He's 24, at what age do AFL players stop getting called young?
Well he also missed 3 years with injury, probably going to stall his development. Some people really seem to want him to be a bust. His 8th game in a row is a promising sign but he is probably tiring a bit, he missed 3 years and was always going to take time to get back to his best.

Correct

This year is as much about just playing games, getting continuity into his football, gelling with his team mates, etc, than high expectations of output

Upper body and core muscle development aside, he’s basically starting again.

Clarkson spoke about O'Mera early this year.

From memory, he said that Hawthorn just expected him to get used to the rigors of weekly footy. And all going well...that next year they would start to talk to him about testing the limits of his ability and potential.

His periods of domination this year have all come in the first quarter. But those periods have been there and commented on by opposition players.

Not making excuses. 24 is not old. He still has at least 6-8 more years of good footy left..I don’t wear rose coloured glasses like other hawks supporters. I said at the time and still believe it was a terrible decision. Especially where the list of the club was at. But the decision was made and you put your trust in Clarkson and his team.

This current hawthorn team aren’t challenging for a flag this year or next. They will make the finals this season but that’s a poor reflection on the rest of the competition. Most weeks guys like Tim Obrien, Brendan whitecross, Taylor Duryea, will Langford and James Frawley are still playing. Not many teams would have a worse bottom 5 players currently.

The next two seasons is about getting games into JOM and forming a strong duo with tom Mitchell. His good games this season have been very good. By the time he’s 26 or 27 is when a real judgement will be made. He’s either going to be one of the games best midfielders or he will be lucky to still be playing if his knee is cooked.

At least 6 to 8 years of good footy left and you don't wear rose coloured glasses?

You think he'll play to at least 32?

He could easily be a guy that retires at age 28 or so. We had Justin Longmuir retire at 26 with knee issues.

Are hawks fans still frothing over him outsprinting Jordan Lewis?
Probably more the 26 disposals, 15 contested and 2 goals that he had that day...

I've already stated this morning that I don't think he's been that bad this year, why are you lot so defensive?

You said at what stage is he going to stop getting called young, i was simply pointing out that not playing really any footy between the age of 21-24 makes him more inexperienced when compared to the average 24 year old.

i should have said "if his body holds up" and yes i know it is a big IF...Again, ill say it- i believe bringing him in was a terrible decision for what they gave up. The counter argument is- draft picks can and are often a bust..that is true, however, where hawthorn's list was and is, they need an injection of youth, not taking a massive risk on a guy that hadn't played in over two years with a dodgy knee.

feel free to correct me if i misunderstood but i heard nick riewoldt talking about o'mearas injury and it seems that it's not so much an injury as it is a condition. it sounds like his knees are just going to be in pain from now on and he has to manage his game and his training so that he doesn't put too much strain on them. From what it sounds like he can still be a pretty good contested midfielder with occasional explosiveness but we're unlikely to see the line breaking talent we saw at gold coast

Thought our entire midfield was poor yesterday, not JOM. Got absolutely smashed in the middle.

He's had some poor games. He's had some great games. Let him build and judge him how he goes next year.

"JOM is a bust... the worst trade ever"
"JOM will never play again"
"If Hawk supporters were not so boastful about JOM, then I wouldn`t care...."
"He could have been an absolute super star, but not now"
"Why are Hawks supporters so defensive"

Honestly.... I am tired of having to listen to this shit. People change the record depending upon how JOM performs each week.

Fair enough. I appreciate your honesty.

Needs a spell, I wouldn’t be taking him to Brisbane. Give him a rest (managed).

Plenty of players knocking the door down at box hill.

Like others have said next year will be the year to judge him. But I fear he’ll never be more than a solid player.

I've noticed that, he does tend to drift out after strong first halves

Last week he killed it though, he is just inconsistent

No, you didn't say inexperienced, you said young

The only thing artificial on an athlete that has never been there before... and in my opinion is the cause of so many hamstring, knee, and back issues.... IS THE BOOT HEEL...!!!!!

Its been proven!!!! That by running; 'heel - toe' is unnatural. We should run on the balls of our feet. (Go running bare foot see how you change).

Heels on you foot (from sports shoes, work shoes etc) every waking and upright moment you are awake, from the time you can walk (!) HAS TO SHORTEN CALF MUSCLES, AND ALSO AFFECTS ACHILLIES, HAMSTRINGS, KNEES, LOWER BACK!!!)

You (or I) will NEVER be given study $$$ because we may TELL the truth! How will Nike, etc sell their new fang dangled shoe if the gel heel is proven to ruin your legs???

THE ONLY THING THAT IS NOW ON AN ATHLETE THAT WAS NEVER THERE BEFORE....IS A HIGH HEEL!!!!

If you can't handle those types of comments then don't visit forums like bigfooty.

He was horrendous last night and has been average at best last few weeks...however he’s now played 8 consecutive games for the first time in years. He needs a rest. His early season form was very strong. People forget he’s still young and is still improving his match fitness. He is the least of hawthorn’s issues. Him and Mitchell will become an a-grade combo. Shouldn’t play against Brisbane next week.

You forget that he's not young.

Don’t be shy, name the others he ran past as well instead of just old man Tazz
