Magpie greg, Kevin sooky, and anyone else that follows the pies,

See if buckley was willing to make the sacrifice to help your club retain players of talent and skill, Oh thats right you only have about five players worthy of being called talented or skillful, and no sav rocca isn't one of them

Total hogwash.
Golden boy is taking a reduced payment for the next TWO seasons, while they wait for him to be included in the vetrans list, check the story in the Age
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/20000713/A6079-2000Jul13.html

He will get the increased (ie real contract) money when that comes into effect as the vetrans (some parts thereof) contract is outside of the salary cap. Also how much is he taking out of the marketing side of the payments that all clubs are allowed?

Clever publicity by the Dons I admit, but total and utter fabrication.

The spin doctors at windy hill should be congratulated for such a delightful deception.

Grendel, you cynic you. Even if he is going to be put on the veteren's list at a later stage he could still have insited on NOT taking a pay cut now which would have increased/maintained the salary cap pressure on the club.

See you Saturday night!

Grendel, to be put on the veterans you must be 30 or have been at the club for 10 years james hird has not been either yet as he is 26 and joined the list at the bombers at 19 years old, I read the real footy article obviously you did not.

and for Essendon's next trick, Santa Claus will come out of retirement for a gala performance with his old pals The Tooth Fairy and the boogy man.

I hope all this spin makes Hird dizzy, we're gonna need all the help we can get on Saturday!

BTW, donsRtops, did you hear? Essendon have just announced that they've taken gullible, credulous, and just plain stupid out of the dictionary!

Dons_R while you may have read the AGE you obviously didnt read my post. BTW I was the one who put the link in there so I assume I read it.

quote from the Aged article

'It is believed that Hird's new deal is worth more than $4million with personal increases tied to percentages of future salary caps - increases that are expected to grow significantly on the back of a boom in television rights revenue beyond 2001.'

Hird was first listed in 92 so in 2 seasons (2002) he will be a veteran. Have a look at what I wrote. Thats when the pay packet he is supposedly foregoing now will come into effect. As i said, they are WAITING for it to come into effect. Good luck to Hird, damn near worht the money to he is (actually NO footballer is worth more than $200,000 a season but im digressing) its a spin of greatest kind. Makes everyone look like they are doing the right thing "By the club".
I actually admire the gall they have that they can pull it off!

any bombers know of a good pub to meet at near Colonical?

i thought the veterens list was introduced in order to give long serving players the benifits they deserve
so whats wrong if hird does get more money in 2002
half of it fits into the salary cap and he will deserve every single dollar he gets
the guy is a true champion and yesterday he put the clubs imediate future ahead of his own and his families
i dont think carey would ever take a pay cut
neither would most other players in the comp
what ever hirdy does someone always finds a way to have a go at
the guy is the greatest team player in the game
go and watch him play tomorrow night
and you'll all see exactly how good he is

Of course he took a pay cut. To make up for ripping Essendon off for the previous two years being paid top money for pissfarting around.

As for Buckley, he could have gone to Port Aelaide for more money but he didnt. So put that in you bazooka and blow it out of your head.

Wayne Carey doesnt need to take a pay cut, he has played in Finals for the last 6 years and given more to his club than James Hird has in that time two premierships in fact captained histeam to both of them and has played more in one year than Hird has in the last three, do you really think that at this time of the year the essendon football club are going to announce that they have done a multi million dollar deal with Hird when it is the rest of the team that has got them where they are today, get real. Everyone is saying that is loyalty well i know he was not in control of his injuries but just getting the football and kicking is isnt enough these days you have to be physically tough enough to get through the 22 games or there abouts that is what you get paid for. Dont compare Carey with Hird there is no comparison and before you give me all the smart answers read what i said carefully there is no arguement.

James Hird is not 26, have a look at the AFL site. He is just saying he is younger. Check your facts. Have to agree with Grendel on this one and another masterstroke by the Bombers but most ppl see straight through it. Just like Hird declaring his salary.

Now before all you Essendon fans start to give me any curry, think about this with reason. Given the amount of serious injuries that Hirdy has had over the past couple of years, would you agree that his best football is most likely behind him. Therefore why would Essendon give him this huge contract, when in fact the money could be used to keep some of the younger players who have exciting futures ahead of them.

ok something for all you non-essendon supporters who see essendon play once or twice a year when there own team is losing to essendon
watch tonights game and you will see the way hird not only puts his body on the line time and time again
uses the ball to perfection
brings other players into the game with his great disposal leadership and endeavor
and the way he inspires everyone who watches him
then tell me he isnt worth every dollar he gets and more
and that you wouldnt want him playing at your own club
and that he did something that was in the best interest of the club by taking a pay cut
true champion and one of the all time great players and club men

Look at the post, I never said he wasnt worth the money, its just he ISNT getting a pay cut. He will actually be on more with less players on the list he will get a greater percentage when the new rights (in two seasons) come into effect. Yea I agree he is worth every cent, bloody great footballer, but that wasnt what the argument was about.

Well said Grendel. These Essendon supporters see conspiracy in every post.
Hird in my opinion is the best player going around and is well worth whatever they pay him. Has he received a pay cut? According to the tax man probably yes. In reality I doubt it.

I had a conversation with my uncle (yeah we're all mad Bombers) last year and we agreed Hird should do as "Neon" Deion Sanders did in '94 for the San Fran. 49ers. Sanders played for peanuts (aprox.$200,000) as far as a star player in the NFL is concerned for the year, with a Superbowl ring and a huge pay increase the next year as bait.

I acctually posted this possibility on "Bombertalk" last year, not as drastic as Sanders cut but say 50-60%. Alot of people dissagreed but alot were with me too. There were alot of good points to the contrary saying (thanks Dutchy) that the Dons owed Hird for the marathons he used to run playing in every position that was in trouble pre '97.

Whatever way you look at it Hird has reconfirmed the fact that he is top 3 in the league, with his great season this year (another lazy 30 possy's Sat. night), will remain a superstar for the next say 3 yrs, he is a great Captain both on and off the field and might be holding up the cup on September 2 for the undefeated Premiers.

For the guy to take a pay cut, even if it's just for two years, is comendable. Not sainthood material for sure but it's going to help the club alot in the Salary cap battle. So thanks for doing the right thing Hirdy.

BOMBER BLITZ IN 2000!

If you guys really believe that Hird will be receiving LESS money you must all be crackers. Sure, for the Salary Cap, he may be seen to be getting less, but you can bet your bottom dollar (no pun intended) that he will be taking home just as much as he is now. There are ways and means.
