Should James Hird be given a second chance at coaching an AFL club?

Not many get a second chance at senior coaching anyway if unsuccessful the first time, so I’m not sure why this guy gets a second run at it.
Would be a third run at it wouldn't it?

Out of interest, what would you have him do? He's admitted he hired and trusted the wrong people, stood down from his job, and apologised.

Not more he can do than flat out say: "Yes, we cheated, and it was deliberate" but I'm not sure that's actually the truth.

That's hardly owning up to anything. Hate to rehash this subject but just don't be surprised when others don't buy it.
A systemic injection regime that 'every' player knew somehow not to declare to the AFL when asked and a few players refused to be a part of but yet he knew nothing?

Hird thought he was a successful businessman when the reality was that David Evans and his mates were throwing him a few bones so long as he wagged his tail and let them scratch his tummy.

As soon as Hird pushed Evans under the bus his "business career" was over. Nobody in the big end of town would piss in his ear if his brain was on fire.

I've seen him at the top of Collins ... THE PARIS END!!!!!!! ... a few times of late at like 830 in a suit and looking like he's going somewhere.

Maybe he's like one of those Japanese salarymen who get sacked and just go and sit in a park for six years coz they can't tell their wives they are unemployed.

The truth is "We thought we had found a way to give the players drugs that mimicked the effects of banned substances, but were actually legal, and when our masterplan bore fruit - using the players as guinea pigs - we were going to get hella rich off the magic compound. So no, we didn't set out to del;iberately cheat, we set out to bend the rules so far that when what we were doing was discovered, they'd be changed, but haha too late".

He's had many, many chances but he chose to drag everyone through the courts for years and deny the truth.

That, if he just copped his whack early like Evans wanted to, he'd be in that good place now.

No. For one thing he still hasn't taken any responsibility for what happened.

Pretty much in a nutshell why this has festered and dragged on so long... If he showed some contrition the healing process would start and most would forgive him. The ego is a funny thing.

He was a massive fail as a coach anyway so why ask the question in the 1st place? Besides after what happened he should never be any type of coach for any afl club ever again.

Was thinking that. I can think of a dozen ex coaches who would be better. Is it the bleeding obvious?

I mean just consider this...

"Former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says if the Australian public is willing to forgive cheating cricketers David Warner and Steve Smith, then it’s about time James Hird got another chance at coaching in the AFL."

Steve Smith showed contrition (whatever value you place on the honesty of that contrition is your call) and he was mostly forgiven, Warner showed basically no contrition and was dragged through hot coals..... Silly comments from Sheedy not understanding the nuance of the situation in which Hird constantly shirks blame and places it on others is the sole reason that people still dont like Hird and will not accept him receiving another chance.

If Hird wants a chance, he needs to take the first step.

Ummm- because Dank is not the type of character to clearly articulate the nature and provenance of supplements he dispenses, which Hirdy didn’t pick up on.

if only the club doctor had tried to warn him

Bomber Thompson imo is the one who should take full responsibility it was him who brought the Weapon and his mate Dank to the club.

As for Hird he’s apologised multiple times for what happened.

Like Sheedy said how many times does the bloke have to say sorry?

I'm intrigued- what exactly is the first step you want him take ??

Just once sincerely, and an apology to the players and the public for wasting AFL money on a failed defence. And his wife should apologise for her role in the court stuff.

I’m not sure why he would want to either, why put yourself through that can of worms again?

maybe like most footballers, they really don't have any qualifications so rather than doing a regular job, paying $1000 - $1500 per week, why not try the only thing you succeeded in and earn anywhere between $200,000 - $1,000,000 just for trying to coach?

Not sure if getting back in to the AFL enviroment is the best thing for him after his mental health struggles.

IMO he probably needs to do a few things
1: Tell the truth that he promised all that time ago.
2: Go and do some proper work in the lower leagues such as the VFL or WAFL and prove that you are interested in getting back involved at an AFL club. Getting a gig just becuase your name is James Hird like it did at Essendon was a recipe for disaster last time.
3: Tell Sheeds to shut up, its not the first time he has come out with this stuff and he is embarrassing himself.

He actually did apologise publicly twice.

1. During his press conference when he resigned as coach was actually crying.
2. When he did his television interview.

Also apologised to the players, their families etc privately.

What else more does he need to do?

He needs to properly detail his role in the drug injecting and admit he went to court for pride/ego reasons .The ridiculous protracted court stuff dragged the players through years more of unnecessary stress. He should also apologise to Andrew Demitrou for trying to besmirch his good name and blame the drugs saga on the AFL which Hird tried to do.

You can say a lot about James Hird, but he never could be accused of being a typical knuckle dragging footballer.

The damage to his reputation is the type that would affect him everywhere, not just the AFL. Maybe if he moved offshore he would escape it, but that is it.
