Details:
Club: Melton/Western Jets
DOB: 6 January 1988 Hgt: 191cm Wgt: 78kg
Position: Forward/Defender
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
Vic Metro U16 in 2004
2005 Victorian State Screening

Statistics:
2004 TAC Cup: 5 games, 1 goal, avg 10.4 PPG, 3 times in the best
2005 TAC Cup: 18 games, 13 goals, 13.8 PPG

Background:
Still bottom age, but he has had a very good season. Having played for Vic Metro U16s in 2004 and squeezing in five Jets matches as a 16 year old, Edwards has performed consistently well as a bottom age player this season for the Jets. He probably doesn’t have the hype of other key position players in this draft, but has enough good qualities to suggest he’s draft material. He is capable of taking strong marks overhead, and has performed well in defence and up forward this season. Is the son of Alan ‘Butch’ Edwards who played for Richmond and Collingwood.

Strengths:
- Strong overhead
- Vertical Leap
- Can play either end
- Height
- Decent speed/mobility for his height

Weaknesses:
- Set shot kicking is inconsistent, needs work

Footydraft comment: Looks a promising type and is definitely worthy of being selected in this draft. He is versatile and can play at either end. At 191cm (and possibly has grown further), with an excellent vertical leap and a strong pair of hands, he looks as though he could have a bright future. In what is deemed a weak draft, I rate him as someone who would be worthy of a pick around 30, although clubs may tend to wait and take a punt with a later pick.

I do not know much about Edwards but from this description, seems a very good choice at this stage

I'm surprised how far Swallow slipped and that we passed at #36....his kicking must be atrocious, he was really talked up pre-draft

Great pedigree, both father and grandfather (Arthur Edwards) played VFL/AFL football (Arthur Edwards, member of Footscray's 1954 premiership side). What a shame Allan Edwards didn't play enough games for either Richmond or Collingwood to allow them to take him under the father/son rule. They must be disappointed.

I will be happy if he is half the player his father Allan could have potentially been. Butch's career at Richmond and C'wood was nearly ruined by knee injuries and I am thinking that he must have got very close to 100 games at the Pies but obviously not.

He played 66 games for Richmond, 35 for Collingwood & 12 for Footscray. You are right about his knee injuries, he would have played a lot more football if he hadn't suffered so badly from these injuries. Fingers crossed that Jake's knees don't go the same way.

Hope you dont mind a tiger dropping in. Am a fmily friend of the Edwards and very pleased for Jakey as is he to be a blue. Old Butch was a ripper player as you say and actually did both knees in the one incident at Collingwood, and another when slipping on the centre wicket training at Richmond when 19.Jakes older brother Duane has done one so fingers crossed it doesnt happen to Jake. Can tell you that as far as hunger, commitment and attitude goes Dennis is going to fall in love with him. He is a genuinelt tough kid with some mongrel and will step up quickly I believe.Very very fast and having watched a bit of him about the best contested mark in TAC even at 17.Captained Jets for half the year, and I firmly believe he was top10-20 next year.Murphy will obviously be a player, but I would put my house on Jakey being top value and a real favourite for Blues fans some day.Great kid, good luck Jake and Carlton.

Great to hear Rodney, and thanks for the info ..I like the kid already ;)

I like the sound of the lad.............anyone know if he'll be playing with the Blues/Bullants next year or is he going to do a Raso/Ellis?

I posted a little bit before the draft that I'd love to have this kid at 36, and well be blowed if it didn't happen.

More than half our list is now over 190cm which gives us a lot of chances of producing quality CHB's, CHF's, FB's and tall flankers.

It's a hell of a lot easier to recruit mid-fielders of quality, so the future looks quite good.

One of the best attitudes you could ask for. He literally lives the game, and will work his arse off every day of every week from now on while down with the blues. He loves everything to do with footy, and you guys will be rapted in a few years that you got this kid.

Don't like the way he talks!!! :p

LOL, just saw him on Fox Sports News talking - sounds confident! Don't like the way he kicked on his left foot either...lol

For the record he's a fourth generation footballer. Great grandfather and grandfather played for footsgray. Father played for Tiges and Collignwood.

Some good genes there methinks. And if we can get him to 100 games his sons will all play for Carlton :D

heard him talk on foxtel and he sounded very impressive, he's also got good bloodline for league footy, so all is pointing to being an excellent selection by Carlton FC.
