Jaeger O'Meara

Why is every main board thread either about Richmond or Hawthorn OR if they have nothing to do with Richmond or Hawthorn, the discussion ends up by talking about the mythical "Mitchell, Omera, Wingard, Worpel, Henderson, Smith" midfield brigade?
I mean this thread is about Jaeger and how he will got this year.
Pretty sure that mythical midfield brigade will play together at some point this year.

Who he is on the field with and what role he will play is part of the discussion about how he will go.

As to your other claim I can see plenty of threads not about Richmond or Hawthorn on the first page

So despite the fact very few teams field a designated tagger or use tagging tactics, JOM, Hawthorn’s third best inside midfielder was tagged most weeks?

Surely not even Hawthorn supporters believe such an elaborate mistruth.

Did you watch every Hawthorn game? Because I know Brishawk did.

Also you do realise there are hard and soft tags, stoppage match ups. Players that have defensive assignments in the midfield to stop an opponent.

Tagging isn't just what Crowley used to do in this context.

Well Mithell didn't play last season so he was at worst our 2nd best mid, despite Worpel winning the B&F i think you will find a lot of Hawk fans still think Jaeger was the better mid last season.

I agree tagged most weeks is probably an overstatement, but he was tagged at times throughout the season and was definitely the focus of a lot of opposition teams.

So no real ‘tag’ as such, just a third best mid matching up on JOM and ensuring he doesn’t get a good run at it while making space for their primary ballwinners to do their thing.

That’s called having an opponent.

This is what we’re looking for.
So you finally agree that opposition coaches did put time in to him, he was tagged throughout the year and he was receiving a lot of attention throughout the year?

great!

No, he was tagged on a few occasions by the few teams that actually run with a tagger, but otherwise teams backed their own systems and played on their terms.

JOM just isn’t the kind of player you do any significant planning for.

you say that but it just isn't true, may i ask how many of our games you sat down and watched last year? 18? 20? All 22?

You keep calling him our 3rd best mid as some form of negative yet going in to this year if he is deemed to be our 3rd best mid that is the entire point Hawk fans are making. Last year up until at least the very end he would have gone in to each game with the opposition team rating him as our best mid.

More help = potentially increased output. Wouldn't have thought it was a hard concept to understand

That's not what I said and I notice you didn't day how many of these games you've watched.
Yet you are arguing like you know what happened in all of the Hawks games.

Ok .. define most? 90%?
No idea I've not sat down and rewatched games and come up with a number.
I also didn't say how often I thought he was tagged. I said you were arguing the wrong point because the claim wasn't that he was tagged all the time.

Give me an estimate of most? The fact is omera isnt in the best 30 midfielders in the afl.

Eh maybe maybe not, pretty irrelevant though. Still improving each year and hope to see that continue.

What has that got to do with anything?
Do teams not try and shut down opponents to give themselves the best chance of winning?

I thought that was more rhetorical and the standard Bigfooty attempt to undermine credibility, so I’m glad you’ve got your Leigh Sales “gotcha” moment.

What’s actually becoming apparent is how little attention Hawthorn supporters are paying to Hawthorn games, and even more alarming, how few neutral games are being witnessed to actually provide some context and a point of comparison for players like O’Meara.

Last year his output increased without Mitchell in the team, which makes a lot of sense because he was forced to take on more responsibility in the midfield. If the reverse holds true it’s actually far more likely he will go backwards in terms output, and produce similar to 2018.

I’m also not understanding the mentality that he was somehow played out of position last year. He is now a career inside midfielder (hasn’t played as a permanent outside mid since 2014) and he is best used generating clearances which was his role.

Mitchell returning only pushes him down the pecking order.
