Hopefully this also causes the doubters to realize that he made quite a good fist of his 9 games this year. Some had been calling for him to be dropped every week for the last 6. The boy was good!

I'll second this SS. The only positive for Strauss is that he has shown more than enough to suggest he has a future with the club and his career won't be in jeopardy.

Loved the backline players who made the effort to see him as he went off the ground too. Best of luck to the kid in his recovery.

Injuries like this always put careers in jeopardy

Reminded me alot of Jason Snell's ankle fracture v you guys back in 2001.

Jump, land, get multiple leg fractures.

Best of luck to the lad on his comeback, hate seeing an injury like that, especially to a young guy.

I was there for that one too and it looked more sickening.

Weird injury, very weird. Just jumped up and landed. How you can snap 2 bones in your leg like that is anyone's guess. Sickening to watch.

Someone has posted that it's a result of strapping an ankle too tightly.

Doesn't allow the ankle to roll, and all the pressure goes into the leg.

If you land wrong, then you break bones. Simple, but terrible. Looks like his legs just couldn't take his weight from a higher-than-average landing.

not the worst

That's not actually a broken leg, it's a knee injury - every ligament possible has been ripped apart. It looks very bad but actually you are more likely to recover fully from the knee injury than from the Strauss injury. Both are potential career-enders though.

Just came on to say its awful bad luck, and Im sorry to see such a bad injury, especcially at a time like now when you could do with a bit of luck.

Dunno if its a good idea to compare these bad injuries, its not a competition.

would like to send my best wishes to him and hope for a speedy recovery
i will not watch the footage again as i feel it is worse then Nathan Browns,
youth is on this young fellows side that may get him through to playing again ,

take care and stay strong melbourne supporters for your team and club .

cheers and best wishes again to all you guys and your team

Wish him all the best.

Is there any news on whether it's a clean break? Or will he need a Nathan brown type operation?

Yep, he's had the rod in. Pretty much Nathan Brown's injury.

Rod, eh? Did anyone hear Garry Lyon on MMM last night after the game? He was arguing the case really strongly for a 'natural healing' option as opposed to rods, plates and the like. Said was in a massive cast and then never had an issue with it for the rest of his career.
But Doc Larkins said the rod was the modern way to go and can make recovery shorter.

Heard that too but it's not as if playing a couple of games next year is worth risking problems in the future, is it?

Still, I'll trust their judgement.

i would expect rods to be put in i don't think a break like that will be a clean break seeing how much the leg bent over i would expect rods plates or what ever to help that heal as i feel if none he may not ever get back to AFL footy

and sorry Garry is not the Doc , if a fracture yes they would probably leave it as is with plaster but it is not it will have rods etc etc

Best of luck to James Strauss with what will be a long, hard, recovery from an awful injury.
I hope the injury has no long term effects and he recovers 100% and returns to AFL footy.

If it had to happen at some stage, you'd take the start of his career, rather than in the middle/late part like Nathan Brown, Mark Coughlan, etc.

Hoping he can bounce back. Barlow has been quite good this year. Fingers crossed he can pick up where he left off and it drives him to be an even better player :thumbsu:

Dumpstar I saw him last night and this morning. Break was as clean as possible in both bones and it was quite high up the shin (Far better news than Snell's toward the ankle).
Doctors spoke that whilst it was an appalling injury and terrible it has been the best result from it. Be walking in 6 weeks.

Great news tornsword, pass on our prayers for him.

Thanks tornsword, that really is the best news possible.

It would be great if you could keep us updated on his recovery!

The guy had just been slotting into the side so well. That 50 metre bullet to Watts was brilliant.

Hope we show him some support by getting that 47 off his back and upgrade it to 6 or 17 or 23
