Where does he stand??

I hope he can raise this year as a key Forward and become and 60ish goal kicker. But I don't seem him doing that!

Thoughts???

He's got good athleticism and is a strong mark. His downside is that he's a horrible kick. Does not look natural at all when kicking at goal. I hope he can turn it around and become a good player for the blues but i'm not confident.

Still recall his nice game and couple of goals against Richmond early this season. Might have been the same night Hartlett clotheslined Howett. If he could keep that sort of effort up (Edwards not Harts) I'd be pretty content.

He was a disappointment last year. Needs to lift TWO levels to become a regular senior player or this year could, and should, be his last.

I'm not quite sure how we expect Edwards to show much when IMO we don't really give him sufficient opportunities to produce in the senior side.

Edwards wasn't given the chance to play consistently in the seniors so I fail to see how he can really make himself comfortable at the highest level.

Each game that Edwards played, he really wasn't all that bad. Granted, he didn't stand up as much as some may have expected, but he was solid in each game.

Not to mention I think we played him incorrectly. He played in the seniors as a lead up forward (ie. Brad Fisher) but I actually think he's more suited to using his pace by playing out of the goalsquare.

Odds are that he'll be on the scrapheap this time next year because if we haven't given him sufficient chances in the past I can't see that happening next season. I genuinely think he can develop into a forward that will be good for over a goal per game but there's no chance of that happening if we don't play him.

Just like Hartlett, Edwards has an opportunity to cement himself as a third forward. You would hope with one of the best fitness coaches, a solid developmental program and a midfield sure to give him ample opportunity, he will show some improvement.

I think it is down to him or Hartlett as to who gets another contract

If Hartlett shows nothin I'm sure they have a plan to reunite him his brother in Port Adelaide who also lack key forwards.

If either of them really want to succeed they will, if they aren't willing to put in the hard work then we are better off without them.

I don't see him playing, he's not tall enough to be a key forward. He is a tall pocket like Fisher who also will struggle to get a game for various reasons in '09.

He's at the front of the queue. Must show a lot this year to be here in 2010. Same goes for Hartlett. There's no room for 4 or 5 year old unrealised potential anymore.

I rate him more than Hartlett. But thats like saying I'd rather root Tootsie than Dame Edna.

Edwards isn't tall enough to be a key forward, yet he's taller than Fevola.

Flawed 'logic'?

We just need him to be that 3rd forward

1st target - Fev
2nd target - Kreuzer/Cloke/Waite/Hartlett
3rd target - Edwards/Hartlett/Cloke/Hadley/Fisher

The smalls - Betts, Houlihan, Yarran or a resting Gibbs/Murphy/Stevens/Scotland/Simpson

I wasn't advocating that we use Edwards as a tall forward. He's not suited to that role, at least not at the moment.

I was just rubbishing the claim that Edwards isn't tall enough to play as a KP forward, because it's a complete falsity.

Unless he can kick bags of goals hear and there i.e Preseason this year, then I can't see why we would have him in the side. Their's no gaining from a bloke that can only manage one or so goals in a game playing up forward.

Don't get me wrong i love Flakey Jake just as much as the next person but their are simply better options.

would love to see him do well, buttttttt just can't see it happening, unfortunately. I grew up in Melton so would love to see him do well.

My mate plaed with him for the jets and was going on about how much of a freak he is that whole year. I really hope '09 is the year he turns it around and becomes a regular.

Couldn't agree more with this, however, in defence of the MC, he wasn't exactly dominating at VFL and demanding a call up.

IMO he would be an upgrade on Fisher. Fisher may have those Gadget arms and sticky hands but Jake has him for speed, strength, defensive pressure and he can kick from beyond 35m, and he's no slouch overhead either.

In 2008 Fisher got games ahead of him based on his 2007 form but after Fish's 2008 he and Edwards will probably start much closer in 2009 to fight for that 3rd tall forward position each week.

I'd suggest that the winner of this contest will earn their place moving forward but we won't carry them both for much longer.

Hartlett has that little bit more size and length on his kick and IMO is fighting for the CHF role with Cloke, Kreuzer and Walker. For him to retain his place on the list he will have to make CHF his own over all those 3 who would otherwise still get games for their value elsewhere.

Would love to see him and Hartlett succeed. The objective is to have several capable forwards competing for a game.

I like his speed, attack and hands. Can kick a good distance. But for me, the true hallmark of a key forward is the ability to kick a goal when the team is relying on you, and the pressure is on. Fev has this ability, and for me, is the number 1 criteria for sorting premiership forwards from good servants.

This is my concern, however he is young and has further opportunity, though I fear waning.

The other issue for him, is the impact Yarran may have (assuming both Eddie and he initially play forward - before one or both possibly go midfield).

Know for a fact that he was pretty pissed off in the early part of the season with the coaching staff as they assured him he would be played for the first 5-6 games. But then they played Setanta instead of him. He was pretty pissed off and probably sulked a bit.

Dont know if he is a bad kick. Saw him against the dogs in the praccy game last season and he kicked 3-4 beautys. Looked good that day. Seemed to me during the season he either didnt get enough game time, lead to the wrong spots or they were too fev conscious.

Hopefully can get a good preseason and play most of the year. would be rapt with 30 goals from him this year. Something we need to help fev.

He's gunna battle to get into our side. Would need to lift considerable sadly. He looks a lot stronger in pics though, I wish him the best, last chance year.
