Yeah, would you take him again though?

I assumed the club wasn't insane but if it came to that there's no reason why Essendon wouldnt be allowed to, it'd iust be so incredibly stupid.

Carlton ---> don't want to pay 700k
Brisbane ---> Have money to burn but don't want an unhappy player who wants to leave. (Have enough of those already)
Suns ---->Could actually be an option but I can't see Carlisle not being cranky at being on the coast
Essendon---> Yeah Nah
Saint Kilda ---> Bingo obviously.

Maybe Essendon could benefit if the lions come out and say they'd take Carlisle in a draft if it came to that? They've already done that for Dangerfield, haha.
I am sure Essendon will get something done, Dodoro is pretty easy to trade with.

You think you'd pick up a player that's just quit your club? Would be the dumbest move in the history of AFL
Actually publicly chasing a player, throwing the sink at him, securing him and then letting him go because you're cheap at the trade table would be dumber. :)

But yeah just saying the threats of PSD don't work with the Saints.

I can't see saint kilda giving up pick 5 for a player that is uncontracted and has nominated the club.

I'm getting "go home five" vibes from that sort of trade; read, Essendon get absolutely screwed. Saint Kilda's second could absolutely be what the trade ends up being.

I know people bring up the PSD a lot but this isn't looking good for Essendon. No other club could match 700K over 5 years. So the risk for Carlisle going to the PSD and not getting to the saints is actually really low.

Very shit situation for Essendon to be in, kind of know how that feels.
Its playing out very similar to the Collingwood/Luke Ball occasion.
In that case StKilda stuck to their guns, and Collingwood simply took him with pick 30 ( their second rounder at the time). In hindsight none of the other clubs wanted to touch it.
I guess in that case though, there was still some optimism that Luke could be convinced to stay rather than risk the draft.

Still, I'm disappointed that Saints came up with basically a godfather offer to trump ours…Carlisle for 500k/3 years would have been a good first step in the rebuild.

EDIT: Could be a blessing in disguise…rather spend the money building up our midfield and forward line first, then trading in KPD's if need be like Hawthorn. KPD's are always cheaper than mids and forwards.
Thats a really good comment. Talls are pretty hit or miss in the draft and slow to develop. I think If I was Carlton i'd be taking on some young longer term prospects in the draft. After a couple of years you will need to plug the holes in the list. But you don't know which holes you have yet.

KPD's are always cheaper than mids and forwards....... unless you ask an Essendon supporter.

Lets face it 700-800k x 5 years = Probably Saints highest paid player, how is that not worth their top pick? you don't pay a guy that much money and then expect to low ball Essendon on a trade.
The recruiters job is to maximise the talent on the list.
At the moment, StKilda's list strength is not influenced by the salary cap.
It is absolutely influenced by draft picks.

So your argument is a bit simplistic.

I'm cool with his decision.

Saints more desperate to get him then we were. At the current state we re at as a Club, Id rather spend the cap space he would ve taken up on getting young guns like Lennon, Tomlinson and Plowman.

JC is a good player but not worth the massive $$$ being offered. Glad we didn't get into a bidding war, as we ve been burnt in the past with that ( eg Daisy).

Good luck to all parties involved :thumbsu:

Wow common sense. How anyone can argue against this is beyond me, They argue his form and WADA as the reason why he's not worth pick 5, But the offer being made makes those reasons irrelevant and redundant.

Good move for Jake. Only Essendon's third best CHB, so gets a big pay rise plus gets to play in his best position with no competition for his spot.

Carlton supporters kidding themselves that they didn't want Carlisle.

He's going to be AA defender and would go top 5 if the draft was held now.

At least the Saints saw logic and know what they need.
