Well I'd be taking Laird over Lever.
And jay Clarke this and jay Clarke that means Melbourne is paying $750K, so $800k would be about right I'd say
Why would you compare two players who are so vastly different ? Their attributes are nothing alike.

From a MFC perspective Lever is a far greater need. At 195cm his ability to know when to leave his man and intercept mark is invaluable. Even if you don't appreciate it.

Doesn't make sense Lever would leave a premiership contending team for less than $100k per year.

Unless Lever wants to live in Melbourne, much like Scott Thompson wanted to live in Adelaide. Then it makes sense.

Lever hardly the first player to want to return to his home state.

LOL we gave David Mackay $400k like 4 years ago.
This is absolute and utter garbage.

Just like McGovern, we 'lowballed' him too. Thats why he was so offended he re-signed.

Melbourne need Laird more than Lever IMO. You have Tmac, Omac, Frost and then Hibberd as an intercept defender, isn't that his current role?.

Laird is a far better player then Neville Jetta and would replace him in an instance. Melbourne would take him first in a heartbeat and you know it, you'd just never get the chance.

Laird is fair more multi dimensional and brings rock solid consistency something the Melbourne defence could stand to have.

His numbers this year are immense for a small defender.
- 426.0 metres gained on average
- 29.5 Disposals per gain on average
- 7.5 Intercept possessions on average
- 5.6 marks on average
- 81% Disposal efficiency
- 4.8 rebound 50s on average
- 2.4 inside 50s on average
- Also an elite 1-1 defender (only conceded 19 goals last year in 19 matches)

No mate.

Hibberd is a good intercept defender, but he doesn't impact contests like Lever. None of our talls impact contests like Lever.

Hunt, Hibberd, Vince, Salem, Brayshaw, Lewis, Jetta can all play elements of Laird's game.

Jetta is a far better shut down defender than Laird. Jetta doesn't provide run, although he's improved, but his role on smalls like Wingard, Gray and Betts has been incredible these past 3 years.

You're selling Jetta as short as Lever.

You make a fair point for MFC needs which I suppose is what we're arguing about.

I just get blinded by the fact I believe Laird is an all round better defender and assume any club would opt to take the better player regardless of position.

Man watching his video today a parade is a man thats trying his best to hide he is leaving
Hide it..nah he has made it clear he is leaving. Put up multiple excuses why he would not sign a contract before the end of the season. Gets spotted speaking to rival club, gets withdrawn from his radio timeslot, leaks the crows lowballed him.and he is unhappy. Not exactly the stuff of staying IMO

Laird far better than Jetta? At playing loose and intercepting yeah, Jetta has him covered by a mile when it comes to defending a man.

The adelaide defence must be crap then as apparently a third of it is made up of unaccountable intercepting players who cant defend 1 on 1..or so say other teams supporters who know jack schitt

You know Laird started as a lock down defender.

Last year he only conceded 19 goals in 19 games.

Some players have the smarts to progress and develop in their role, others like Jetta can only go so far.

That must be why Brown has consistently taken Garlett ever since Jeffy came to Melbourne.

Brown happens to be our best small lockdown defender. If we're actually playing a team with a dangerous small forward line then Laird also plays defensively, he just happens to be able to lockdown and run off, that's what makes him such an elite player.

If you'd followed his progress throughout his career, which I doubt you have, then you would know how he's developed his game and his defensive capabilities.

You've got your Melbourne goggles on when comparing Jetta and Laird. There's no competition despite their current roles, Laird just flat out wins, hands down, no competition and there isn't one neutral out there would would opt for Jetta over Laird.
