This article on the AFL website talks about players who forced rule changes.

Yet our man James Clement wasn't mentioned as the cause for the hands in the back rule/interpretation. Ridiculous.

It was his greatest weapon and he retired not longer after it was brought in.

Particularly now that it's been removed, you'd think they'd acknowledge the player who was responsible for it being brought in. Watching Jimmy demoralise James Hird simply by holding him down was a thing of beauty prior to 2007.

Clement and Holland both came from the dockers with not much fan fare.
The dockers let both of them go for just about nothing.
Clement was not only a club leader, he was a champion footballer who could read the play, silky skills and disposal.Remeber once in the katr 90s he kicked 3 or 4 goals against us as he was a forward at the dockers. Was only about 190cm but played like Mcgovern present day.
Holland was also a great servant came as a crumming hard nut forward, who evolved in to a hard nut midfeilder who would taged the most dangerous midfeilders.could play both roles quite effectively and in the same game at times.

Umm, Fremantle's first season in the AFL was in 1995... and Clement only kicked one goal against Collingwood in his entire time at Fremantle....

HE was tried forward for a brief period in 1998 as a forward kicking 5 in consecutive weeks against WC and ESS but that was about it.

Poorly put together article; it's also missing:
  • 2011/13 - Swan - sub rule/interchange cap
  • 2009 - Maxwell - bump (link)
  • 2003 - McKee (& Primus) - shepherding an opponent at the centre bounce (link)
  • 2003 - Buckley - blood rule relaxed/not actively bleeding (link)

  • 1979 - Moore and Dempsey wrestling at the centre bounce in a PF. The line in the centre circle came in the next year.
  • 1991 - the introduction of extra time in finals after a Collingwood draw
  • 2011 - the introduction of extra time in Grand Finals after a Collingwood draw.

Collingwood are the Walter Lindrum of the AFL.

He might deserve more respect but not for that.

Besides, Silvagni and others were equally responsible for that rule change.
Silvagni was the inspiration for a movie.

Ohhhh.... no.
I think the original poster has a valid point.
McKee knew his limitations and found a way to exploit others limitations with his one trick.
The rule change killed that small advantage.

Maybe but that was the only really decent game he played in his entire career so its hard to imagine that his career went backwards because of that rule change.

Late 90s early 2000 i should say, will correct my reply.

James Clement only kicked one goal against Collingwood. Ever. It was 1998, round 10 at Vic Park. More famously Sav kicked 11 that day.

Clement did kick 3 goals for us in his first match for us against the Bulldogs in Round 3, 01. The day Rintoul stole the 3 votes from Bucks...
