Jaeger O'Meara

Why are Hawthorn so desperate to play this guy in the AFL senior team?

Played him from Round 1 after only playing the better part of 3 NAB Mickey Mouse Cup games; was average and then got hurt. Brought him straight back in after he recovered from his initial knock; was average and then got injured. And now, after not even 1 full VFL game they once again bring him back into the AFL team, and once again he was average.

This is a guy who hasn't played senior football for the best part of 3 years. Give him some time in the magoos to get his match fitness and touch back. He isn't up for AFL at the moment. What are the Hawthorn fitness team doing?

VFL and AFL are complete different beasts. Every game he plays in the AFL gives Jaegar, the fitness/medical team and the coaches more information on how to better handle him.

We recruited him to be an AFL player. Not VFL. I'd rather they run him through the gauntlet and expose him to as much senior football as possible.

He got through tonight unscathed and played well in parts. Very clean and moved well. Still not at full fitness and was blowing hard at the end of the quarter. Now the interesting part is how he pulls up. We all know he can play out a game but the problem is his recovery.

Hawthorn 2016 Draft/Trade catastrophe - cross

Ed Barlow looked really good in his first game too. As for Mitchell, he was always going to be a tick for you guys.

In terms of O'Meara, well we always knew he was a great player, that was never in question, but it is his longevity which was the concern and right now we do not know enough about that to give him a tick. If he can get through most of 2018 injury free then it is definitely a tick.

I'm not that fussed tbh - don't think we've given up too much for him and if he plays he plays - if he doesn't then so be it. I will be sad for him and what could of been rather than it being the "dud" trade that so many seem to be hoping for

I know he was good last night, and in particular in close with his handballs and tackling. But I honestly can't remember him having any effective kicks where he would run and carry, and then kick long. Would there still be a issue with his injury and that part of his game?

This happened early in the season too. I think it's what he's been instructed to do. When he played HFF the week before against Carlton he had more kicks than handballs.

Pretty sure it's about him getting up to speed again and learning when to take on tacklers and break out into space to give himself room.

His first 2 games at the start of the year were similar. He kicked more as he got comfortable.

He now has a full preseason to work on it.

Hopefully that comes with time as he fits into the game plan better and gets some easier ball on the outside.

Looked good otherwise.

Certainly a one touch sort of player.

OMeara was still playing on limited minutes.

Well and truely managed over the last 2 weeks, just to give him a taste

The only player to play less mins over the last 2 weeks at the hawks was Glass.

The best is still to come.

Thats probably the unknown - prior to his injury he could play inside and outside equally well. He is still good inside the query is whether the injury has robbed him of the outside game. From what I saw last night he looked pretty agile though.

Yeah, part of the excitement when we got him was that he was a mid who could play both the inside and outside game very well. It has been a long time since we've had an elite player like that. We've been spoilt on quality inside mids (S.Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, and now T.Mitchell), but there is a certain excitement that comes from a player winning his own ball and then breaking away from a contest with pace (a vision I'm sure Geelong fans haven't got sick of yet with Dangerfield). If Burgoyne didn't have his own knee issues he might have been more like that player. Right now, I'll be happy if O'Meara can get on the park regularly, because his inside game looks like it is likely still to be elite level (if you consider he's still in the early development stage when you look at his total AFL games played, could easily be one of the best 50 game players going around next year). Would still love us to find one of those elite inside/outside mids though.

It would wanna be

Didnt rate his game last night?

And that was in 3rd gear on limited mins.

Ignore #gosaintas. He's still coming to terms with the fact that his supposedly young and talented side who most pundits had finally returning to the 8 this year, has zero 2017 rising star nominations, went 0-5 in games without retiring Nick, and requires a miracle to make finals. Not being impressed with promising 50 gamers is all he has left now.

I thought he looked pretty good last night, moved well and looked sharp. Some hope for next year.

Jury still out on the trade though

Yes he looked good and not at his peak potential, will be though, hopefully the knee thing has been sorted , but time will tell. To those who ask why is Hawthorn so keen on him, ask yourselves why they were so keen on a few others like "Burgoyne" "Gibson" "Hale" senior recruits like Poppy, why were they keen on Cyril, or Ceglar from Pies ask why to a lot of questions like that.
The answer is WE RECRUIT WELL VERY BLOODY WELL!!!!!! Easy?

Yeah like you recruited Beau Dowler, Beau Muston, Mitch Thorp, Dayle Garlett all with first round picks. Every club has hits and misses and your record isnt so great its worth boasting about after your recruit plays his sixth game for the year.
