The 10%? I made it up, but you have to think about a) How many GENUINE A-graders come from any one draft and b) what the chances are that one of them lands on pick 14. I'd suggest fairly low probability.
Because it's Friday ... I went back through every Pick 14 since 2000 ...
2016
Harry Perryman - GWS
2015
Eric Hipwood - Brisbane
2014
Jake Lever - Adelaide
2013
Cam McCarthy - GWS
2012
Aidan Corr - GWS
2011
Devon Smith - GWS
2010
Brodie Smith - Adelaide
2009
Lewis Jetta - Sydney
2008
Ayce Cordy - Bulldogs
2007
Jack Grimes - Melbourne
2006
James Sellar - Adelaide
2005
Grant Birchall - Hawthorn
2004
Angus Monfries - Essendon
2003
Fergus Watts - Adelaide
2002
Daniel Bell - Melbourne
2001
Ashley Watson - North
2000
Daniel Harris - North
Genuine A-graders is pretty difficult to judge, but historically, there is actually a bit of success at that pick. Harris, Monfries, Grimes, Jetta, Brodie Smith and Devon Smith have all played 100+, with the latter two being genuine guns, while Corr is a good solid defender, McCarthy could be a star, and Lever and Hipwood have already shown to be near certainties.

Maybe 10% was a strict measurement, but that list still shows it's a lottery at the best of times. 1st and 2nd round pick is fair.

I'm from the Paul Roos camp with draft picks. Apart from those in the top 10, they're pretty overrated. I'm more than happy to depart with 2nd round picks for players like Melksham and Hibberd and to use them as a sweetener for elite talent. The only thing that worries me about Lever are his injuries. Pretty hard to be elite when you have soft tissue problems, just ask Salem!

Have we ever had a defender stand toe to toe with Ben Brown?
Chip Frawley in 2010 was on fire, had clean sheets against Brown, Pavlich and great performances vs Buddy. We have seen him do it at Hawthorn too, truly a gifted defender

2001 national draft we picked;

No.9 - Luke Molan
No. 25 - Steven Armstrong
No. 26 - Aaron Rogers
No.55 - Brad Miller

There isn't a Wikipedia page for Molan so I don't know how many games he played. Armstrong played 43 with us then went to WC. Rogers didn't play a game. Miller played 133 frustrating games for Melbourne before joining Richmond.

Christ have mercy....

Molan played 0, he was destroyed by injury. As a Dees supporter, the less time thinking about the "superdraft" the better.

Didn't Armstrong play in a premiership with WC?

Very disappointing, particularly given the strength of the draft, but the best surely has to be 2011.

Rory Taggert, Josh Tynan, James Sellar, Jai Sheehan, Tom Couch, James Magner and Leigh Williams in the draft and rookie drafts, plus Mitch Clark traded in. Two years later, all of the above gone for a total of 62 games and the only thing we had to show for it after that was one Heretier Lumumba...

Heretier Lumumba, there's a name I am glad is behind us.

Just so many goals kicked off field during the period.

I remember it well, because it was that trade / draft period that prompted me to create an account and vent on the BigFooty forum. We got Viney for cheap and most of the rest was a disaster...

Edit: excellent; found it, solid lengthy rant to kick off my BigFooty career.

You were pretty much on the money except for Pedo and Stef Martin really ... well played.

Yeah, I was still clinging on to those handful of games Gysberts started with... have a few Carlton supporting mates, and I was absolutely giving it to them when Gysberts came in and McLean was still plodding around doing nothing.

Wrong on Martin, but so were Brisbane to be fair. He was well on the road to being delisted until the Lions had literally no one else they could throw into the ruck; then: hey presto, a ruckman appears.
