I've noticed that a lot of fans league wide talk about acquiring Carlisle as though Essendon aren't going to lose the WADA appeal, which could see him banned up to 2 years.

Surely the possibility of that, and the fact that it won't be resolved until AFTER the trade period makes Carlisle radioactive... Not that his form isn't doing a good enough job of that anyway.
I posted this in another thread in June... Not surprised at the eventuality here.

Adam H believes Carlisle will be the best centre half back in the league..........Sorry Adam not this year Champ!

'Caveat Emptor' = St Kilda drafting Carlisle
I noticed Adam H post something about Quinten Lynch in their Carlisle thread (which I had a read of for some schadenfreude) as though getting him as a free agent years ago is somehow comparable to the car crash that is their trade period

Hey Old Spice ...

... Sorry to tag you in twice in a day :$ ...

... What's your read on Ameet Bains recruiting Carlisle to St Kilda? Doesn't he have a legal background? Miscalculation?

(IIRC you once wrote an article about him?).
That I did. My guess is that they might have sniffed a long-term bargain and assuredly calculated a suspension into the bargain. Bains said that they weren't after older top up players and Carlisle isn't that, he's a long term prospect.

Thats fair enough that hes a long term prospect and he will be a good player for them despite all the banter. But you dont pay pick 5 for a player who is not going to be available for a year. They overpaid for him ie they didnt price in the risk well enough.

Possibly, just depends on the quality available last year at 5.

Unless he spends 2016 in Columbia which is a real possibility

Carlisle just turned 24 so missing 1 year isn't such a concern, no different than a player doing an ACL, and a risk worth taking given where their list is at development wise. During the trade period I was ambivalent about recruiting him, mainly because of his personality rather than any lack of ability, but would not have been happy to offer more than $450-500K. St Kilda will still get good service from him (assuming he doesn't get locked up in Asia on drugs charges while he's filling in his 2016).
