Burgoyne was a victim of his unparalleled ability to play anywhere. He played forward, back and everywhere in between. But never long enough in any one position. Definitely should have made the interchange in multiple years as a utility selection.

Now all the sudden being a utility is valued to AA selectors.

Come on down Blicavs. Couldn't help but squeeze another Cat in.

This article does a really excellent job of breaking down statistically what a joke of a decision this was.

Great read 👌
He truly was leagues ahead of the rest of the key defenders in the league for overall performance no matter which way you slice it.

All I'm saying is that if the AA selection team could have got away with selecting a specialist medium forward with red hair who averages 3 touches in finals the Cats would have had at least one more selection 🤪

I am sure it was intensive, but it is intents and purposes. BTW, what a flogstradramus Gillian is!
It's actually "for all intents, constructions, and purposes" but people at some point forgot about building.

You guys will understand the folly of your ways once you see the mighty Mark Blicavs fumble his way to 10 touches in a prelim final loss 😤😤

This has changed everything for me. An All Australian selection used to be a reference point I would use above most others when valuing a players worth or career.

In one horrendous snub (with the Moore exclusion from the squad also playing a part) I've completely wiped the significance from my mind.

I quite literally will never take it seriously again and give no weight to a players selection in the side.

Even Hawks players.

I’m still pissed about this snub.
  • The most elite with and without the ball.
  • Highest coaches votes of any defender.
  • Was super unlucky to miss out when he was injured so a chance for him to make up for that.
  • Didn't have the support around him in terms of midfield and other key position players that other clubs do but still had a standout season.
  • Didn't even find room for him on the bench.
  • Saad is winning an All Australian before Sicily....

Hearing Healy try to justify it was shocking. "If you were to go off champion data only he'd have gotten in". Apparently they looked at 'other measures' ... I just couldn't understand what they were....

Just remember, it's the same people who select the rising star

Did anyone catch Cornes’ justification?

Basically along the lines of, “Sicilys only role in defence is playing one on one on big forwards, and he was competing with Steven May for that role who we thought had the better year”.

Insane.

ITs pretty pointless now. ITs a contest of media personality wills instead of an acknowledgement for a great season.

Love Silk and while he had some amazingly brilliant moments and games I’d suggest he never put an entire season together that was as worthy of AA for us as Sicily did this year.
Was literally about to post the same thing. We all agree Burgers was an absolute gun and was a brilliant player for us. However, he was never left to basically carry a team and dominate like Sic has.

Not because he couldn't. But because we had a ridiculous team at the time and he didn't need to.

Sic missed so they could get Stewart in.

The guy missed a 5th of the season , normally thats a line through your name for selection .
And he had a very good year but not the 10/10 you need missing that many games.
And would have been the very justification they used for keeping Sicily out had he played 16-18 games.

Someone else said this and I agree, I generally don't care about our players making AA but I do care that it's ******* with Sic' legacy as a player. He's been arguably unlucky to miss AA for a couple of years now through missing just too many games, and now this year he wasn't just unlucky to miss - and no one could give a justification as to why he did.

Cornes' bullshit about him competing with May for spots might fly if they actually picked for position in the AA team, but years of completely ignoring the wings and forward flanks as a position make that justification laughable.
