Draft Profile Jake Stringer

Looks like a handy utility type player that's a long long way off from playing midfield. If he doesn't become a midfielder I think he could still make it as an undersized KPF his natural footballing ability and big body will make up for lacking the modern key forward height.

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a bit worried about Jake. I have no doubt he will make it- simply too much natural ability not to, but I don't see him hitting terrific heights with his lack of athleticism. As one who never saw him play as a 16 year old reading the reviews he sounds a totally different player. For a bloke of his size his pace and agility is a genuine concern, as is the awkward running gait. He is a lovely disposer of the footy, good in traffic and a smart footballer but has very few athletic qualities which I'd have hoped we'd see improvement in by this stage.

Fair point

I reckon he's been a bit underwhelming so far. You would have thought McCrae would struggle a bit early on while Stringer would have the immediate impact, but it's actually been the other way round. Still plenty of time for him to come good though. Toumpas (the pick before him) from my club is in a similar position.

It has only been a season and a half. Most big midfield types take time. See: Jobe Watson, Ben Cunnington, Josh P Kennedy, David Mundy etc. Check in again at age 22 or so.

I saw someone from WB talking about him in the paper the other day and they said that his leg break was so bad that if he had been at an AFL club when he did it the rehab would have been a lot more extensive and that he likely would have sat out of footy for a lot longer than he did, so I think any expectations of him hitting the ground running were far too ambitious and wishful. Check back in two years.

No, just the opposite, I'm saying we won't have a good idea of how good his career is likely to be for a couple more years, once he is hopefully fully over the break and hopefully back to full mobility, speed, etc, which he apparently has lost to a fair degree since the break.

Where does everyone see jake now??
One of my problems with Stringer is that I remember him as an underage tyro at Bendigo. He REALLY had the agility and spring then that appear missing from his game at the moment. He had the strength and the commitment.
At the moment he has struggled because of his leg. Now that the leg issue is clearing up, he MIGHT get that explosiveness back into his game. It will, however, take time.
With the, pardon, 'dog eat dog' nature of the modern game, the Dogs are going to have to be patient and they may not be able to afford to be that patient.

Overall, he hasn't managed to fulfil his potential so far. He is still going to take time. That may not be possible.

Saw him live on the weekend wow its back his leap is amazing and powered through the packs still needs 2 more pre seasons gun...

Was great in the midfield in the VFL on the weekend. 30 touches + 3 goals aint bad. No doubt he still has a long way to go but the signs I've seen from him have been enough to show me he will make it. Maybe hasn't got full mobility back and his tank isn't up to the standard required but he has shown a few times he still has his explosiveness to break out of a pack. Wouldn't write him off because he will be one of our best.
