Jake Carlisle: now there's a guy you know will just bleed for the jumper. Lying to the club before he's even on their list.

All those saying it doesn't matter because on field he'll be a gun for the next eight years - I think you're not factoring in the people-are-people-not-robots factor. There's no doubt this damages the trust relationship between Carlisle and the rest of the team. Our players are highly invested in our club, and Jake has lied to that which they all love. I suspect he'll find it hard to make friends. Furthermore, Carlisle has a history of blaming everyone else but himself. If the other players don't like him, I can see him saying it's a problem with them, not him, and that will only add to the tension.

I'm betting he'll be gone within the next 2 years, probably traded out for nicks. He won't want to be there, and nobody else will, either.
You are making a lot of assumptions about the way people act after you just stated that they are not robots.

So in summary

  • 24 year old, not super sharp, but soon to be super rich kid has bender in vegas that includes coke.....
  • In an act of mind boggling stupidity (whilst on coke which totally distorts a persons sense on whats "funny") he films it and sends it to a mate, not knowing said mate can capture the video.
  • Said mate is a dead set c45nt to his "mate" and sells the video for $3,000 ($3 f-ing grand, probably less than Carlisle spent on that night)
  • ACA see it as a cheap story to get ratings, call manager letting them know (in thier world this is the honourable thing to do)
  • Said 24 year feels stupid and denies its him hoping he can get away with it.
  • Manager of player has a big cheque coming and commercial sense kicks in and he holds off reporting it (could it not actually be carlisle?)
  • AFLPA who represent player say, "look don't say anything just yet, lets work this out first" remember they work for the players, so they have a responsibility to Carlisle in this case.
  • Trade gets done and clubs feel like they got pushed a bit but still happy
  • Video hits the street and everyone is pissed because essentially we feel we overpaid. (we could have got him cheaper if we knew, PSD, PSD....
  • Jake comes back immediately to apologise and take his lumps, and will probably end up being significantly less of a dick head going forward.
  • No one in the media blames st kilda, all the blame is with the playter, manager and AFLPA.
TL'DR

Saints brand is fine, Carlisles' is damaged, may end up being a great thing having knocked 3 years of Dick-head out of him giving us a much better player.

Yes we could have got him cheaper if it had come out, but it didn't, we have a gun, move on.

This WILL blow over eventually. Yes it's disappointing but, like with guys like Hodge and Lake misbehaving for Hawthorn if Jake performs on the field then we will still have won the trade.

We just need to ride out the storm that was in no way our doing and let Jake's actions speak on the field. It is what successful clubs do.

we just have to hope it does not affect any current or potential sponsors.

I'm a lover, not a fighter
Lots of supposition there PS. Yes Carlisle lied, but lets hear the full context.

We have been told that the AFPLA and McConville only had a still. Considering Carlisle is so dumb he didn't know that SnapChat could be replayed, he may have thought it was just BS and said it wasn't him.

Or he could have panicked like most of us would have and denied it.

Look, I think Carlisle is a goose and an idiot and really has effed up BIG TIME, but I don't know how long the players will hold a grudge. Players aren't robots, but once they start training then, playing and then realise that Carlisle want to play with the Saints and they start WINNING, things will turn around.

Akermanis was hated, absolutely hated by his Brisbane teammates. Didn't stop them winning multiple flags. Same with Scarlett at Geelong.

Carlisle will be OK in the long run. He has a huge point to prove and a equally big debt to pay back to his new club. The leadership in our club and players will ensure that he gets a huge boot up the arse, then they will get around him, because they know he can play and will benefit the team.
I hope so, man. I really do.

Worst case scenario -

Hawks drafted Thorp & Dowler & still prospered.

I don't think Carlisle will be a bust, but it's not the end of the world if he is.

The whole saga smacks of deceitfulness.

In my opinion McConville and Carlisle's account of the timing of events is an utter fabrication designed to present a sequence of disclosures that attracts the least punishment. That the AFLPA is doing media suggesting that McConville has done the right thing makes me very angry, even more so than my initial rage at JC. The AFLPA is so heavily embedded in this scandal that for them to suggest no wrongdoing by McConville is equally prepostrous as if JC suggested it himself. It just doesn't wash. Again IMO it is hard for me to believe there was not an unofficial call from the AFLPA to the AFL. And the AFL's deafening silence only makes me suspect there probably was.

I hope the club has the capacity to rewrite Jake's contract to weight it heavily in our favour. I think that is the only way to inject a modicum of fairness back into the trade. Pick 24 for JC at $350,000 a year is a little more palatable. Let him earn the big bucks by towng the line over the next 12 months.

I also hope Finnis recognizes that this fiasco gives him some leverage with the AFL. When he's banging the negotiating table on the next issue (say for more Friday night games, or financial support for Moorabin redevelopment) I hope he reminds the AFL how weak they have been in the past on offering support to the club, and it's time to payout.

Conscise and hard hitting statement by Eddie on 3AW this morning, but a very limp wristed and soft response from McLaughlin! Is McLaughlin a paid mediator or is he the CEO of the AFL representing the 18 clubs. Grow some balls Gill, your answers were pathetic. You know the whole lot of them screwed the club and should e held accountable for it.

As far as the AFLPA is concerned I would be very concerned of where they will situated as far as future funding from the AFL is concerned!

Well said and thanks Eddie again for champioing the right cause!

I think we should stop banging on about it and trust the Club to turn it around. I'm sure we knew he was no angel and took the chance and I'm very hopeful that it will work out ok if we give him a chance.

I'm sure Gill as AFL chief would have a completely different official opinion if the Essendon and St Kilda roles in this were switched.

Why dont the players pay union fess?

AFL funds this organisation that then withholds vital information.

Disgraceful
This is a good comment. The funding arrangement for the AFLPA is absurd.

One cynically wonders if the AFLPA's advice to McConville would / could cost them 1/18 of their revenues (i.e. the entire playing group of St Kilda FC walking away), then perhaps that advice may have been a little different to 'keep it under your hat for now'.

Something else that's starting to piss be off, and that's those clubs that say they spoke with Carlisle and they rejected him on the basis of their interview. Bradshaw just said effectively that about his shithole of a club. At that point when everyone wanted him he picked us for whatever reason.
Basically he rejected them not the other way around

What did Eddie say?
Scathing on the AFLPA.

Said they were acting against the interests of the club who fund it through the AFL

They get 16 million of AFL funds and basically view clubs as the enemy.

He is in favour of the union but says if they want to act like a trade union, they should be funded by the members.

Said Saints would have had to go to all their sponsors explaining what happened when it had absolutely nothing to do with them.

Also said Carlisle had been thrown under the bus by the AFLPA telling the integrity unit that he denied the allegation (thereby taking the AFLPA and McConville off the hook). Said Carlisle would be in for a world of pain at the Saints because of it.

Really tore strips off the AFLPA for withholding the information and that it was a disgrace and that the Saints had been totally blindsided and the AFLPA had given Finnis an up yours.

Pretty strong stuff. People say we don't say enough, however Eddie has a vehicle in his morning breakfast show to voice these opinions.

Finnis and the STKFC admin have no such vehicle, but have still handled this appalling situation well in my opinion.

I agree it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Story going around that North were keen, but then they met him and realised he was a sh.t of a bloke so they dropped off.

Now maybe Jake is a sh.t of a bloke. Could well be in light of what happened. But I highly doubt he would have presented as a sh.t of a bloke at interview. Players don’t do that, particularly when they’re trying to secure a great big contract that will set them up for life. And from all reports, as expected, he presented very well to us.

Anyway, it’s one thing to say you “met with someone; did due diligence, and that you weren’t impressed.” So what? The guy could still play great football and help you win a flag.

No, what they’re basically implying is that the Saints should’ve “met with Carlisle; done due diligence, and discovered that he was a cocaine snorter who Snapchatted his habit to his mates who had recorded said Snapchat and who had shopped it around to the media and as a result A Current Affair were now going to broadcast it!”

BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

How can you say that?
Sponsors may well think twice about linking their brand to the St Kilda FC directly because of this.
They may not blame St Kilda, but prospective sponsors won't want any association with scandal.
