You know some people actually believe that? 'He's checked out', what sort of professional footballer does that?
Perhaps 'he's been found out', he not 16 any more. At some stage those highlights will be redundant and people will begin to assess him on his current form. Get him at the right price, don't pay a cent more.
Many a good two year won a Golden Slipper and never went on with it. Just saying!

Except he didnt even win the golden slipper, he started like crap and came home strong for 5th or 6th.

Sorry but how does it take 50 games to show speed?
You dont magically get faster with experience.

Players look faster when they can use their pace better, after they have played more games they gain better awareness of how much time they have and when they can take the game on. Also they gain fitness from multiple pre-seasons, increased fitness allows them to have more repeat efforts and run at a higher pace for longer. Kids in their first couple seasons are usually already puffed from running into space just to get the ball. Their body also matures an 18 year old has an adult body but they don't have mature adult muscles yet to move that body at it's full potential, athletes keep getting faster until 23/24. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't make it magic.

I like the thought of Aish at the right price given his skills but as others have said I'm not sure he's what we desperately need. That video above wasn't that impressive. The other player was clearly gaining on him. He didn't look any faster than Sloane (who is admittedly not slow but we need blokes faster than him). I wouldn't be trading our first pick for him unless we got something back like a pick "downgrade" ala the Polec trade if there's a chance a speedy wingman will be there in the draft.

No give him credit where credits due.
Aish is a dual premiership winner at 16 and 17 years of age in the SANFL.
He was in a very good team who locked down their opponents with stifling defence and he contributed to those wins.

I'm hoping posters have moved past that and realise that he's now in a far more competitive environment and actually dissect his game.
A mob mentality can exist on this site and people become 'for and against' very quickly.
Looking at his game at present what constructive argument can be made for spending a high pick on him?
We have so many holes in our squad, esp KPP and we need some elite outside speed.
Aish just doesn't seem the right fit for our needs.
He hasn't done anything of late which would make a team go out and chase him. Sure he's a SA lad who may be disgruntled but there are plenty of them around.
Due to our draft sanctions we have to make every post a winner.
The AFC can't be giving away early picks what is now a player judged on potential not performance, we need sure fire improvement like a Henderson. Even Eddie Betts demonstrated he had a game and speed at this level before we sought him.

I looked back and sought out a few phantom drafts and wondered what others though of him at the time... two opposite views

A lot of posters love him and I'll defer to their judgement with the caveat at the right price.
I'm not convinced with what I'm seeing at present!

If we are this obsessed over an average player because of his surname probably best he does not come back to Adelaide and he goes to a Victorian club.
Will be in everyone's best interest

I don't know why people say don't get Aish because he's not a need.

It's hard enough to lure anyone so if someone's open to moving to Adelaide and they're better than anyone in your 22 you take them. Then you go after your needs.

Lock Aish down with a second rounder (if his form slump continues - miles more that Port paid for Polec), then use your first on Carlisle/Henderson. If it costs us Jenkins, Lyons or a pick swap later in the draft as well who cares!

He's anything but average and it has nothing to do with his surname.

I've seen enough highlights to know the talent and leadership is there.

There are plenty of guys who are premiership players at SANFL level but aren't up to scratch at AFL level.

The relevance of the team that he is in (SANFL)....well that's zero in reality.

I'm with ya. Not convinced, and everyone here seems to have delusions of grandeur about him.

I wouldnt mind having him, but the prices that some people are willing to pay...no freakin way.

Havent watched the last 3 weeks?

Sorry but watching highlights doesn't give you an indication of a player. Thats why they are highlights and not lowlights.

He was deplorable on the weekend.
Another full game for less than 10 disposals. 4 frees against and two of those were holding the ball where he virtually stood there like a statue.

If David Mackay is crap as most of you like to spout...then Aish is SANFL reserves standard.

Yep, all about cost for me. Happy to have him but on our terms. Certainly a player we should target.

I really hope we play hardball if he wants to come here... (bit of a personal interest in the matter)

I wish people would get "real" re Aish, thinking Brisbane will take a second round pick and steak knives for him is just wishful thinking, they will want a 1st round pick or a good player that suits their needs. And for the record I'm all for getting Aish IF and only IF the price is right, the reality is thus far into his career he looks like at best a good not great footballer and some of the "fapping" over him on here is way over the top. Potential is a 50/50 thing, it can go one of two ways and not always the way you expect.

Emma Quigley who many rate as the best judge of young talent in the country certainly wasn't that big with her wraps on James Aish in his draft year that's for sure ranking him 11....interesting she rated Matt Crouch at 7 too. Very interesting read, thanks for that.

I feel like I am killing bambi or something by actually not being overly enthused with Aish and thinking there are quite a few in this draft who I would take ahead of him. Aish seems universally lauded and whilst that usually does not worry me too much the sheer amount of positive feedback that comes from those who play with him does make me think I could easily be wrong about him. All the SA guys seem to rate him as the best player in their team and you regularly hear him described as a "Rolls Royce" or similar. Aish was the clear stand out of this class at under 16 level and like Rich and Darling who were in similar positions he also seemed to plateau in his draft year. It is entirely possible that like those two he could fall a bit in this draft and also like them, when he is challenged in an AFL environment, step up to the occasion and shows why he was so highly regarded.

There is definitely some class about his game but I tend to think a lot of his flaws are being overlooked. Empirically he is a slight, outside player who has trouble dealing with a tag even at under 18 level. He is not really an option either up forward or down back and through the middle he does not win his own ball. He is not as quick as he thinks he is, nor is his disposal skills as consistently fantastic as you have heard they are.

Okay in a bit more depth. Aish is not a purely outside player in that he goes to ruck contests. But he does so as a receiver rather than as a clearance winner. Occasionally a tap will fall his way and he will pick up a clearance but mostly he will sit off the pack and try and receive from the inside mids. When he gets the ball he will look classy doing not a hell of a lot. He has a nice shimmy that he uses a bit and he backs his evasiveness more than he should. He is fairly elusive but again probably not as much as he thinks he is. He can burst away from a pack and I think he gets up to speed quickly although it seems to me that his top speed is anything to write home about. I saw him run down a few times at the Champs including from Salem who has speed of a tick under 3 secs for the 20m.

Why Aish gets so much attention is that he regularly brings out a “wow” play be it a moment of skill or judgment and people remember those moments. He will weave through traffic and deliver a wonderfully waited kick across his body to a player in stride amongst a couple of opposition and your jaw will drop. In between those moments though he shoots a lot of handballs to players who are in no position to do anything with them or he kicks is long to no-one in particular. He does seem to have time when he gets the ball but I don't rate his decision making that highly. He takes a lot of first options whether they are good or bad and even when something great comes off it often is a product of a great bit of skill rather than being a sensible option to take. A lot of these are not going to come off at AFL level and it will be interesting to see if he can adapt.

Another big concern is his ability to deal with attention. There was a lot of talk about him getting a hard tag at the Champs but honestly there were plenty of times when there was no-one in his vicinity and he just did not seem to be working hard enough to get into the play. He only averaged 16 disposals per game at the Champs and was returning about the same in the SANFL in the games I saw the stats for. There were reports of him being tagged at SANFL level as well but I can't say whether that is the truth or not. He seems to have a pretty good endurance but does he have a good feel for where to run to receive on the outside or is his lack of possession a function of work rate? When he gets the ball on the outside he is a nice mover and when he has time his use of the ball is improved.

Aish had surgery on his shoulder at the end of last year to tighten it up and was slow to get into things this year and this probably did slow things a bit for him at the Champs. As Fyfe has shown shoulders can cause ongoing problems and this is something else which should be noted when assessing him. Aish needs to build up strength and bulk with him currently being only 74kgs and I worry that he will not ever really have much of either given he has been been an elite program basically since he could walk.

Aish has won just about all the honours there are to win going along. Despite only averaging 16 disposals per game he was still selected in the All Australian team and was an AIS academy player. For Norwood he was their youngest ever player when he debuted for them at 16 and he was the youngest ever premiership player when they won last year.

I had high expectations going into the Champs last year and I came away disappointed. That was similarly the case this year and I honestly am having trouble getting excited about him and seeing what the fuss is about. Sure I have seen a game or two on tape where he has looked very good but whenever I have seen him live I have come away not overly enthused. At his best I would compare him to Nick Dal Santo who like Aish started his career with a significantly outside game and who had very good skills but struggled dealing with tags. Whoever picks him up will be hoping he develops like Dal Santo did.

I suggest you watch his most current highlights.
There are 100 more desirable players right now in the AFL system. Non with an SA icon surname admittedly.. Non with an 80 plus page thread about them

I must admit I have let the SANFL taint my view here ... he does have a feel of a player that hasn't blossomed yet, and there is always the chance that he may never actually click.

Would I use a First Round pick on Aish, not at this stage. Can someone show me A highlight in the AFL that might change my mind?

If it was Aish or Carlisle for instance, surely no-one is choosing Aish? Or is he a superstar of the future that we will all scream about missing out on?

Of course they will want that. But they wont get it.

They got ZERO picks for Polec. Only slight pick upgrades.

I think Emma Quigley works for Pepsi. if you mean Emma Quayle, she had Aish picked at No. 7 in his draft year.

Emma Quayle > all other draft analysts. Massive fan.
