I know, but did you ever think they would? It was good recruitment to pick the best player and ignore all of the outside stuff ... the fact that Aish has a tight link to Adelaide doesn't mean that another club couldn't make him theirs.
if he wanted to come home to Adelaide which is what we are discussing he has 2 choices and what is being said is that it is highly unlikely he would choose port. I agree with this. I reckon his dad and uncle would disown him if he chose to go to the dark side.

what was actually so illegal about the contract? i was under the impression that the club had organised sponsorship with one of their sponsors (balfours?) to sponsor tippett as well as there being a release clause meaning he would definitely leave after 2012 which for some reason isnt allowed. the sponsorship is similar to what players like judd have been offered in the past isnt it? or am i just completely wrong and we did something much worse..

The sponsorship deal was relatively small fry (although still very clearly illegal). We're not allowed to arrange it, which we did. Sure, the Judd deal was probably arranged by Carlton as well, but they had the good sense not to keep an email trail about it, we didn't.

The real big one was us agreeing to trade Tippett for an agreed-upon "below cost value" draft pick if he chose to leave in the future. That means we were effectively agreeing to give up future draft value for the benefit of retaining his services. You're absolutely not allowed to do that, it contravenes the entire purpose of the draft system. Furthermore, since we knew we weren't allowed to do it, we then cooked up a second version of Tippett's contract that didn't include that clause so we could get it passed through the system, and then sat on our hands when we started getting questioned about it until it was no loner possible to deny it. We were rightly smacked hard for it.

The Judd deal was absolutely arranged by thr Blues. The owner of Visy was on the Blues board. The AFL approved it knowing it was arranged by them. But they then decided that it wasnt the way it should be done and said no one else can do it from now one. But they let Judd keep his gig.

Just a quick question, what makes you so sure Aish will sign again with us as you mentioned earlier?

the funny thing is that paper bags are no longer big enough to pass all the cash around at Carlton anymore, they've switched over to cardboard boxes

Yeah, this is what stinks about the Tippett deal. The whole Judd deal shows everything that's Victorian about a national competition.

Not a chance he will come back. Brisbane could almost double what we could offer him

Depends what you value and everyone's different; Premierships/money/lifestyle/integrity.
  • Would you choose 600k to play at an interstate club or 400k to play for the club you supported as a kid and live in the state where your family and friends reside?
  • Would you choose to play for your home club sitting 16th on the ladder or in a top 2 team interstate?
  • Would you prefer to be loyal to your interstate club and their players over a move home or more money?
If it was my choice I'd play for my home club on 400k because I'd be satisfied on 400k a year to play a game I love for the team I supported as a child!

Ok well ignore the bit about offering Aish more money, I stand by the rest of my post!
I still feel that he will be loyal enough to stay. You guys keep saying he is a loyal guy.
I think he is getting more comfortable around the club and is staying in a house with Mayes and Close, both who are best 22 and both who have signed on this year, they will get him to stay.
We have also drastically improved our welfare department after last seasons fiasco.
And tbh, I don't think our club wouldnt mind paying a bit extra for a players of aish's calibre to stay at the club.

The other thing to remember is he mentioned he wanted to forge his own name in the AFL. He wont be doing that if he returns to SA just 2 years into his career. He'll be just another good SA kid playing in SA like whats expected of him. If he stays at Brisbane he could be the next Simon Black. A player who resisted the urge to return home early into his football life and ended up being a well respected player in the league.

End of the day though what Aish decides to do is ultimately up to him. His life, his journey and his choice.

Aside from the last line, what an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

Yes, that's the ridiculous part, and certainly not the tripe you followed that statement up with.

Aish said in an interview after he was drafted that he was focused on making a name for himself in the AFL. Being away from SA would probably assist him in that. Or he could go to a Melbourne club I guess, where he'd get more media attention...

At the end of his career, he will be remembered for what he achieved throughout his career, not where he achieved said things. Hypothetically, if he were to return to SA, win a Brownlow, a Premiership or two, and receive All-Australian honours multiple times, I'm reasonably sure he would be widely considered as somebody who forged their own name in the AFL.
