Or because we try to turn KP forwards into KP defenders.........

I immediately thought this might be what they're going for given that the big banner on the Herald Sun website asks whether Sheahan is the next Waite.

If the Hawks were trying to hide their interest in this kid in the hope he slides to pick 38, their cover has certainly been blown now:rolleyes:

Geelong have pick 32 and would also be looking for a young key fwd to succeed Pods.

Given their stance/reasoning on Gillies' during trade week I wouldn't be surprised if they now seriously consider this bloke - assuming he's good value at pick 32/33.

Why does the media keep acting like Waite is a good player? He's awful, really limited and really knows how to burn his team's momentum when it matters.

I don't want any players that are going to be the next Waite.

Amazing another young bloke we've never heard of suddenly becomes must have because somebody mentions them as a possibility for us in a paper. I'm guilty of it myself every year come draft time.

That being said Sheahan sounds ok from the HUN so now I'll be shattered when we dont draft him and pick up some random unknown from interstate - you know the type, the Stratton's & Popoulo's etc. Oh, hang on...

I don't think our draft selections leak like they did a couple of years ago. New personnel about the place these days. Whoever we are genuinely interested in will be known to only a very few, and certainly not the press.

A lot of people knew about our interst in Stratts long before his draft day. That was an open secret.

I think the best kept secret we have had for many years was the selection of Grimley. Apart from the Pies, who were keen, virtually no one else knew of him. Reminded me of when we selected McPharlin from no where.

The ship has been Wrighted with a new way of operating.

Totally agree LP. Waite has nowhere near enough upside to atone for his lack of discipline. And that's certainly something we can't accommodate. Pass on anything similar thanks.

Your definitely Wright mate. There is way to much at stake now, especially with the compromised draft, to be letting other teams know who we are interested in. I honestly think come draft day, the 2 boys we take, almost no one will have known we were going to take them.

Agree with all of this. It's no coincidence that the example of Grimley you tendered was one of Graham Wright's calls.

People are just speculating, and while I have no doubt that some players are on our radar, the fact of the matter is our list of priorities won't be finalised until just before the draft. And who we end up drafting will be determined by everyone who comes before us.

The only thing I'd add is that Gunston was our big play/investment this year, and that everything that comes next, given the highly compromised nature of the draft and where we have our picks, is highly speculative.

The recruiting people will have well and truly earned their money if in a couple of years we develop a player or two from this draft. Because our trade strategy this year highlights just what we think of this draft.

Fev and Lovett, but don't tell anyone :thumbsu: ;)

Get a few years into a young tall, trade, repeat.

It can be an ok way to go about things buit not with picks in the 30's for mine. Ideal for 45 - rookie picks. if you can get a rookie or late pick to perform well enough, and if they can't quite crack best 22 but you can trade them for a better pick than you used to get them it works well. Lisle is a perfect example, used pick 50, trade him for 33 from memory which allowed us to trade 24 for a player that does fit into our side. Major league baseball do this although they do have farm sides to wharehouse these players. With restricted list sizes in AFL it makes it hard and is only really of use when you have a solid list with no real glaring deficiencies, a bit like us at the moment.

This has to be a myth - The notion of a player flying under the radar of the majority of clubs, secret interest, ect.

Club recruiters would be aware of every single applicant in each draft. I highly doubt come draft day a name is going to be read out and the response from a club is going to be: Hmm, forgot to look into that kid. I probably should have done my homework better. And what's more ludicrous is the reaction of people when the media link a player and club together, as if the media has just uncovered an unknown conspiracy, and now everyone is aware of this player.

Pur-lease!

Unless Graeme Wright is wearing an "I love Jai Sheahan" T-shirt, how the hell would they know?

Can wait to get the draft done and dusted.

There's close to a 1000 guys in the draft each year. They might be aware of all of them but wouldn't know all of them well.

I'd suggest most of the other clubs' recruiters still think Grimmers is flying under the radar.

This would have been the case years ago, but the way SA football is patrolled by able recruiters, there's certainly nobody over here worth a damn that Hawthorn wouldn't know about. My guess is we would have most bases covered in recruitment. As for other clubs, I really wouldn't know, but every week you see people you haven't seen before, sitting in the members stand taking notes.

I know my SA club has been approached by several players wanting a season in Adelaide to enhance their draft prospects, so maybe other areas aren't covered as comprehensively. I remember Austinn Wonnaeamirri being recruited from Darwin. At that stage, Norwood was the only club who approached him. A year later, Melbourne pick him up, and everyone craps on about how Melbourne chose a prize recruit from Northern Territory. What a load of rubbish, he was recruited from Norwood in the SANFL.
