Coach James Hird - is it time to give him a second chance at coaching an AFL club? Gil says yes!

Should James Hird be given a second chance at coaching an AFL club?

I quite liked Hird when he was On the Couch thought he was quite a thoughtful and composed character. It blows my mind that he presided over a club sanctioned systemic doping regime with illegal substances...there's no coming back form that without viewing every other sanctioned regime as forgivable. Dumbest thing ever to happen in footy really.

I know it’s common to get very sanctimonious on this topic but without engaging in hyperbole there are two simple reasons why he probably won’t:

1) His first stint as coach wasn’t that impressive
2) His complete lack of contrition over the whole situation was unedifying and has probably damaged his reputation more than supplements saga itself.

Then again, if Wayne Carey can come back after all of the s**t he’s done by only giving half apologies and excuses, there’s hope for old Jim-Bob yet. Never underestimate the unlimited free passes doled out in the AFL industry.

Just think of the montage ch7 will put together, complete with the voice over guy who does all the game day stuff for the grand final and ANZAC medals mentions, Knowing ch7 they'd probably use the last post and actual WW1 footage.

Yaco, Bunk, AndrewB and the rest of the PED apologists will need to double their yearly Kleenex budget

Edit: edited to add Milanista to the list of PED apologists who will need to double their yearly Kleenex budget

That's amazing. needs to happen.

Voss? Second chance.
Buckley? Likely to get second chance.
Hird? If Voss has a second chance and Buckley has been talked about being more than likely to get a second chance... it's very possible Hird gets a second chance too!

Bit of a difference to being a s**t coach compared to a drug pushing cheat wouldn't you say?

Oh, and he was a pretty s**t coach too who achieved nothing worth writing about in terms of results.

Even if you don't think Essendon were ever technically proven to be using PEDs, Hird oversaw a program that was at the very least incredibly negligent in it's administration and record keeping, and disregarded the health and safety of the players he was responsible for. Those players will never know some of the s**t that was put into their bodies by people they trusted. That alone should be more than enough to prevent any club from ever looking at Hird in any senior role ever again.

Didn’t he already do some work for Freo in an opposition scouting role? So the idea he is barred from working in the AFL is wrong.

He’s never going to coach again though because he’s been out of the industry for so long so I don’t really see the point of bumping this thread.
