“He looked pretty sharp, Jake, and particularly early I thought he was good for us. It depended on how he felt in terms of playing out the full game, but he got through and that was the main thing. He’ll be discussed at team selection, but we’ll let his body cool down and see how he pulls up.”
 
I thought Jake did really well in the games he played in the second half of the season . All that hard work he did to get back early paid off . Although he lack of any preseason training did hurt him in the last few games as he struggled with his fitness . Hopefully his back troubles are behind him and he will be back to his best next year .

It’s remarkable that Jake Carlisle donned the red, white and black this season.
Back surgery to relieve pressure on a nerve sidelined the key defender for several months, but his off-field work ethic saw him make an incredible return in Round 14.
Carlisle slotted straight back in to man the key defensive posts, building his match-fitness and influence with each outing.
An unrestricted and injury-free pre-season will go a long way for the No. 2, whose sights are firmly set on a solid 2020.
BEST GAME:
Carlisle hit his strides against the Western Bulldogs, amassing 18 disposals, eight marks and seven one-percenters from 97% of game-time.
 
A great game against the Carlton forwards who had no answer to his great defending . Is building a great relationship with Howard and the other young defenders. Has really been controlling the backline . Hopefully he will end up finishing his career in a few years still at the Saints .

"Jake worked really well with Darragh and Clav. That’s probably one of the main strengths of our team, we can win the ball back and mark the ball in the air in our defensive half.

"Sometimes we’re going to lose clearances, but it’s ok because we can force the ball high up in the air and those three can mark it really well.

"Jake’s buying in and he’s good with the younger blokes. Watching the vision back and even live on the day, those three controlled everyone in the defensive end.

"We’ve got good competition for spots, so hopefully they’re all chances at some point throughout the year."

Jake Carlisle was one of Sandringham's best in its scratch match against Werribee, but not in the position he's become accustomed to during his time at the Saints.

The 29-year-old held the No. 1 ruck role across the afternoon, winning his fair share of the hit-outs and showing notable follow-up work around the clearances.

His main strength for the day was his follow-up work, that was a clear focus for him. If he wants to add the string to his bow, that follow-up is important.

A pretty reasonable return to the seniors in Rd.3 for Jake in what was an abysmal performance against Essendon by the Saints.
Jake played in his familiar CHB role but also spent large periods in the ruck and drifted fwd on occasion.
Finished with 13 disposals (going at 84%), 6 marks (3 contested), 6 intercepts, 15 hit outs, 4 clearances and kicked 2 behinds.

Not the worst on the field and should hold his spot, whether it as 2nd ruck or just his customary CHB role.
 
Great game fro the Saints with a good comeback win against Eagles.
Jake moved to a KPF / 2nd ruck this week contesting really strongly and working nicely up and down the field.
Did a larger stint in the ruck when Roma was off with an ankle and helped to nullify the effects of NicNat in the ruck including some nice taps down to Bytel and Crouch. As a forward his stats probably dont display his efforts with a lot of taps and knock downs rather than pack marks. A few very nice handballs flicked out that led to goals as well.

Finished the game with 4 kicks, 7 handballs, 1 mark, 3 tackles and 16 hitouts but also had 6 score involvements and 4 intercepts.
Unfortunately gave away 5 free kicks (a couple unlucky) which he will need to tidy up but it looks like he might have found a new position at least until Ryder is back up and firing
 
A disappointing outing from Carlisle and the entire Saints team to be honest.
Only the 9 disposals and 4 marks for Jake playing the KPF / 2nd Ruck again, although he did have 5 tackles (4 of which were inside F50)
Jake had 9 hitouts and 3 clearances but did find himself losing a hit out and couple of clearances to Marlion Pickett at one point.

Much like a number of players he will find himself under pressure to keep his spot this week either as the fwd/ruck or dropping back into a KPD post again.

Jake Carlisle is set for an extended period on the sidelines, undergoing back surgery today.

The 29-year-old has been managing ongoing lower back soreness for several weeks, with surgery expected to provide longer-lasting relief.
"We’ve been working with Jake on treatment plans, however his level of day-to-day pain and restriction of movement has gotten to a point where lumbar disc surgery is the best option," Chief Operating Officer Simon Lethlean said.


"The delicate nature of spinal injuries means it’s pretty hard to put a timeline on recovery.

"Our doctors and physios will work with Jake throughout his rehab, and we’ll monitor his progress.

"While it’s a disappointing outcome, Jake’s long-term health and overall wellbeing is paramount."

Carlisle has played four games in the 2021 season, including his 150th AFL game.

St Kilda will not offer Jake Carlisle a contract for 2022, with the 29-year-old expected to retire having played just four games this season after having back surgery in May.
The intercept marking defender played 66 games for the Saints after being traded from Essendon at the end of 2015 where he played 85 games.

He missed 2016 due to the suspension imposed on players that were at Essendon in 2012, when that club ran a supplements program, but finished fourth in the Saints best and fairest in 2017.

No send-off games for Hooker, Zaharakis, Carlisle to finish up at Saints

Essendon’s David Zaharakis has not yet retired, but sources say he is not expected to be given a new contract by the Bombers.
