Jake Carlisle was officially traded into the club with the 20th trade of the 2015 Trade and FA period. St Kilda traded out draft picks 5 & 24 in return for Jake Carlisle and draft pick 14, in a three way deal with Essendon and the Sydney Swans.

Originally from Cragieburn, Jake Carlisle was originally drafted by Essendon with pick 24 in the 2009 National Draft. He went on to debut in Round 20, 2010 and played 7 games in 2011 before having a breakout year in 2012, playing 18 games in that season. He played a further 21 games in 2013, 19 in 2014 and 14 games in 2015 before succumbing to injury.

Carlisle was reported as having yelled "This club is ****ed" after a Round 19 loss to GWS and in September 2015 sought a trade out of Essendon. In October 2015 he nominated St Kilda as his preferred club of choice. Despite a bold attempt by Hawthorn to entice Jake he eventually signed with the Saints on the 21st October 2015.

The same night that Jake Carlisle signs with the Saints, A Current Affair goes to air alleging drug use by the star recruit, evidently captured on a snapchat video, and BF Saints board goes into meltdown. Jake is confronted and reprimanded by the club and his peers, he apologises for what he termed 'a very poor decision' and 'a mistake'. Jake has his contract renegotiated, volunteers to receive a strike under the AFL drug policy, and is suspended for two matches in the 2016 season. He also commits to participating in a drugs and alcohol rehabilitation program.

Jake also resumes training early with the 1st to 4th year players in a bid to start reclaiming some respect from his new club and his new team mates. Spud Frawley volunteers to take on a mentor styled role with Jake Carlisle. All recent reports suggest that aside from a few missed starts at pre-season training Jake is working hard to gain the respect of his new team mates.

Sorry Mods but I thought Jake Carlisle could really use a fresh start!

This a bit delayed but I was waiting for Jake to have his number allocated so I could get a relevant image up at the start.

I am looking forward to the 2016 season for a number of reasons. Will Bruuuuuuce duplicate or improve his 2015 efforts. Will Roo play more game time across a wing? Will Dunstan take it to the next level? Will meatball pick up where he left off? Will Billings overcome his shin splints? How far will Freemans hamstrings stretch our heart strings? So many intriguing questions that need answers.

Foremost amongst those is the question of how Jake Carlisle will fit into the Saint Kilda team. I think most of the preamble up to this point has been that Jake will spend more time in the back half as a key position defender, and we are all hoping that he can forge a strong working relationship with Fisher, Dempster and in particular Goddard and make 2016 a year that opposition teams find it hard to gain clean entries into our defensive 50. In time, it would be fantastic if Jake and Hugh could play off each other so either big man can push forward to stretch opposition defenses.

All in all, I for one am very happy with the acquisition, and on behalf of us all extend a hearty WELCOME TO JAKE CARLISLE.

Land of the Giants.

Jake occupies front spot against Hugh!
We will be sooo much harder to score against with these two. Finally some serious height in defence.
Thank you Carlton and
Thanx....... no get starfd injectors.

Unfortunate but a known risk. On the plus side (ish?) we've done this before with Saad and compared to the other clubs actually know where to start and how to go about it. I think he'll be fine, just need to keep him distracted while he's on the sidelines.

Just gonna have to wait a little longer to see him in Saints colours...

Paddy McCartin did some media shortly after putting pen to paper for his new contract, and was asked if the boys had spoken to JC since his ban was put in place. Paddys responded by saying:

"Yeah, we all sent a message to him after we found out. Obviously everyone was pretty shocked, as I think most people were. But yeah, we all sent a message to him. Obviously he's a Saints player now so we're all really behind him and we hope that he can sort of get himself through this pretty tough period. Not only him but the 33 other blokes as well. And we're really looking forward to when he gets back in November and being able to put his head down and have a crack which I'm sure he is really looking forward to."

He was also asked whether JC had any impact on the club in the short time that he was able to train at St Kilda.

"It was pretty short. He had a few things going on with his knee, which sort of forced him into rehab. But he was working really hard in rehab and all the boys could see that. So it was obviously disappointing for him to be hit with that blow, but I'm sure he'll come back bigger and better."

Paddy was also asked if losing a big recruit was a big blow to the club.

"Yeah, for us it was. But I think for the whole AFL sort of community it was. To see all those blokes get hit with that, was a pretty big punishment. We're hoping that they can all come back and play the great footy that we know all of them can. For us, having Jake at the club, we're all right behind him and really looking forward to him getting back later on in the year."

Love your work Paddy! Just remember it's one thing to talk about him, hopefully the boys get around him regularly!

A group of between 10 and 15 are weighing up whether to link with renowned sports lawyer Tony Nolan QC – former coach James Hird's initial counsel – and personal injury law barrister Gavin Coldwell, who joined Nolan on Wednesday.

Lawyer Chris Pollard, who has worked with the AFL Coaches Association and represented the Bombers' off-field staff in the initial days of the joint investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-doping Authority and the AFL, is also part of the team put together by player agent Peter Jess.

Former Bomber Nathan Lovett-Murray has signed, while Dyson Heppell, Dustin Fletcher, Jake Melksham, Mark McVeigh and Jake Carlisle are among those understood to be in serious discussions.

New recruit Jake Carlisle will not be on the field for his new club this season but Richardson points out that he will be even more valuable down the track.

“Our plan for Jake all along was long-term but of course we wanted him to play this year,” he said of the defender.

“We want him to be really strong when we’re incredibly strong and challenging so in some ways the fact that the contract starts at the end of this year it certainly doesn’t hurt us.

“It means Fisher and Dempster need to be strong again.”

Jake Carlisle to find work away from footy as he serves season-long drugs ban

BANNED Saint Jake Carlisle plans to start working in construction as St Kilda, Essendon and the AFL near agreement on contract payments for 2016.

St Kilda paid Carlisle the first three months of his new deal, until he was banned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for his involvement in his former club Essendon’s 2012 supplements program.

The Saints have called on Essendon to stump up the remainder of his contract for this season, believed to be more than $500,000.

The Saints, Essendon and the AFL have had discussions and a decision on who will pay, and how much, is expected by Friday.

Carlisle has been busying himself with weights and running during the early part of his enforced layoff and this month plans to start a work placement, possibly three to four days a week, in the construction industry.

“Jake and I have had lots of discussions about making the most of this year with the time that he’ll have available,” Carlisle’s manager Anthony McConville told the Herald Sun.

v1

“Outside of football Jake’s interest is in construction management and building so that’s an area he’ll pursue beyond football and he’s been presented with an opportunity. That’s exciting for Jake.”

McConville would not say if Carlisle would join the players expected to challenge the Court of Arbitration for Sport verdict at a Swiss court. Players must lodge documents by Wednesday.

The appeal won’t affect this season’s ban as the players have not applied for an injunction.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson said the club would cope this season without its star recruit.

“The reality is with the age of (Sean) Dempster and (Sam) Fisher, he (Carlisle) and (Hugh) Goddard were going to be, and still will be, our key defenders for many years,” Richardson said.

“It just means that we put that in park for 12 months. He’s going to be a strong part of our backline for a long time.

“He’s here for the long term. He’s a person that’s been brought to our footy club to be strong when we’re really strong and, yes, we would rather have him this year.

“The reality is we don’t and he’ll be hopefully a better person and a better player for us next season.”

Richardson did not begrudge the league’s decision to deny the Saints an experienced top-up player to replace Carlisle, and said the club was happy to have an opportunity to upgrade a rookie from its list.

“I was probably more disappointed for the other footy clubs really,” Richardson said. “That’s possibly a reflection, right at the minute, that we’re reasonably healthy and we don’t see the need (for an experienced player).

“It made sense to me that the clubs would have the opportunity to bring another player on to your list. It gives a young person an opportunity.”

Richardson said the club had not inquired about Gold Coast star Jaeger O’Meara, who is believed to be seeking a move back to Victoria in 2017, but he was open to the idea.

“We’ll look at all quality players really,” he said.

“They need to fit our group. Do they complement our group? Are they of the right age demographic?

“He’s a good player. I think every footy club would be looking at him.”

Essendon drugs saga: Banned player asked Mick Malthouse to provide training program for Bombers 34

MICK Malthouse has revealed he has been asked by a banned Bombers player to provide a training program for the Essendon 34 while they serve their doping bans.

The triple premiership coach said he had spoken to the AFL and AFL Players’ Association about whether he and his long-time fitness chief and friend David Buttifant could help the suspended players prepare for the 2017 season, according to Fairfax Media.

The players — which includes 12 current Bombers — are allowed to work out with each other but cannot train under club-devised programs.

Malthouse said he was keen to help but admitted several issues needed to be addressed, such as who would fund the program, finding appropriate training facilities, providing insurance to cover injuries and the need for a doctor.

“If the opportunity arose, I would love to help get them to September-October,” Malthouse said.

Mick Malthouse says he has been asked to provide a training program for the Essendon 34.
The Essendon 34 this week appealed their 12-month bans handed down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

It is expected to be four to six months before the appeal is heard.

The players, who did not seek an injunction on their suspensions, are not expecting to play this season even if their appeal is successful.
