With Kelly struggling to break back in Geelong's midfield could he potentially be trade bait? Would pick 18 be a fair swap? I think we can certainly do with another established midfielder and Kelly would be a great fit! Thoughts??

i do not think so.

Geelong have already re-built, so y would they want draft picks. the only reason we would trade him would be to get an established player.

i actually was thinking of this just the other day. i rekon he could be a very good player for our club. if we want to push for a premiership in the next 3-4 years we cant win it with just 20-21 yr olds(17, 18 yr olds now). he would be very good and is about 21 years old now(could be wrong). i would take him for either picks 18 or 20 (depending on whatt we get) if he was available. seems to be a tad out of favour and a player who got the axe because of geelongs bad form. could be anything really as a player and if anyone saw his form last year and the one before he has talent. i would welcome him to our club if he decided to come to the mighty blues

He would be a good addition to Carlton but I would be reluctant to give up Pick 18 or 20 in such a deep draft. Would be more than happy however to pick him up in the PSD.

We must avoid trading our picks now.

We must go to the draft, and build our own team from here on in.

If we finish second last, use pick 2 and then whatever it is we get 18 and 20 or whatever and bring in three of our own kids, who can develop together.

Keep the picks and get someone young who hasn't yet established their game yet or played alot of footy.

Kelly hasn't done much this year but I would consider a straight swap of Stevens for the kid. :)

Do you think our sponsors would be pleased if we recruited this bloke? :p :D

Assuming the ladder stays as is, what about a trade of say, our first-round draft pick for Kelly and Geelong's first-round pick.

ie: pick 2 for Kelly and pick 7.

If all accounts of this draft are correct, there should be a top-quality player available with pick 7; this trade would enable us to get a decent midfielder as well, significantly boosting our depth (which is our biggest concern).

From the point of view of our team, and based on current mock drafts etc, it would mean for us:

- a downgrade from, say, Hansen to Leuenberger.
- an upgrade from Sporn to Kelly

For us, the upgrade in that trade far, far outweighs the downgrade, especially considering the downgrade is based largely on potential, which is pretty tough to judge in young key position prospects. I'd take that trade in a second...

For Geelong, it would give them every chance to get the genuine star they need, as opposed to another good but not great player, because they will be able to pick the player (bar 1) that they want the most out of the draft. I reckon its a win-win situation

Trolls!

They're getting the player they want the most out of the draft for a third round selection! ;)

We should be going after someone like Rischetelli from Brisbane rather than another soft midfielder like Kelly, Rischetelli is a great tackler and is a good size which we need in our midfield and he gets plenty of his own ball. We need to go hard after this kid as others will be.:thumbsu:

1.
no way for draft pick within the first 2 rounds.
2.
even from the 3rd round on would need some real thought.
3.
reckon we could do better, need a 'hard nut' - wouldn't Byron have been perfect for us, some steel down back. Lucky Melbourne!

I would love Kelly at Carlton. If anyone has ever watched him he is a tough nut and lays alot of tackles. I think he needs a change of scenary, and could definately trive with more game time in a new team. I would definately be happy trading pick 18 for either him or someone like corey enright (remember we will probably have pick 18 and 19).

Pick 36 for me, much prefer to pick up another gun midfielder who we can develop (and I use that word very loosely until Pagan is in charge ;))

Someone on the draft board wants Brad Fisher plus pick 20 for him

Brad Fisher will be a much better player than Kelly for carlton. Lets hope if we do grab him he doesn't become another wash up as we have had a fair share of draft duds.

Kelly is not a fast, line breaking midfielder, therefore, no top 20 pick for him.
Fisher should also be a no go zone. He along with Kennedy, Waite & Fevola are our future "premiership" forward line.

The main feel is that we need to pick up young fellas and we should do so in this deep draft.I dont think weve done all that well with recycled players so why give away anything for a player who cant get a spot where he is now.Where not exactly in a position to bring him over and help him develop further with help from our senior players.Surrey Blue mentioned he is not a fast line breaking midfielder so I dont see the attraction. What was that about giving up Fisher? I dont think so.

Kelly is struggling in the VFL and people wanna give up pick 2!!!
WTF!!!

Carlton should not even contemplate trading their picks inside the 4th round unless some extraordinary, unbelievable, outrageous offer is made to us (i.e Sporn and our 3rd round pick for a 2nd round pick!!! ) Yep that's how outrageous it needs to be

Spot on, couldn't have summed up any better myself.

We need line breaking running players prepared to run & bounce.

You stole that idea from crazy Kevin Sheedy, forget about it. James Kelly is not worth it.

Gee whiz so everytime a player is dropped to the VFL, he is considered trade bait ??
Besides I'd rather we shopped around for a reliable key defender and ruckman.

every year, the expression is smartarsed. Last year he went the sleazy sideways glance, 2004 he leaned back and had his mouth open like he was laughing. before that he let his hair do the talking, all sideshow bob style.
