I think this one will go late into the trade period but not because of any angst between the clubs but we need to see what happens with pick swaps and other trades.

Reid mentioned a third club could be involved so we need to wait for a few other things to happen first.

Culture not great at Orange team by the looks.
They struggle with not being in a football heartland, and having to draft people from outside it.
The go home factor is a thing. The Vic bias is palpable - not much media around this stuff because it's all about how wronged the VAFL is.

But good god, they are good at recycling players for first round picks. Very smart, they will never be low on the table while doing that.

They turned Alex Carey into a Test cricketer so it's not all bad.

Honestly do we need to drop to the level of bagging GWS and its local area.

don't we remember what it was like getting that shit from Carlton fans (etc etc)

Get the trade done AFC. Perhaps get Toby Green while you are there.
GWS and GC have been great for the game and for growth

And GWS have been highly successful and are so close to having a 🏆 by now

Agree give respect etc

Having said that he’s a 2nd round pick value in trade , should be fairly obvious . Especially since a 2nd round pick attached to us shouldn’t be a late 2nd

Essendon?

If Stringer heading to GWS.

Okay so looking at what value James Peatling would have in a trade, I went looking for past trades with the following criteria.
  1. Approximately 4 years in the system
  2. Not fully cemented in the side throughout the year but improving
  3. Around 40 to 50 total games
And found the following

Liam Henry - future 2nd + swap of future 4ths
Dylan Stephens - pick 25 upgraded to pick 19 + pick 44
Bobby Hill - future 2nd + minor pick downgrade
Hugh Greenwood - future 3rd + future 4th
Tom Bell - pick 21 + pick 41 downgraded to pick 60

Related trades but not quite the same

Jordan Clark (three years in system) - pick 22 + future 4th upgraded to future 3rd
Alex Witherden (fell out of favor, four years in system) - pick 58 + future 3rd
Patrick Lipinski (five years in system) - pick 43
Jack Higgins (three years in system) - pick 21 upgraded to pick 17 + future 2nd
Adam Saad (to Essendon, three years in system) - future 2nd
Callum Ah Chee (fell out of favor, four years in system) - future 2nd + future 4th
Alex Keath (30 games) - future 2nd + swap of 3rds
Jarryd Lyons (six years in system) - pick 43
Jaidyn Stephenson (three years in system) - pick 26 + pick 39 upgraded to pick 33
Curtly Hampton (fell out of favor, five years in system) - future 2nd
Troy Menzel (three years in system) - pick 28
Paul Seedsman (five years in system) - pick 32
Stewart Crameri (more best 22) - pick 26
Izak Rankine (more best 22) - pick 5

Verdict: Based on this I would say that trading our future 2nd round pick with no other pick swaps is fair value

Don't know what those GWS posters are smoking thinking his value would involve a first round pick

I would say its a bit biased after all the players who have left. Probably trying to recoup some stars via the draft

I reckon we end up swapping thirds with them also to (likely) give GWS a bit more of a kicker

Could easily have gotten Melbourne’s F3 in the ANB deal, which would have provided plenty of kicker we now need. Eating into next year’s picks is a mistake as we will have a handful of players to replace.

TBH getting a quick mid like Peatling for a F2, it really makes me happy we didn't land Luko, who by early indications, will cost a F1 and substantially more money for a position we need substantially less.

Kind of makes me wonder if we were playing Luko chicken the entire time, getting Port to drive up the offer.

It also means we can develop Curtin in that role.

I think we are really keen on getting Luko in but it was a year earlier than we anticipated with his contract, I think they would have been planning a big offer to him next year when Tex retires and there’s a clear role for him in the side.

Hardwick pushing him out so soon, coupled with the state of Ports forward line probably made it too difficult for us to get him into our side.

The nuffies will suggest we can get something back in the Peatling deal but that’s just stupid as we could do both.

GWS's loose change picks in this draft is all we would be going for IMO. No value for GWS but useful points for Welsh

For me our current pick 45 in a draft which clubs rate the depth is to high for points for Welsh or as a Rookie upgrade. I still think we will try to move that into next year and get some later picks for Welsh or Keane.

That may even happen post trade week.

I can’t believe you think GC and GWS have been good for the game. GC are an absolute joke that show the AFL cares more about TV rights and on one upping the NRL than actually running a fair and representative top tier competition.

Tasmania and NT are true AFL heartland states and any true national competition would have had them represented well before bringing in cynical and manufactured teams in rugby dominant areas.

They have been sensational for afl growth

Hard to see from an Adelaide bubble but we see it in northern states

Queensland has far more afl participants in amateur and junior leagues than SA these days and it’s not close

The 2025 afl mens draft might have 4-5 Queenslanders taken in 1st round and up to 3-4 from NSW - basically half the 1st round of the draft

The allies will continue to be competitive and win U18 nationals at times

Eventually QLD in particular might be able to have a standalone team in the national U18s as I think it’s getting close to them being better than SA consistently

And we haven’t even mentioned womens AFL at grassroots where NSW / QLD is flying

If you don’t think that’s good for the game it’s a narrow minded view

It’s a direct correlation to the suns and giants coming into the league and their work with academies etc , also helps amateur participation rate

GC and GWS are about the future population booms of their respective areas and creating grass roots development and support.

They will grow rapidly as clubs in about 10 years time IMO.
You're naive if you think particularly Gold Coast AFL has been a waste of time.

As an example Look at the 2023 draft and how GC producing 4 players in the top 25

Certainly not by chance and impossible without the GC suns and afl investment

I remember Buckley saying earlier this year that GC have eight full timers running their academy, plus another couple of part time staffers, with Rhys Shaw running the show.

The AFL has also injected heaps of dollars into facilities up there. Meanwhile SA and WA are being left to turn into "rust belt" states for football development.

Sure, but the SANFL should be kicking and screaming in the media to change that.
They haven't.

I'm not bagging the area, I'm saying it's strong Rugby League heartland and I don't believe AFL will ever get much traction there. I believe quite strongly the many millions being poured into the GWS each year would be much better spent on community football in traditional Aussie Rules states.

They haven't.
Or the SANFL don't see developing AFL talent as their core role?

They are more proud of being the "second best comp in Australia ", and ignoring how NSW and QLD have gone past them in developing AFL talent.

SA has been a backwater for sport in general since Port won the flag in 04.
