Hawthorn fans - we get it - you want him to succeed. And I personally think he will repay the faith shown in him by Hawthorn in coming years.

But at this moment, he is a bust. That's undeniable.

Meh he signed a long term deal with us and we are one year in to it, it isn't a success or a bust yet.

He is in full training and looking really good, I seriously can not understand why that isn't a reason to get excited.

You need to look at the full picture. The club said that they had finally figured out what was wrong with the knee and they took the time to make sure he was 100% fit and healthy. He finished the season with 2 strong VFL performances and 2 AFL games where he dominated in the last game. 3 months down the track and he is having a strong pre season with 0 knee soreness and seems to have finally gotten over the knee injuries. I think that is a fair enough reason for Hawks fans to be excited.

Someone doesn’t know what a bust is.

He is a bust. At the moment. A ready made player barely playing with Hawthorn parting with a lot to get him to the club.

Of course the situation could change next year but at the moment he has barely got on the park, and he's not some 18 year old project player.

Lewis Jetta was a bust in his first year with us - we parted with a contracted player for a supposed ready made top player. He's paid it off this year but if you were claiming Jetta was a bust after his first year with us I'd happily agree with you.

Hope he comes right, but any "pre season flying" story should be taken with a grain of salt. They're always pushed out by clubs for traded players, injured or those coming off a bum season to give the nuffy supporters a bit of gristle to chew for a few months.

A ready made player
He wasn't though... He came to the club with a serious injury that they thought they could fix, which from the sounds of it they have. So based on that we now have a 23 year old who is back fully fit and having a good pre season. Which brings me back to my main point of Hawthorn fans having good reason to be excited about him.

He can't be a bust if we haven't see what he was recruited for yet. That being, his prime years - ages 25-29 (2019-2023).

Just because your definition of a bust is wrong doesn’t mean that everyone needs to change theirs to fit.

O’Meara’s recruitment was never purely about 2017, but that’s besides the point.

Chris Yarran was a bust.
Tyrone Vickery was a bust.
Colin Sylvia was a bust.

None of them can play for the sides they were recruited for. They’re gone. Unretrievable. Like the skin of a balloon as it ‘busts’.

O’meara is in full training, feeling the best has for 4 years, headed towards round 1 like hundreds of other AFL players. That is not a bust.

Really hope the kid can get on the park, he's a gem of a player when he was fit and firing on all cylinders, I just have this deep down feeling he has a bit of the Mark Coughlana about him.

I hope so mate, was very disappointed in Shiels this season. Was really expecting him to take the next step with Lewis and Mitchell moving on. I have more faith in some of our younger guys kicking on with it. Cousins looks super fit and ready to go. We desperately need to be able to get Mitchell some assistance in the midfield this season.

Certainly surprised me did Shiels, I mean if you ask Abasi he is as good a player as Nathan Jones so was bizarre he struggled to get a kick with increased responsibility.

Ah yes Hawthorn are so amazing thing.

I'll wait til he plays an AFL game and smashes it, like the player Hawks paid for until I get jealous;-)
Might wanna watch his round 23 game against the dogs. Pretty impressive from a player just returning from a long term injury.

Both pretty bog average inside mids.

Not sure I’ve ever had too much expectation on Shiels, but you obviously think I have.
