I'm confused.

Essendon got Pick 17 for Ryder who is a) better and was b) contracted.

They now think they could get a top 10 pick for Carlislie?

What the **** am I missing?
Generally with players in demand they choose a club and then you’re forced to deal with them.

So depending on what that club has to offer, the deals are different. If Port’s first pick was say 8 instead of 17, I have no doubt Essendon would have got that.

It’s not as though it’s an open market and clubs are bidding. If they were, you’d get market value.

The part where GWS offered pick 4 and Port were willing to trade their 2014 and 2015 1st round picks for Ryder if trading future picks was allowed in last years trade period.

Carlisle is a proven gun CHB, tell me what chances are of getting a gun KPP with a pick in the 5-15 region? History tells us you have about a 50% chance of landing someone as good or a little bit better than Carlisle.

Ordinarily Carlisle would probably fetch a pick 8 to 12, but under the circumstances with black and uncertain clouds hanging over the Don's player's future , some will be eager to get the hell out of the place and if he were to nominate a preferred destination then anything could happen.
2rounder and fringe player or naught via the psd.
Whomever holds 1st pick is in a strong position.

Essendon will get unders for Carlisle.

If he chooses Carlton, Essendon will have to accept, say Pick 21 at best, because we have the PSD as leverage.

If he chooses a different Club, any Club, they too have Essendon over a barrel because they know EFC won't force him into the PSD to Carlton. EFC would rather cut off their left arm than let Carlton get him for nothing.

Bottom line, Carlisle will choose a Club, that Club will offer EFC unders, and Essendon will have to accept.

Absolute best scenario for EFC is something like Freo Pick 17 .

If he chooses Carlton, it will be Pick 21.

Personally, i hope he doesn't pick Carlton unless he agrees to come via PSD. Which i think is a small chance , but only a small chance.

He is a good but risky player. Big upside. But a good chance he is a wasted talent also.

He's after $700k - $750k

Essendon have baulked at that, it's significantly more than Hurley and Hooker are currently on.

Freo will pay it but he doesn't want to move away from family.

See who else comes to the party, looking like a highest bidder situation.

If we don't get him its no big deal for us.

He is offered a team to rebuild defence around.

Jamison is turning 30 and Rowe is a good solid cheap back up.

Weitering will take a year and Carlisle will be the general in defence moving forward. He will have youngsters like Docherty, Tuohy, Rice, Buckley and Weitering around him growing together. he will be nurtured to a leadership role on decent money. It will take awhile but by the time he is peaking as a footballer and person in mid-late 20s we should be ready to challenge. If he wants the challenge on decent money with opportunity to get his name on the same locker as Chris Judd, Andrew McKay, Ken Sheldon and Syd Jackson then the only way for this is through the PSD.

100% if you're st.kilda. We got Goddard at 21.

All depends on Jakes prorities.

If its $$:
Blues or Saints look the goods, but highly unlikely he will see success thoughout his remaining career.

If its finals football:
Hawks and Dogs seem to have the most immediate future for him.

If its a combination:
North and Dogs would seem the most likely destinations.

If he's willing to go PSD:
Screw him, any player who would do that to his club isn't worth having.

From a North perspective:
I'd happily use our first as a trade and have him on about 650K playing in defence only.
(That said the bloody ASADA stuff still make me baulk a bit)

Go through the PSD history then rethink your post.

Clubs in market for Carlisle dont have those picks? Port couldn't offer any more?

From what I heard, Port were willing to offer their first and second round pick for Paddy, but that hadn't been implemented. GWS offered pick 4 late....

If he nominates Saints (I'd be surprised they'd be willing to part with pick 5-6) then best case scenario would be pick #5 or #6 for Carlisle and a second rounder.

Carlton- Best case; pick for hendersen, worst PSD

Freo seem to be in the market too, and seem to have the leading offer, but jake seems set on staying in melb.

Theres no shortage of interest in him thats for sure, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few other clubs put their hand up, but in the end it will come down to who he nominates.

Amusing how every other clubs supporters who dont have the PSD option open to them are tripping over themselves to take the moral high ground .
Be honest , if the boot were on the other foot , you'd be all over the chance too use it !!

IF he chooses Carlton, I don't think he will use the PSD unless forced to by a pig stubborn EFC knocking back say Pick 21.

He will choose his Club, and EFC will accept unders ....because they have no other choice. EFC will not let him walk to the PSD and whichever club Carlisle chooses damn well knows that.

dont under-estimate how much room the saints have in the cap. we were sitting at 94% about 3 months back

minimum is 95% to hit that we are front loading a lot of kids contracts, paying retiring players big overs and also do not have anyone on the veterans list

i could see us paying carlisle easily 2-3m in year one and still only hit 95%

So you think Carlton & St.Kilda won't have any success in the next 9 years?

Not to mention the 95/105 rule. Can see the Saints making a serious play for a boom recruit this year or next - you've got a fantastic spread of kids but maybe only Billings and McCartin will command huge dollars as they mature, so it's not a big risk.

I'd be looking elsewhere though. For the money & the trade assets you'd be sacrificing, I'm not sure Carlisle is worth it.

Absolutely.

And if he chooses StKilda, it will be for say your Pick 25.....and maybe Hickey if you are feeling generous. And EFC would have to accept it, or let him walk...and they WON'T let him walk...and StKilda know that.

Agree on everything except this, Saints have one of the brightest young lists in the AFL and should be very successful in the near future.
