Interesting thread, I have PT in my left knee and have issues at L1, L3 and SI. Also have quite a large kink in my back but its a touch higher (apparently from compression fracture of a vert when i was young).

The logic ITT is first rate.

Do not in any way feel sorry for the Hawks, and believe that their desire to 'prove' the trade was worthwhile has likely contributed to Jaegars issues.

The weight of expectation must have added to the stresses on the knee joint.

Nope wrong. He had bone stress in his patella, nothing to do with the patella tendon.

Player has history of patella injuries. Player suffers patella injury.

But Jaeger and Hawthorn can be mocked relentlessly for this trade?

Injuries are fair game but only for other clubs?
You just need to accept that it was a pathetic decision to recruit Jaeger .

It seems there are some decent physio minds in this thread, so I'm sure they could shed more light...

But in a thread where it's suggested lower back stiffness has caused JOM's patella tendon issues, how can anyone here argue with confidence that his new patella bone injury is unrealated or completely different to the tendon injury (or previous surgery's on that part of the knee).

Laughable really.

My honest opinion as a Hawk supporting Physio is this:

Jaeger has a long history of patella tendon issues, from what I have read since he was about 15 or 16. After he pulled up sore in 2014 GC tried to rectify this by sending him to a surgeon in the UK who specializes in patellar tendon issues. A procedure was done to free up the tendon from its sheath (scar tissue can form between the tendon and sheath when exposed to prolonged inflammation) and to remove bone spurs. Jaeger rehabilitated his knee over the offseason and then ruptured the patellar tendon in his first game back in 2015. He subsequently missed 2015 and came back in 2016, played half a dozen games before going in for a "clean up" or arthroscopy of his knee at the end of 2016.

Jaeger now has a bone stress injury to the patella. This could be caused by multiple things, it could be due to poor tracking of the patella in its groove, it could be from a direct knock or it could be overload where either the quad or patellar tendon attach to the bone. AR stressed that the tendon was in fact fine.....take from that what you will, but if you take it on face value then it is not a direct overload of the tendon itself which is great news. However if that is the case it is most likely due to poor mechanics of the patella and how it functions in the groove of the femur. This dysfunction occurs due to imbalances in the muscles that attach to the patella and creates friction between the undersurface of the patella and the groove of the femur. Many factors such as tightness and/or weakness and/or poor motor control of muscles in the calf, thigh and hip can all contribute to this as can back issues (thanks Sven) as can flat feet, training overload, poor footwear etc

Post surgery it is possible for issues such as this to arise as muscles weaken and tighten, scars form affecting the way things move and motor patterns change due to pain etc.

My guess is, providing Andrew Russell is telling the truth, and I have no reason to doubt him, that these imbalances have arisen due to surgery and such a long time out and they need to be sorted before he can get back to 100%

Nothing too outrageous. It was a suprise he was tracking so well after preseason, then he got hurt and its created a new setback. Luckily its a marathon not a sprint with Jaeger and we dont him this year anyway

That said, the amount salivating by the media and the general football public about this kid is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I get that people don't like Hawthorn but the fairly widespread, pretty poorly hidden delight that a 23 yo kid cant get on the field... Its pretty poor form.

Classic spin from the Hawks!! It's funny reading how many supporters are falling for it....again....he's done this year.
Any hawthorn supporter that can't see what a disaster JOM currently is, is in denial!! He isn't going to play another game this season and will have a slow start to pre-season next year. How anyone can see his recruitment as a positive is actually embarrassing, especially for what the club gave up for him...

Spot on, I congratulate you for taking out your hawthorne glasses and seeing this for what it is.

Why do you think its poor form? Hawthorn sold the proverbial farm to get him, high risk strategy. I think the interest is deserved based on that alone. Hawthorn has been up the top of the table for a while, of course other supporters want to see them balls this up. Fundamentally its not about Jager, its about Hawthorn putting all their eggs in the Jager basket(or bomb, if you would prefer).

Remember all the Hawthorn supporters at the start of the season who said there was nothing wrong with his knees and Andrew Russell would get the best out of him.

How is that working out for you now?

The highlight was when they all came out of the woodwork after that 30 handball game he had. Looked like he was running in mud all year. They'd have gotten more mileage out of trading for Andrew Swallow.

So you would rather JOM never play another game of AFL, just so you can have one over a few Hawks supporters?

Why do I think that salivating over a 23 yo being unable to play is poor form?? You want me to spell it out?

Interest in his case medically isn't poor form. Schadenfreude over our shit season isn't poor form. Discussing the mega trade isn't poor form.

I've just always found glee and crocodile tears over a kid struggling to get a good run together, poor form.

I think what he means is to seperate the player from the club.

You wouldn't want injuries to ruin the career of a player just because Hawthorn sold the farm for him.

It is sad to see him unable to play, regardless of who he plays for.
