Be very surprised if the big fella plays a lot of decent AFL footy in his first 2 years. He'll need several pre-seasons to get himself really moving I reckon.
I've been thinking about how he'll go in his first couple of years, these last couple of weeks. I reckon he'll play a bit more footy than some people expect.
I stand firm by the fact that he'll eventually play midfield/utility playing anywhere, but I can see him being tied to the forward 50 a fair bit early on. Wouldn't be surprised to see him play at least half the games, probably even more. If he's playing like that, I think he'll get up to speed pretty quickly.

Then of course there is his 7-10 goal debut I predicted in the prediction thread :D.

I can just see defenders running off him and him not having the tank to apply enough, consistent forward pressure to play much in his first couple of seasons. Wouldn't concern me if that is the case though. I love the pick and think in time he will be a Rockstar.

Without being a fortune teller, it's difficult to tell :p.

He could end up getting KPD's playing on him due to his size, and he'd be quick enough to keep up with those sorts of players. He's not Markovic speed, thankfully, haha. If he ends up getting a smaller player, i'd back him in to mark it against them.
The big positive is he isn't lazy with his tackling, he's a beast at it. So it wont be through a lack of trying.

I know he still needs a bit of work, but with the majority of preseason still to go and then getting match fit throughout the NAB cup and a few VFL games you'd think before he comes into the AFL I wouldn't be surprised to see him improve his tank a lot from where it is now. Also we should be seeing some big improvement in his leg over the next 6 months and that will help a lot, as well as things we can improve such as his running gait. Should make a big difference.

So early, yet already our kids have been both summed as needing several pre-seasons to play AFL and also summed as best 22 players. Always good to have a mix! It's interesting. Thanks to his size Stringer seems like the obvious player to get a number of games, yet the club has talked about improving his gait, and the fact they want him to lose weight and seemingly get a bigger tank could see him not get many. All about where we want him to play. It will likely depend on how Williams goes both form and body wise up front. Jones and Cordy too.

I'm not convinced they really want Stringer to lose weight. IIRC Macca's comment was more in the context of being asked about needing to bulk the kids up, but with Stringer standing beside him said yeah but this giant more likely needs trimming down than bulking up. So I think in that context it was more saying Stringer is plenty big enough to play AFL now.

His skinfolds were up near the 70's and in the bottom 5% at the combine. Most AFL players would be around the 40's mark (some even lower). He has a fair bit of trimming down to do.
Yeah, he'll need to drop to about 90kg over summer. I'm expecting maybe 5 appearances in the RW&B with modest returns. Anything more would be a bonus. Let's not expect miracles from our latest draftees in 2013.

Definitely. No need to turn water into wine ... I'd settle for Guinness.
7-10 goals on debut isn't a miracle is it, Igloo?

On a more serious note, I do think we are entitled to expect a certain level of promise and excitement from our first round draftees. I'd be surprised if Stringer doesn't play a dozen games in 2013.

Just let him build his fitness first. Would not be surprised if comes last in the next Princess Park time trial.

Doesn't necessarily mean he has to loose weight to get those down though. I went from low 90's skinfolds to low 60's and only lost 2 KG's in the process. It's the toning work he would have missed when his leg was broken that he is behind on, which he has a whole AFL preseason to catch up on now.

Yup - most kids spend far too much time on the beach muscles and subsequently when they enter the AFL system tend to put on kgs in the legs before anywhere else. Stringer with his leg injuries would have been a bit behind in hitting the lower body compunds hard so he could maintain a similar weight whilst improving his skinfolds out of sight.
He does have the build to be a bit of a beast, in a few years playing like a contested verison of Goddard.

I haven't been this excited about a drafted player in a... well I don't remember how long.

Sure he has the injury concerns, and like any first year player, patience is required, so not expecting too much from the first couple of seasons. Plus, he is being mentored through his leg recovery with one of our most humble and dedicated players in Morris, couldn't think of a better role model. Although, he looks to be built more than our other draftees combined, so he's going to intimidate a lot of opponents in the future.

As an observation, it's interesting to see that as soon as he got to the club the media surrounding him that came from us is sort of already grooming him as a "franchise" player so to speak. A lot of pressure to put on a kid who hasn't even played a senior game yet, but from accounts I've read on this board and the interviews I've seen of him, he seems like he would thrive off that attention. He has a bit of arrogance and swagger about him which I like, and I think the club needs a bit of an injection of.

Anyway, whether he be molded into a bash and crash forward ala Johno Brown, a forward/mid like Pavlich, or a big utility such as Goddard, I think we have a reason for optimism with him. Looks like he could be anything, and his ceiling could be as high as anybody's in this draft.

The kid will play a fair bit of senior footy in his first year. He's physically ready and capable to play against men, and he's too good not to.

If he isn't everyone's favourite player in 18 months time I'll never post on this board again.

Big call with Dahlhaus around, dare I say it worthy of dogwatch thread, but I think the club could save money on their number purchasing as they will only need 1 number from next year for next decade, 6/9 turned around for 6/9 :)

my heart already belongs to Prudden.

To play more than the odd game Stringer needs to have enough aerobic fitness to deal with the pace in an afl game, Redpath showed last year in the vfl where he struggled with his lack of fitness that size doesn't matter if you can't run.

True, but even Skinner got games this year, and he has just about the worst endurance i've ever seen from someone playing AFL.

I would argue that that was more because Skinner needed to show something to be retained. He got games because he needed them in order to improve and it was a bit of a last roll of the dice. Made the decision himself in the end though, anyway.

I disagree. I believe he was going to be retained anyway. He got 7 or so games this year, that's more than someone would be getting if they were just getting a go to show something.

I'm in Igloo's camp, I think he'll play more games than most people think... I appreciate his lack of fitness early on and lack of speed may cause a concern or two for a while but there's a competive mongrel and arrogance in this kid and he knows how to kick a goal all of which will make him one dangerous hombre.... Oh happy days....

I saw him at the TAB last night, he is a lot leaner than I thought he was. Seeing him in the champs and VFL this year i thought he was a lot more solid, even some people were saying he was a bit overweight but I don't think thats an issue anymore. Will get around the ground nicely. Also loves a bet

Let's just hope he wasn't taking a punt on the AFL.
