never said he left to chase $, I said he was offered $750-800k by the club he was already at - a figure published in a statement by said club - and that set the ball park for suiting clubs.

What's more realistic?

O'Meara is offered $750-800k to stay with Gold Coast and has other clubs sniffing around knowing that figure and signs for Hawthorn for around that figure?

or

O'Meara is offered $750-800k to stay with Gold Coast and has other clubs sniffing around knowing that figure and signs for Hawthorn for $500k because Hawthorn exceptionalism?
There is another alternative that he had already committed to hawthorn on whatever figure before gold coast tried to up the figure to keep him. He stood by his word and hawthorn stood by theirs to get him.

Ugh, I can't put you on ignore and you cannot process 'don't quote me again'.

ABASI is a hypocrite mate. He puts people on ignore all the time because he can't deal with them poking holes in his one-sided arguments.

Easiest thing to do is to simply ignore him when he quotes you. He will leave you alone eventually.

You quote my post, remove the context, then get upset because I think you're arguing against that specific statement.

Btw, The more realistic scenario is that O'Meara didn't give a toss what the Suns were willing to offer, as he wanted out(which has always been my point).

O'Meara sounds like a smart kid. I'm guessing he looked at the GC medical team's record (the one that Eade has suggested as shit since leaving), and the record of the Hawthorn medical team and did this piece of maths:

Performance based $800k x 0 games = a shit load less than $800k year.
Performance based $500-600k x some games = a shit load more than what he'd get if he stayed at GC.

Of course we haven't got him on the park much more than GC had in the previous 2 years, but 5 AFL games is > 0.

There are also other factors to consider. His girlfriend in Melbourne, and Melbourne being the Hub of the AFL. Players have a lot more opportunities both during and after their careers by having as high a profile as possible in the Melbourne market, and O'Meara would have likely factored that into any relative wage offers.

Also from GC's point of view, they'd spent a lot of $'s on setting up marketing around Jaeger's name, so for them overspending made more sense that it would have for other clubs competing for Jaeger's signature. Basically he was worth more to GC than his southern suitors, and Jaeger probably understood that.

So I think it is completely realistic that he would have moved to Melbourne for less than what GC was offering. GC nearly ended his career. It still remains to be seen if their 3 years of medical mismanagement haven't destroyed a massive talent.

These threads are so confusing to read when so many of the posters taking part are on my ignore list. Says a lot about the thread too because it aint a big list..

Indeed, I thought this thread was full of well reasoned arguments, then I glanced at it on my mobile phone where I'm not logged in and was shocked by the massive drop in post quality once my ignore list was no longer active (and like you I have a very small ignore list).

Shouldn't have played IMO. Would have been better for both O'Meara and the club to have him play out the season at Box Hill, now that he's played this game, he'll get one more game for the season versus up to 4 or 5 games to increase confidence in his body and get touch back playing for Box Hill who look likely to go deep into finals. Now disqualified for BH finals. Feel we caved into pressure to show he could still play out an AFL game, was always going to be hard in his first game back, and we are so thin in the midfield with Shiels also out that it was amazing we even got close tonight.

Shadow of the player he once was. Sad to watch. Injuries and time off never end well. I think Hawthorn may be able to offload him to WA - maybe for a 3rd (at best) or 4th round pick. Will free up a little bit of cap space.

Why are Hawthorn so desperate to play this guy in the AFL senior team?

Played him from Round 1 after only playing the better part of 3 NAB Mickey Mouse Cup games; was average and then got hurt. Brought him straight back in after he recovered from his initial knock; was average and then got injured. And now, after not even 1 full VFL game they once again bring him back into the AFL team, and once again he was average.

This is a guy who hasn't played senior football for the best part of 3 years. Give him some time in the magoos to get his match fitness and touch back. He isn't up for AFL at the moment. What are the Hawthorn fitness team doing?

Showed some good signs I thought. Some creative handballs, but of most importance - he moved exceptionally well.

Junk in the first quarter, but worked his way in to the game a lot more which is fair enough given his history.

He's still on a hiding to nothing at this point. He can't do anything good enough to appease the doubters nor anything bad enough to sour his supporters. But the best news is now he is at least doing something.

Really happy with his first game back. Hopefully we see an improved performance on all fronts next week!

Off to a great start.

Fair enough opinion, but not necessarily correct.

I'd back the Hawks coaches to make the right decision and know the `whys and wherefores' behind his selection tonight.

It is a fair question. The only thing I can think is that they seem to believe he needs to build confidence at the AFL level where possible. His touch was certainly pretty good at VFL, but clearly not up to the pace at AFL at the moment. I think it is pretty clear when you look at his VFL vs AFL stats that his handball preference at AFL level is about not having a good feel for the pace of the game, and ending up rushing with the first option. Kicked a lot more when he played VFL last week where he was given more time. IMO it was a massive risk bringing him into a midfield that had already lost Shiels, and we paid the price tonight.
