James McDonald Vs Jobe Watson

All bias aside I think McDonald has more runs on the board, but I expect Watson to surpass him by the time his career is finished.

McDonald had got every bit of talent out of his body and has been an All-Australian midfielder in the past. One could argue that some average players have had outstanding seasons, however the midfield is the hardest place to gain a spot.

Whereas Watson strikes me as a player who should be a duel All-Australian player, but has never had the honour.

Watson has age on his side but right now McDonald is a better captain. Such a difference in age that it's not really a fair comparison though

Weird comparison. Watson will surpass Mcdonald comfortably by the end of his career you would think. Mcdonald has had a fantastic career for a rookie lister though. Played the most games of any player drafted via the rookie list, captained his club and made All Australian. Pretty damn good career right there. Watson should make All Australian multiple times by the end of his career, and is a more talented player.

Watson is the better player.

But i do think Mcdonald is very underated he hasnt got a lot of talent he has just worked his butt of for his whole career.

and winning 2 B&F and making a AA team is a great effort. There are a lot of talented players who havent delivered in the AFL that could take a look how he goes about it.

Junior has is criminally under-rated.

AA, dual BnF winner.....but gets no exposure at Melbourne.

And his great year in 2010 is being overlooked due to hype associated with the young kids.....even tho Junior is dominating games and would be leading the BnF again right now.

Jobe has plenty to do to match Junior's career.

Who is James McDonald?

They guy who captained my mob which smashed your mob by 50 points tonight ;)

He also kicked a sealing goal in the fourth.

Jobe is a good middle-aged player and had a bit to do to catch McDonald. I reckon they'll have similar stories to tell when their careers are done but Watson will be better known largely because of his name. To have a career as good as McDonald's though is not bad at all.

McDonald has developed some consistency late in his career and developed into a decent player - but over his career 17 possessions a game for a midfielder is well below par. Did he play a large part of his early career elsewhere??

He spent a big chunk of his career playing as a tagger. During our more successful years early-mid decade he was generally tagging while Johnstone, Yze, Woewodin, Leoncelli, Bruce, Green etc all played the attacking roles through the midfield. He also spent time playing as a small defender in patches.

Junior isnt the most talented player, but he works his ass off and leads those around him with his hunger and determination. It's a credit to his fantastic work ethic that he's come from the rookie list to being a dual B&F winner, All Australian, and captain. He's now 34 and still playing good consistent footy, and may well go another year!
