Just to drag the thread a touch closer back to Jaeger and away from quotes and his missus...

Seen a few patients this week already with varying degrees of Patella Tendonopathy and each kick a noticeable hinge into the base of their ribcage/top of their lumbar spine when sitting and slouching as per the OP.

Loved this pic of JOM and Mitchell a few months back but there's a strong hint of Jaeger's spinal mechanical tendencies on display.

AFL S&C teams are great at buffering these issues clearly, but my Insta/Twitter feed is constantly full of brilliant athletes in bad stationary positions when NOT being brilliant athletes.

If the pics represent their day to day spinal mechanics we'll never see the end of the majority of back issues, soft tissue and joint problems in the AFL IMO.

Having said that JOMs looking great atm.

The when they are not being athletes part is the issue. Most people spend more time not doing the right thing than doing the right thing, most people spend more time sitting with bad posture than good.

An hour or two in the gym is not enough to overcome all the other things you do (I know the footy players spend more than an hour or two)

We slouch on couches or chairs not designed properly, we sit in ways that are comfortable and easy, doesn't do any of us favors but its what we do, athletes are no less prone to this, and by the time they get in a professional setting they've already had years to get the bad bits down pat :)

So are you saying, given the above, in your professional opinion it's just a matter of time/bit of a coin toss before he has more problems if he doesn't address these underlying concerns you've identified here?

When you say "day to day spinal mechanics" you mean posture right?

To be fair I have no inside info on the great man, he's just a good example of something seemingly really important that's not widely explored.

To your question, I wouldn't be surprised if he never has another issue with the tendon and plays out a full career at or somewhere close to his full potential. Again i can only base that on the same info everyone else has access too.

But what I can say from experience is that he may never fully close the door (if that's even possible) to it never happening again if one of the potential underlying issues hangs around.

Having said that he and the S&C team do and will do an amazing job with it. They work extremely hard.

Pretty much. Postures a bit of a funny word to be honest. Its more a out the "positions" you put your back in than anything. Traditionally sitting is by FAR the biggest threat to a healthy back with leaning and bending from a bad position close behind.

It'll sound strange but lifting isn't as big of a deal as it's made out to be - for no other reason than we might spend a he'll of a lot more time sitting than moving/lifting.

I feel for JOM then. He has a lot of lifting to do.

maybe its the curve in the natural s shape that's missing down low there

everyone does ohs at work if you work manually - keep the s shape! that bend is how not to bend 101
It's a good point. Technically there is nothing wrong with bending that way unloaded as the spine is designed to flex (maybe not with a direct hinge). Particularly if you look at dancers or gymnasts etc.

BUT if that's reflective of a position he sits in habitually then there's potential there for dysfunction if he carries that through to long flights, movies, team meetings, lifting loads etc.

I blame Bigfooty - I tend to slouch when posting
