Can someone give the general gist of the hierarchy structure without explaining the violence?

Simple gang leaders at the top, then gang members, then those who pay protection to gangs, then people who don't want to join a gang, then those that the gangs don't want anything to do with.

What gang controls what is based on many things but the main thing is numbers, in gang fights its one in all in you don't have a choice so if you have a far larger base to draw on then you have more sway.

What's interesting is different prisons have different gang culture's sliverwater is controlled by bikies more aptly its controlled by the rebels they have the inside run there as they have the most members and of course just like everyone back a favourite when new guys come in they instantly try to go with the biggest established gangs so they always maintain that control.

where as parklea the gangs are purely racial what you were before doesn't matter if you join a gang only your skin colour matters, obviously the larger bikie gangs still exist in these prisons but there numbers are smaller. they get by with outside contacts, you don't touch them as they can have your family injured, but they don't hold any real control they just get left alone.

because of this racial gang thing control shifts much more based on the racial break down of inmates, these race gangs I've been told exist throughout the prison system but instantly breakdown outside of a prison environment.

When I was last at parklea control had just shifted from indigenous to islanders and tensions were obviously high. What struck me was how violent even the minimum security section could be.
