I dare say they haven't reported the whole deal there and that we'd be giving up more than just pick 5.
Essendon could potentially win big-time as a result of this trade, as it leaves them with picks 23 and 25 still in the bag and if they're able to trade them to GWS for pick 8, then they end up with 4, 8 and 10, which would be bloody huge.
There's no way they do a deal with us for pick 5 that doesn't include them packaging up at least one of 23 or 25 with Jake, so this is the way they can end up with 3 of the top 10, rather than 4, 5 and 23/25.
If they walk away from the trade period having turned Carlisle, Melksham and pick 23 into picks 8 and 10 they've done extremely well for themselves. Extremely well.
I am a bit confused as to why we'd want to have two first rounders next year and none this year though, given where we're at in the rebuild. That makes me wonder whether we might have something up our sleeves to trade that future first to GWS (who apparently will need lots more points next year) for something.
Because Dixon kicks bags of goals and actually wants to play forward (and will also pinch-hit in the ruck, which makes him dual-purpose and more valuable), whereas Carlisle only wants to play down back and as I've been saying for ages, those who play forward to a high level have greater currency than their defensive equivalents.
